Rare Sony TPS-L2?

sonytpsfan - 2009-09-28 12:15

Hi, I have a TPS (old version without "Walkman" label) that does not have the engraved (or concave) labels for Play/Fwd/Rwd etc. It simply notes it in text. (Not sure if this is clear)

Anyways, I know the "guys/dolls" version is rare, but does anyone know how rare this version is?

I'll try to post a pic if I could figure this system out (I'm very new to the board).

Thanks.

Hi Renzgi,

I saw your collection; very impressive.

I found a photo of my TPS version here:

http://www.geocities.jp/wm_fun/tps-l2.htm

It is the bottom one in the 7th picture. Non-etched "listen, rew, ff, etc" on the case.

This Japanese collector seems to have every version. I tried an online translator, but much of it didn't make sense.

I have a Sony Soundabout box that the tps-l2 came in. is that rare? It looks nothing like the one posted above with the photo of the people on it

The box in the link pictured above is a TPS-L2 Walkman and the box you have is obviously for the Soundabout Walkman which as you may know preceeded the TPS-L2 Walkman. I think the Soundabout is more rare. As I mentioned in another topic, the serial number on the box should match the serial number on the Walkman or it's a mismatched combo. Feel free to post photos of your TPS-L2 and Soundabout box. As a side note, there is an unofficial competition for the lowest serial number on this first Sony stereo cassette player; the Soundabout (also called the Stowaway or Freestyle). I think our forum member, Renzgi leads with his pristine "guys and dolls" TPS-L2. Hey Renzgi, what's that number again?

Has anyone ever seen the original box for the "Freestyle" version (sold in Australia or Sweden I think).

I have an original "Soundabout" in the Blue/Grey box and have seen the "Stowaway" version on eBay. Both essentially look the same. May be the Freestyle looks the same as well, but I've never seen it.

Of course there is the color box with rollerskaters when Sony finally badged it with "Walkman".

Ha, Awesome!

Thanks for posting this.

It looks like the first picture is from the Sony museum/building in Tokyo, right?
