The impressive SANYO WCD-950

walkman.archive - 2013-10-18 15:01

Hello there,

I want to share with you my latest acquisition: which is one of the biggest 'egg' boombox ever made, and indeed one of the most impressive.

It's full of buttons and features and its design is a really eye-catcher!

On a closer look, we can see the big display, which shows all information about the CD and tape, but not the radio, as it's analog.

You can also see the volume buttons. I'd prefer a simple circular knob...

The radio is analog (I think it would be a nice point if it were PLL). It is capable receiving TV signal (analog).

Here you also can see the 3-band EQ as well as the tape selector (not automatic), the Dolby and surround (with optional speakers).

Below there is the big twin CD, which accepts two CDs and can play secuentially.

The deck is double with autoreverse and Dolby B.

What makes this boombox so special is the rare 'bass horn' that goes from one side to the other through the back. It's called ZooSCENE:

It has three levels for the bass amplification, that can be adjusted with a huge dial:

The horn is 3000cc of volume, so it has a good enough resonante. However, other top-level boomboxes like the AIWA SR6 have 10.000 for their speaker box.

Finally, there's a remote with the main functions, except the radio, which is manual:

Does anyone have another like this? As this one is powered with 100V, I could not test it yet...

Hope you enjoy!

I Bought one of these on ebay last year and when it came it was broken, but my god the thing was impressive.  The bass or ZOO part did nothing sounded like they had blown the sub.  Too bad I really wanted that unit.  Nice find Good luck.

ken80s - 2013-10-19 09:14

Hi Hugo,

Nice find, indeed a beautiful boombox with great photography skills of yours. I think this unit is from the late 80s.

walkman.archive - 2013-10-20 03:28

Thanks guys. Yes, it's impressive. A bit plasticky, but still awesome. It's like a sound tank, full of buttons.

I hope I can power it on soon and test it. Forget to say that I got it within it's original box! ;-)

brutus442 - 2013-10-20 11:14

This box looks like the transition from 80's square box style down to the 90's egg look. It certainly is unique Hugo! Congrats and excellent photography...as usual

walkman.archive - 2013-10-22 04:46

Thanks Brutus! Yes, looks as a transition, with some switches with old-style while newer, rounded design...

isolator42 - 2013-10-22 06:02

Reno always liked this one, I think...

There were some really tasty machines around this era, such as the Cobra-top Panasonics & the better JVC Hyper-bass models.

Have just tested the MCD950 forming part of Litfans collection but could only take it to half volume as our building is not insured for seismic disturbances.  Weighing in at 10kg this boombox or should I say kaboom or sonic boom has the biggest sound of all of his units.  Wished I had the remote control and also the CD drawer does not open.

Any reader wishing to phone are asked to give it a few days until such time I stop shaking and my ears stop ringing.

mystic.traveller - 2015-12-10 13:18

Great Japanese domestic machine - congrats!

I have her distant relative - SANYO PH-WCD3.

boodokhan - 2015-12-10 13:24

Congratulation Hugo

It looks very beautiful and indeed a rare item

boeingman777 - 2015-12-10 20:13

Now that's one I've never seen before.  Of course there's quite a few I've never seen before.   Looks like it would really do the trick and you have plenty of options audio wise.  Great find and glad you were able to snag it!

Salutation

I know this thread, "The Impressive SANYO WCD-950," was started over two years ago, but, aside from the fact that S2G members are posting follow-up messages to it in recent days, I have to follow folks like Ken80s and Brutus442 in applauding the camera-clicking competence of Hugo, keeper of the Walkman Archive . (And there I was, thinking that you'd copy/pasted high-resolution images from some other website or that you had scanned very good photographs from some 1980s or early '90s catalog .)

Discussion

That certainly is an interesting machine that Walkman Archive catalogued back in October 2013 (though I think the actual model number is PH-WCD950 or PH-WCD-950, indicated by the emblazoned, amber-coloured inscription in photo' 5 ). Now, this boombox (or "egg," to some collectors) doesn't tune shortwave, which dilutes or cools my would-be fondness for the item . But, as Mystic Traveller quite recently observed, it's apparently a Japanese-market model by Sanyo. And, as I stated in a message posted earlier today, boomboxes made for sale only in Japan tend not to be shortwave-tuners (but tend to have FM bands that start tuning from 76 megahertz, 12 MHz earlier than do models made for the U.S. and for several other countries). It tunes the audio of TV channels at least through channel 62, so I wonder: which will be the clearest channels (or, more honestly, the most interesting ones ) that one would be able to tune into with the PH-WCD950 in the eastern United States of America (a bit more specifically, in the southeastern U.S.)? Probably not the likes of TNT or the HBO or Showtime channels. They're premium and non-premium cable-TV channels. Unless I err, something tells me their audio content isn't accessible to the decoding, up- or down-converting UHF and VHF tuners built into this Sanyo .

Conclusion

But a pristine find it surely is, Hugo . Good going. Have a good day, ladies and gentlemen.

(And, uh, I think the word our man Hugo wants is "sequentially": between photo' 3 and photo' 4 )

Yep, right -Sanyo PH-WCD950

And a small remark about tuner in this model:

Had it been digital it may well have been up to 90MHz only.

I didn't even pay attention to the date obviously.... LOL!  Too funny.  But hey, my comment is still valid... if only a few years late....

bookman - 2015-12-12 00:17

Thanks. Some time later I got it totally fixed and voltage changed to 220V, so now it's totally functional. I can confirm it sounds really powerful, and the bass horn its quite effective. A pretty good sounding beast, indeed...
