Aiwa HS-J10 & HS-RL30 Any info? Photos Added!

scottmac - 2007-09-29 21:34

Recently acquired an Aiwa CassetteBoy, model HS-J10. Features 4 band equalizer, auto reverse, digital TV multiplex TV stereo) & radio tuner (76 to 108MHz w/3 presets), stereo recording w/the Stereo One Point Mic and more. Fantastic sounding unit and in near new condition. Problem is I can't find any info on this model or if there was an equivalent model that sold outside of Japan?
Also, in the same lot I acquired a white Aiwa HS-RL30, all metal, strictly a player w/a TV & radio tuner, DSL is featured on the front. Has Dolby B NR, auto reverse and takes a gum battery and/or AAs, but has another feature I can't find anything about....."Remote, Active Operation System?" Beautiful unit and it looks and sounds new.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has a clue, has knowledge about either Aiwa.

UPDATE: Added photos and made two (2) discoveries, the HS-RL30 does not take a gum battery, the opening appears to be for remote storage (just looks like the same size as my MD units)? Also, to my pleasure, the HS-J10 records directly from the TV/Radio tuner & w/fantastic quality.

This last one is the J10 again.

Do hope that someone can help w/additional info. Don't know if I'll keep, sell or trade? More into MDs.

Do you still have these and are you interested in selling them?

There's a possibility that I will sell or possibly trade? I'm an eBay seller so unless the cash offer or trade was really good, if I do sell, it will be on eBay. But I do sort of like these 2 Aiwas and they will be difficult to part with. Solid builds & excellent recording.
Have a large collection of MD units & discs, but really need & want a MD multitrack recorder so any sales or trades are aimed at those acquisitions. Also interested in the Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD unit.
If I decide to move, I'll be sure to post in the "For Sale" or "Trade" areas of this site.
But honestly, I'd like to know a little bit more about them before I decide upon keeping or selling.

I might have something interesting to trade, not a MD but other things...

Always interested in offers, but a multitracker, MD or possibly digital is my main goal.
My day was just made w/a deal I concluded that netted me a Sony MZ-N910 MD unit from someone who purchased it new in Japan just over a year ago. May quickly become my favorite, although the Sharp 722 (an MD tank) is still the unit I'm probably gonna keep till the end.

The Aiwa HS-J10 is the Japanese version (maybe also Asian) of HS-J101 (European model) and HS-J700 (American model). All three are almost identical, with the exception that HS-J10 has the TV feature. Aiwa kept the best for Japan!

These different model numbers for the same walkman was typical in the 80's, and Aiwa used it for many different models.

The HS-J10/HS-J101/HS-J700 goes back to 1987. It was a very nice unit, very robust, with
excellent sound quality and a very unusual tuner section, which, although not digital, is
very accurate and has a unique 3 preset system. The issue of the digital tuner was addressed in the successor model
HS-J20/HS-J202/HS-J800, which went through many revisions; the last I have seen is MkV, and that unit besides the digital tuner has an excellent head in the tape section with an amazing sound quality.

Although for most people, walkman is synonymous to Sony, Aiwa made cassette players with excellent sound quality. This is not by accindent, but it has its roots in Aiwa's experience with tape cassette decks. In this area, Aiwa was among the best in the world, rivaling companies such as Nakamichi (but not Sony, which, although it made very good decks, was not at the same level).

Finally made my decision to sell to the highest bidder on eBay.

Thanks for the responses/info.

I'll post the eBay sale links in the appropriate folder.
