The Marantz PMD430 / CP430 is a very capable recorder. I don't really use my as a listen device. Mainly use it to put music onto tape. Actually using my CP430 to put down some new tunes on TDK SA90s right now and the reproduction quality is very accurate. Able to put down quite high levels without any noticeable distortion.

Love the 3 head design like you get on some stackable decks, but with the portability as well, so able to fine tune bias and also get a comparison of source and tape. Shame there was never a Dolby C version of this.

is the 430 better playing than the sony's??

I've got a TC-D5M and WM-D6C, the TC-D5M is a slightly better machine in my opinion but no Dolby C. Not sure about the rest though.

A couple of TC-D5 Pros have passed through my hands over the years, although I can't comment on sound comparisons I can report that these units are built to ridiculously high quality, these were £800 items in their day.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum but it would keep my opinion to say, not only as a collector and user but also by repair technician, since I've repaired many, and some have even improved performance. Best of all are the WM-D6C and wm-dd9. I use a WM-D6C (which I suitably modified) to record the tapes. Then play with a wm-dd9 (always modified by me). First, the wm-dd9 sounds better of WM-D6C who recorded the tape. Then I reached the quality that is slightly higher than the compact disc from which the register. Are two devices that give me much satisfaction. I made comparisons with Nakamichi dragon type recorders. Some audiophiles do not believe their ears.
