Due to lack of line in and below average sound, my Crown sz5100 was not getting used and was just sitting looking pretty on a shelf. I planned that if I found a Lasonic (either trc931 or 975) for a good price on ebay US, the Crown was getting flogged to help fund the transaction.  I got the 975 for what I thought was a great price (the Crown sold for about £5 less) but I had to pay double that by the time shipping and import duty (thanks ebay!) was added. Thanks to ebay again the box was delivered to my house rather than my parents (that I asked the seller to do) and Mrs Smeaton was able to open the invoice and see exactly what I'd paid in total!! (not part off the plan) After a brief argument I forfeited the proffit from the Crown and she is happy(ish).  It's pretty much in mint condition, the seller said the cassette on the right played too fast but the high speed button was on so thats ok now. However the other deck is not working and when I recieved it was rattling and clunking, I felt sick! but I  put the transformer back into place with longer screws and had a quick look for any damage but it would't power up on mains though it worked fine on a 15v DC supply. It was suprised it arrived in one piece looking great as it not packed well, it was in a thin cardboard box with one tiny layer of bubble wrap! The next day on inspection I saw it had an AC DC selector switch, it was in the DC position! oops! Everything is fine now and although this has left me absolutely brassic and facing a bbombox ban for the foreseeable, I couldn't be happier!! I Luv it so much it hurts!!

driptip - 2013-09-13 22:17

very good man, the 975 is a very big unit but is it better sounding unit than the 5100?

oh yes! much much better! Just what you need if you want to blast your tunes out loud without distortion

northerner - 2013-09-13 23:42

Nice one smeats! Shame you got rumbled though!!...not good when that happens lol

I'd say that was a good plan...the Crown doesn't do much for me really but that Lasonic is HUGE! I keep looking at US boxes but as you know the shipping and taxes are a nightmare and it keeps scaring me off. Well done for braving it out and giving it a go...that's a box to be proud of, I know there's a few US boomboxery members who love theirs

Can we have a size comparison pic with something like a Sharp so I can see how big it is.

Well done mate

lav.loo - 2013-09-14 00:53

Good move Smeats but I gotta say I loved my crown and when I get the funds again I will be looking for another always thought they sound pretty decent even using mic mix for line in. You defo made the right decision there though mate, the 975 is a beaut and as you know very rare in the UK.

Congrats on a real gem

mitchelljames - 2013-09-14 01:54

Now thats a major purchase. Well done mate

michiel - 2013-09-14 03:02

You did very well! If it sounds as good as the 931 (for sure it does!) it's a mayor step up! Liked the story around the purchase too.  Very brave to get it from the states too! For me it would be a very big step!

smeats1976 - 2013-09-14 08:28

Thanks for all your comments guys, yeah a lot could have gone wrong, it was a fair old gamble but I'm chuffed to bits with it though!! Listening to some old skool uk house (Inner City let it reign Azz) on it with the Loud Bass System on, it makes the speakers go totally bonkers jumpin in and out!

Azz, Folk slag off the sound on these all the time and you're right, they're not as bad as people say!  My Crown made a high pitch whistle when playing through the mic in and needed a FM transmitter but it's not worth the bother IMO. It was a beauty however and if I was rolling in money I would of just kept it!

MJ, this will be my last boombox purchase Major or otherwise for a bloody long while

Michiel, I say go for it dude! you've got skills! I bet if this box arrived in tiny pieces you'd still be able to fix it!

Northener, just for you matey!

Here it is compared with a GF555 (which I thought was a big box for a long time!)

Hfooo. Definition of Big is changed!

northerner - 2013-09-14 09:55

HOLY CRAP THAT'S MASSIVE!!!!!

brutus442 - 2013-09-14 17:08

That 555 looks like it'll collapse under the weight of the Jumbo!

Great buy Smeats. That Lasonic looks like she packs a wallop!

smeats1976 - 2013-09-14 17:28

haha! No chance of that Brutus! The 555 is built like a brick sh*thouse!

You're right about the Lasonic's big sound to match its looks though! But If it was built like an early 80s Sharp you'd need a forklift to pick it up

radio.raheem - 2013-09-14 17:35

Nice going smeats members say these sound great and i believe it....never had a lasonic myself or a jumbo apart from that big elta master blaster...well done mate....haha now throw that 555 out built like a tank but sound like a wasp with a vibrator built onto it lol

smeats1976 - 2013-09-15 04:33

Hi Reno! Throw my 555 out no way!haha! I don't really use it much by I like its odd looks and that it weighs a ton! You still see the occasional nutter put them on ebay with a BIN price of £250 plus!!

I'm surprised you've never owned a Lasonic, I really though you'd owned them all (sometimes several times over) if they were worth having, over the years

deech - 2013-09-15 04:36

That was a great move !!

The 975 is one of the greatest imo.

The only box i ain't had that id like is the bombeat 40....since members say they don't sound that hot, i just can't justify paying what they go for.....sure im sure they sound better than boxes like the m70 but most boxes do....not really into big flashy black boxes even though some sound good....i guess the biggest of them all is the master blaster, i had a drama with mine which i guess put me off black boxes for life

smeats1976 - 2013-09-15 13:32

Just looked for pics of the Master Blaster, very nice, is it a Helix wheely AKA? Looks HHUUUUGE! anyway its a pity that went wrong for you

"im sure they sound better than boxes like the m70 but most boxes do"

I'm sure that'll raise a few hackles up! you do like to be controversial Reno!!

There are a couple of members in the past that think the m90 sounded poo...that says it all about the m70 lol.....i don't like to be controversial or maybe i do,,,,the m70 is far to overrated,,,,,but what pisses me off the most is the silly money people sell them for....sure if you like the m70 that's fine but the stupid money preople sellll them for makes me mad i ,mean $1000 id rather shoot myself in the head,,,i couldn't live with my guilt of asking or getting that much for an m70...christ...my last fully workyng m90 was only sold for £500....i guess im ether stupid or a fool.....i just can't stand the greed involved with this hobby...end of rant lol

smeats1976 - 2013-09-15 14:14

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from! I'd be happy if an average box was only worth a few quid and Grails were within everybodys reach, that way only collecters would bother about them! There's a lot of silly prices and greedy B's on Epay!

radio.raheem - 2013-09-15 14:21

and members its not just ebay

northerner - 2013-09-15 14:25

Well all my boxes (except one!) have been cheap...even my M70...at the price I paid I challenge anyone not to love it, even Reno!

radio.raheem - 2013-09-15 14:40

How much was your 920 on seond thoughts yd better not answer lol,,,mine was £120 shipped new belts the lot....mind you that was a couple of years back

i think if us as members started asking fair prices this may help....i mean you get some nutters on here asking £300 for a bloody broken walkman,,,,i just hate to be human at times

northerner - 2013-09-15 14:50

Yeh the 920 was pricy but no regrets, it was a zero risk deal! Trusted seller, no shipping, all working...but yeh it was more than yours lol

stereo.mad - 2013-09-16 00:44

It is a real shame this hobby is so expensive to maintain as I for one are guilty of paying high prices for a lot of my boxes but iv had no choice!!
I have has some reasonable deals from some members and Reno being the most reasonable

radio.raheem - 2013-09-16 00:49

I wish you would return the favour my friend....all i want is a flipping working m90 for a fair price....you know im not about to sell it to the next guy that comes along or make a profit out of you.... i just miss my m90 soo much.....ya can giz a bell if you like lee,,,we aint had a chat in ages

stereo.mad - 2013-09-16 01:02

Reno I would only sell you a m90 for what iv paid for it myself buddy not a penny more.... The thing is iv paid big money for all of them and can't resell for a couple of hundred cheaper than I paid as that would be madness!
If I ever won the lottery you would be the first In line for a few grails my friend

stereo.mad - 2013-09-16 01:05

Ps
Ill give ya a bell later

radio.raheem - 2013-09-16 01:08

but correct me if im wrong lee i sold you the best m90 in the world for £500 if you would like a brake down of how  much all your boxes cost you i can tell you....as i did sell them individually to you fair pries for all of them

you have helped other members out...why not me

tim

no offence mate but your not getting what im saying bro....

if i decided to sell my collection i would sell back anything you sold me for the same price!

why would i buy something for £700 and then sell it on at £500 just out of good will?

i don,t go to work out of love for my boss bro!

as for me doing favours for others.....well iv sold boxes cheap in the past to members cos i got them cheap myself

northerner - 2013-09-16 05:12

I'll vouch for that Lee...you sold me my M70 for exactly what you paid for it. You could easily have made a profit on me as it was a cheap price but you didn't and I really appreciate it mate

I completely get what you're saying...only a madman or someone with cash to burn would sell something for less than they paid...that's expecting too much. Not making a profit for a mate is one thing, making a big l

northerner - 2013-09-16 05:13

...loss is another (bloody iPhone!)

stereo.mad - 2013-09-16 05:21

thanks si.....that,s exactly how it works with me buddy

mr.vu - 2013-09-16 05:27

i like box CROWN

lav.loo - 2013-09-16 07:34

As mad as uv'e always been Reno

soundboy - 2013-09-16 07:42

thanks, that is a great looking boom box

I  haven't bought though epay yet due to the fact of the unknown's... like shipping, border tax and packaging. my fear is like what seemed to be when your delivery arrived ... not working more hiding charges and poor packing. im glad it all worked out and you have that boombox witch is a keeper !

smeats1976 - 2013-09-16 12:54

Thanks Soundboy! only 2 of my boxes have been Local, slim pickings round here!

You seem to be doing ok wthout ebay though!
