New Retirement Plan for eBay TDK seller...

nak.d - 2010-09-20 17:51

OK, we have all seen crazy prices for various things...but this is a good one.

TDK MAR 90 on eBay

I particularly enjoyed the bit that says "maybe a very minor slight tear or blemishes on the wrapper from age, hence low price". How generous!

walkgirl - 2010-09-20 21:36

What a panthead Big Grin

toocool4 - 2010-09-21 01:05

He is very generous, as he has even thrown in free UK postage ha ha. Laugh Out Loud

I remember these tapes new, they were only about £6 each inflation aye!

It's been that price for several months. I emailed him asking if he added too many zero's, but he never replied.

toocool4 - 2010-09-25 02:01

Well good luck to him getting it.

Check this one out http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Maxell-M...D5112529434607305894

I remember them new £13, i have one don't like them. To me the TDK MA-XG much better and those where only £9.99 new.

It'd be an easier life if he lowered his price enough for someone to actually buy it.

Hey guys come on! I mean insured carriage for UK addresses included? Bargain city.

The poor deluded fool.

superduper - 2010-11-26 23:45

Well, all I know is that he has sold one of his MA-R60's recently at his asking price so it's apparently not that far fetched. Also, a quick check of the sold listings show many high priced examples of this tape although his is priced a bit high. But not so high to suggest he has too many zeros in his price.

I would never buy one today, certainly not at anywhere near that price but I have 2 remaining (out of a case of 10) from back in the late '70's and they are fantastic tapes, amongst the best I've seen.

reli - 2010-11-27 11:19

It is the Pioneer I posted that has too many zeros.

toocool4 - 2011-01-04 08:02

can't believe it he sold them laugh about

I can't belive IT said victor meldrew.....just nuts imho maybe in 50 yrs but then aparently im wrong...

nak.d - 2012-11-22 14:53

Here's a good one...£39.99 for one tape is a bit steep even if it is one of the very best...

MA-XG Madness

nickfish - 2012-11-22 15:25

A few weeks ago I spotted a poorly listed Sony WMD6c that came complete with headphones, microphone, case and AC adaptor but the real bonus was a new in wrapper MA-XG90 in the box and all for £60 !

Chuffed.

retrodos - 2012-11-22 17:03

Won a broken Nakamichi bx-300 with 5 unopen  MA-XG90  and 5 TDK SA-90 for $90 dollars. Never pay high prices for blank tape.

The best deal was a Tangberg 10XD reel to reel good version in mint condition with manuels and no wear, just lubrication was sticky and counter belt needed to be replaced, but receive 6 unopen Maxell XLI and UD 35-180B  and 35-180  for under $500 and he packed it well in two big boxes. Wasn't expecting the tapes, as wasn't in the listing.

nak.d - 2013-10-26 14:26

OK. I'm fairly sure I've never seen any TDK blank tape with a starting bid of £99.00. Wonderful description too...

MA-XG Madness # 2

seb968 - 2013-10-27 06:28

I was just saving these for a rainy day, but it looks like they may be worth somthing!!

TDK Metal

toocool4 - 2013-10-27 07:29

Seb968 don’t sell them if you have a good quality deck from which to record from.

My pile of TDK MA-XG 90’s is going down, I only have 5 boxes left 25 tapes unopened.

Don't worry, I won't sell them, I have a CR-7 that needs feeding and my stockpile of decent Metal tapes is less than yours . It is becoming a dificult hobby to sustain.

toocool4 - 2013-10-27 07:55

Cool, I have CR-7 as well.

I made a recording the other day on a Sony Super Metal Master and the same recording on a TDK MA-XG, the first thing I noticed was the Sony was a lot quieter. The Sony painted a blacker background, I have not had a proper chance to really sit down and compare the 2 yet.

I don't have any Sony Metal tapes; sound like they could be worth checking out!

On quick listen like I said it’s quieter than MA-XG and paints a blacker background. It is a lot smoother than the MA-XG, but the MA-XG appears more airy.

So far which one do I think is better? Well they are both different and present music in their own way. I cannot pick one and say this is better than that, as they both have good and bad points.

On my short listen so far I cannot pick one as an outright winner, will need to listen more.

Please let me know how you like them after a long listen, I would be very interested in your views.

I will try. Have you seen the  price of Sony Super Metal Master on eBay? Its not worth it.

Between TDK MA-XG, Sony Super Metal Master and Maxell Vertex I can say I don’t like the Maxell Vertex presentation of music.

Ahh I see, so it  not just TDK's that have the looney price tags. Still I suppose that follows; Sony are as iconic as TDK in the cassette world. What we need to find is a type of Metal tape that has the performance but not the hype, if that is possible. As for Maxell it comes as no surprise to me that you don't like the Vertex. I always rated Maxel l one and type ll cassettes, XL-II s in particular; but their metal formulations left me cold. I used Black series MX for a while; they were perfectly competant but lacked  the inpact of the TDK metals.

toocool4 - 2013-10-27 13:42

I think what we need is for TDK, Sony etc to start making Metal tapes again. Even if the MA-XG90 came in at £15 and the Sony Super Metal Master came in at £15 - £20 they would sell, I for one would buy them.

seb968 - 2013-10-27 13:45

Yep, I'd buy them too. Shouldn't think it will ever happen though

nak.d - 2015-02-13 20:09

The market is still buoyant. Seems the older flavours of TDK bring the biggest bucks...

Starting price £44.50 09-Feb-15 20:48:48 GMT - interesting

Wonder what TDK SA-X start at and or how high they have ever been?

reli - 2015-02-14 01:58

Seems like a normal price, actually.

Bids totalling £102.99 with 2 days to go for 3 sealed MA-XG 90 audio tapes may be unremarkable in early 2015, but this has to represent the definition of a speculative bubble.

reli - 2015-02-14 07:18

Not really.  Some TDK metals, especially the MA-R, fetch $70-90 each if it's still wrapped, and $30-40 if unwrapped.  It's been that way for years, even during the recession.  And that particular auction included 3 tapes PLUS the original box too.

I admire your optimism. I guess I was saying that I can't see this lasting for ever... however, I'm happy to be proved wrong . I wonder if the market will stand any more increases? I know these aren't made any more and are finite in supply, but how much is too much?
