What's this old box....A walkman? Toshiba?? Let's take a look....
AM/FM Stereo Tuner Pack, Auto Reverse, Dolby System, Direct access Soft-Touch Operation? Sounds interesting...

A foam packing box...Tear this thing open! There is something inside, but it's covered by an owner's manual and stuff.

Looks like accessories hiding under the manual there (oh, the suspense) Big Grin

I have a KT-AS1 (looks mostly the same as yours) complete with box and accessories. When I rebelted it I found out one of the tiny tight-fitting caps that holds the spindles in place is cracked lengthwise mostly in half. I never got around to putting it back together because of this and the pasrts got scattered once and that cap lost... The spindle won't stay on without thar cap and makes it unusable (just the tuner pack is actually) and it's too small to glue reliably.

Well now we wait with baited breath to have a peak below the inside box cover........
From my research the KT-AS1 was released 83-84 at a price of $95 and the KT-AS2 released in 85 for $80 probably same as KT-AS1 but with lower price point due to the intense price war competition back in those heady days. Excellent find Wombat must admit a pang of jealousy. Always nearly any model new in box with box in good condition is worth celebrating for us collectors.

A word of CAUTION from collector with first hand experience of Toshiba's disasterous hub system that has FF and Rewind buttons on face pushing down on pinned mechanism to engage these functions. DO NOT EVER use the FF or Rewind function as they are very prone to when you open lid springs and parts reach escape velocity never to be found again for repair. There is a very tight fitting plastic cap on end that usually ends up split lengthwise and is too small to glue with and luck of holding.
Just a heads up. Enjoy this nice looking player.

Thanks for the advice. Your getting ahead of me now!! LOL. Yes, Going to have to open this one up if I want the tape to work. The world is 10% creativity and 90% maitenance--%@$&!. This wm was only used for a couple weeks then put away untill now. My two best finds have been from the Army/Navy veterans. Thanks guys--you had good taste.

it's been a while but on the kts1 there are 5 wires which must be unsoldierd to lift the PCB and then you will find the belt.

Ugh; it sounds like this was a common problem with these. I fiddled wiht mine a bit, and wonder if you'd be OK using them sparingly if you press gently on the appropriate one before pressing stop, to keep it from popping up with force. But there's also more pressure on them when in the rew/FF position. That might have been a factor.

I posted a picture of it in the other thread. Does the KT-AS2 have these same caps, or was the problem recognized and the design improved?

johnedward - 2009-05-18 05:27

From the models I have with this awful front face FF,Rew buttons they all have problem.

mrp32dave - 2009-05-18 07:35

I don't think this model has any problems KT-V670
The buttons work directly on the hubs but the construction is very different.
I use this one often and have had no problems
I'll take a close up of the reels

The tuner pack. I'm not touching the original head phones. The foam is dry.

it's a matter of opinion but i would take everything out of the styro. carefully and clean up the mess from the decayed headphones as good as possible.
