I got to thinking about this thing and now it's driving me nuts.
It was the early 80s and it was the only "walkman" I ever wanted. When I finally found it I was very happy. It's long gone now, of course, but the memory lives on...
I've tried to track it down but no luck so far. Let me describe it:
Usual walkman size
Brick red metal chassis with black and silver trim
Cassette, AM/FM, mic?
Auto-reverse
Telescoping antenna
Left and right volume control
Built-in 1" speakers on the back behind round black grills trimmed with silver
The built-in speakers are what really made me want the thing. It was like a tiny, complete stereo. So cool.
I think it was Aiwa but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
This is proving quite a challenge. I know of two units by Saisho & Universum with twin speakers on the rear but these are plastic.
I genuinely can't think of a metal unit with this feature. Could it only have had a metal front perhaps?
I have a hunch, did it have standard transport controls up the side or did it have a 'switch' style control for FF & RM?
Thanks for your consideration. I can budge on the metal case but it was hefty for its size.
I believe it had black, plastic push-button controls. The door open mechanism was a slider, if I recall.
The Aiwa HS-J300 is close. Same whip antenna. '82/83/84 is the right time frame. Mine had the FM LED! Dual headphone jacks maybe.
