Scored a Sanyo M9880K on the bay.

killdamon - 2008-04-15 19:39

I scored this Sanyo M9880K for 44.00, its nice and clean but i can not seem to find any info anywhere on it. Is it a decent box ? Would anyone have a link to a service manual ?

Congrats killdamon, nice looking box. I've never seen one in person so I can't comment on the quality. Please give us a review after you get it, we love reviews. Nod Yes

Also, i received my Panasonic rx5150 today and its very nice unit, looks brand new and sounds great ! but, the shipper taped Styrofoam to it with packing tape all over it now there is sticky tape residue all over it. What would be the best thing to use to remove it without damaging the case ?

oldskool69 - 2008-04-15 19:49

Take hot water and a washcloth, rub gently without too much pressure. The hot water will soften the residue and the washcloth will clump the material and hold it in the fibers as you rub it. Simple method and no danger to the finish. Smile

Very nice scores. You will enjoy them for sure!

Wow, heres what the seller told me to use to remove the residue : " hi, use some lighter fluid..we do it all the time to take tape residue of when we remove the price tags,etc.." Confused

That's a nice looking one-piece machine, killdamon. I wouldn't mind owning one of those. It's nice to see the woofers fit the large grilles too.

Its a Prosonnic PQR9960, 8" woofers. I have had for about a month now, i took it apart and cleaned all the switches and what not with some deoxit. I don't really care for the power VU meters though - kinda boring - the one on the right doesn't work very well. Everything works good on it and it pulls in radio stations from a good 80 miles away nice and strong.
I may sell it soon cause there some other units that i really want instead like the Sanyo MX650.

Be careful with lighter fluid. It will take the adhesive off readily, but it may also affect some painted plastic finishes, so test first and proceed with caution.

A safer alternative is to apply Kraft Mayonnaise (yep, the stuff from your Kitchen!) and let it sit for a couple minutes. It will soften and "dissolve" the adhesive. Then use a wet/damp cloth with a bit of dishwashing detergent to take off the Mayo+adhesive. You may need to repeat the process on really stubborn gunk, but it does work.

Do get it off as soon as possible. I brought home something someone had used plastic tape on, and I took a few pieces off as soon as I got it home. I figured "No problem... I'll finish the job tomorrow" and went to sleep. By the next morning, the adhesive had somehow "melted" itself into the finish in a kind of solvent chemical reaction, and the damage was permanent. It ruined large areas of an otherwise pristine unit. I learned from that experience to always use minimal tape directly against plastic, and remove it asap, rather than wait.

Good luck with it!

The hot water trick unfortunately did not nothing but smear it around . I tried an old bottle of rubbing alcohol on it and that worked really good. Smile I also found an original service manual for the sanyo Smile

You need to get you some Goo Gone adhesive remover. You can get it just about anywhere - Wal-Mart, Target, KMart, etc. Can I get first dibs on your Prosonic? Big Grin

Sorry to hear about that. Frown I figured it was a small spots of residue. Like a spot here and there...but all around it. Yes the alcohol does do the trick for large areas. Goo Gone as well. Nod Yes

Yes, that one on your Avatar is very nice killdamon, but I actually meant the Sanyo you've just bought! Big Grin It's one of those one-piece units designed to look like a three-piece (with short handle and tuner window amongst other obvious features, lines separating the speakers from the centre of the unit for example). Quite a few of the cheaper Sanyo models have speakers much smaller than the grilles, but yours looks to have ones that fit. Smile

killdamon - 2008-04-25 20:15

The unit doesn't really sound all that great. Frown
It has 6" speakers. Sounds good with headphones though. So i may swap out the speakers and perhaps put some insulation inside the unit around the speakers, maybe that will help.
It seems to be a good unit, everything works good , except the led vu meter is pegged out to the max when in radio mode, in tape mode it works as it should. I have the unit apart giving it a good cleaning right now.

killdamon - 2008-04-26 16:55

Ok, i cleaned 'er up and changed out the speakers with some 100watt roadmaster 3 way speakers, and wow what a difference ! The radio sounds Awesome !
I didn't have any 6" ers laying around so i used the 5 1/4" roadmasters temporarily until i get some 6" ones. This little box has some good power to it. I could not figure out why the led meter is pegged out to the max while in radio mode and not tape mode.
