Fisher PH-490, my first Fisher..

michiel - 2013-10-12 04:33

Still waiting for the postman for my personal grail, but here is my find from last week Sunday. Just replaced the belt and she is working like new again. Its a very big and powerful radio, its also very strong on batteries. It looks more like hifi than a boombox. Its a very very heavy beast!

It combines a lot of cool features of other boxes. Has the weighted fly-wheeled tuner knob ala the SK-909, it has the cool VU's from the 8614, the ticking (or how its called lol) volume button of the Crown 980, the cool feather touch tape deck of the 8614. And the weight of the HK-9000.

Sound of this beast is powerful. It is clear and goes really loud, but lacking the fat deep bass that you would expect from the big 8" woofers. I like it, but wouldnt take it outside because of its extreme weight.

This example is in near mint condition and completly working like new now. There are only some small scratches on top of the right speaker, but not disturbing at all. Costs were 70 euros and a full tank of LPG, as I had to drive four hours to get it home. It comes from the other end of the country to be exact lol

Enjoy the pics!

congrats michiel they are a well made box as you said they have a lack of bass but who cares its a beauty ,  changing the drivers to more up to date ones would make a hell of a difference your collection is becoming very impressive .

stereo.mad - 2013-10-12 05:50

Very nice
It's on my want list for sure

driptip - 2013-10-12 06:53

congrats Michiel,  the 490 just like the 492 are very nice units . full of quality and well put together features on a mini home stereo system.

how do you like the lighted tuner.

smeats1976 - 2013-10-12 07:25

What an absolute beast of a box! very cool and totally worth the cross country drive! Your collection is getting large with a good variety of boxes, I'd love to see a pic of your boombox wall you mentioned on your other thread

radio.raheem - 2013-10-12 07:48

These look  nice but that's about all i can say for them....the 480 sounds a bit better

wish the sound mached the looks...congrats tho M as Del says you must have quite a collection by now

michiel - 2013-10-12 08:12

Thanks guys! Yeah the collection is growing steadily. Lots of nice stuff to play with!

More floppy woofers would be nice in this box! It has more than enough power to drive them I guess. But I rather leave the box like it is  The wide function is very effective in this box btw. Really hard to determine where the box is standing by following its sound! Luckely it's so big it wont get lost haha

The dial light is cool indeed. It dims slowly like the interior light in my car  The cassette is awesome too! It does even sound better than the best FM stations! Its a joy to play with this box

I would expect you already got one Lee!

northerner - 2013-10-12 08:33

That's a big beast!

So the dial light dims rather than switches straight off?...I'm a real sucker for stuff like that...love the extra attention to detail

Yeh and how about letting us see your wall?!

michiel - 2013-10-12 08:45

Ow Si, if you love fancy features like dimming lights this is the perfect box! It's full with this kind of small details. Think that's the reason it's so extremely heavy. It puts together all the cool things you find in the better boxes.

Sadly it's near to impossible to make normal photos from my wall. There isn't enough space to get a normal shot at it. Got an old house with many, but small rooms. I've tried it many times already

stereo.mad - 2013-10-12 09:19

Michiel
Believe it or not but there are a few I still need to get dude

nickfish - 2013-10-12 09:25

Have you forgotten that we are supposed to be doing a deal on mine, Lee?

northerner - 2013-10-12 10:00

Come on Michiel make an effort...can't you knock a few walls down so you can take a picture?...or haul your 70 boxes outside for a nice outdoor pic?...it's the least you can do as we want to see whatya got!

Bring on the wall!!!!

smeats1976 - 2013-10-12 10:10

I'd like to see that too, but taking 70 boxes outside then back in sounds too much like hard work!

michiel - 2013-10-12 10:39

Dudes that's a very bad idea! Thinking only of the fact to bring them all outside makes me really tired! There is also a steep stairs involved! But a lot of boxes are already here on the forum

70 sounds like a lot, but I thought I got 30 max, until I counted them a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't look like near 70 at all! But, I've been asked several times now to show them in a local museum over here.... But need much more grails (at least a 777) for such an event. That would make some nice pics I guess.

northerner - 2013-10-12 11:01

70 sounds like a lot coz it is a lot lol I only got up to 20 something but I've just counted now and I'm back down to 18. I'd love to see your collection on museum display, that would be very cool

deliverance - 2013-10-12 11:15
