What is the best sounding walkman

radio.raheem - 2011-04-13 23:11

What is the loudest best sounding walkman out there...is it the sony wm d6c for example...I dearly want another one of these but i find they go for silly money these days..also im kinda put off by the fact the d6c has no bass control... i have heard walkmans like the aiwa 101 dd9 etc..(still looking for a dd9) i have 2 broken ones but again they seem to go for silly money...reason i ask im using a wm 550c and it sounds pretty damn good on my grado rs1 headphones...i would rather be using my aiwa 101 but the belt is shot...and i cant afford to send her off for repair right now....any way i highly recommend getting a pair of grado rs1 for walkman use (i nearly sold mine) anyway what's your thoughts guys/gals...this topic has been discussed so many times up there but not down here...

I had this thing back in the early '80s that I think would win hands down, but it wasn't exactly a "walkman". It was more like a boombox without speakers that was built specifically for headphones. It took 6 D batteries I think, had a handle on the top so you could carry it around, and a 1/4" headphone jack. It was big, and cumbersome, but man would it rock a set of headphones. It would blow your eardrums out if you weren't careful.

Good luck straping that sucker to your belt, though.

radio.raheem - 2011-04-14 03:00

What is this thing????????? lol that's what i want....I just don't find walkman loud enough...mind you compaired to an ipod...the walkman is in a different world..funny you should mention this ....thing... I have a kind of walkman and yes it takes 6 c cells and has a speaker...It's the first walkman type thing i ever had...but it's only cheap no tone control nothing...i would love to hear it again but it needs a new belt like everything else..

walkgirl - 2011-04-14 03:12

The loudest one is the grundog beatboy 120 or the fairmate pd101

both 2 x 60 mw

I'll give you a grand for them both lass...Im just  wonderin if the sony d6c is much louder than the dd9...as i think the wm 6c is rated quite high here....I mean in genaral there isn't a huge differance between most walkmans...but I do remember the d6c being quite loud dispite my headphones being hard to drive...

walkgirl - 2011-04-14 06:26

dd9 is not loud at all!

the dc6 I do not know, do not like it either

radio.raheem - 2011-04-14 10:09

Carful lass there are are a lot of dd9 fans out there but yes the dd9 isn't that loud but it sounds pretty good...i did get to use one of mine for a week before it broke...hey what do you think of the coss porta pro nicolle??I was going to buy some today but as im sure you have read I have more bloody paypal issues...im tellin ya paypal are usless..

walkgirl - 2011-04-15 04:48

Portrapro is fantastic!!

when you get a chance get one!!

I have one also

radio.raheem - 2011-04-15 10:22

Hi love I just bought 2 pairs of porta pro today..sombody bought them for me..not bad for £30 for the pair...I can't wait to compair them against my Grado Rs1 but i somehow doubt that is a fair fight...Ever heard of Grado rs1 nicolle???There for snobs lol

19lexicon78 - 2011-04-15 12:31

no, grado rs-1 are not for snobs. rs-1's are the real deal. the rs'1 makes you smile. rs'1 love rock and jazz.

sennheiser he60's are the better one. but still, always use the rs-1 at home, never outside.. use the ms-1's for outside or earbuds.

19lexicon78 - 2011-04-15 12:46

loudness, i think d5's are more loud than d6c's. also bass en mid-tones are better on a d5. detail is better on a d6c, but prefer d5 it sounds more "natural".

because of the better lows and mids, it has more "body"= i hope it's the right word for it.

the d5 makes me smile

hey dotor, ever optimised a d5?

the first walkman is perhaps the best walkman..!!!

my collection:

1x d3

2x dc2

3x dd9

3x d6c

2x d5=want more of these...

joeybinky - 2011-06-03 20:27

I think the best sounding and loudest Sony Walkman is the 1981 WA-33 Soundabout. Amazing! I searched for one for 28 years to replace the one I broke when I was 12, Finally replaced it plus 1 extra. I just love it. I even located a WA-33 service manual. It especially sounds better if I play my 80's Britt pop cassettes in it.

bub - 2011-06-04 00:19

The top sounding models I have will be the D6C followed by the DC2. I do not have a D5 but I wish I could find one. I wish I could find a DD9 too- but they are ridiculously expensive. The JX2000 (JX-505) sounds great but it is currently too unreliable for me to consider. For headphones I use an ESW9.

The D6C should be much louder than the DD9 based on the mw output alone. And forget modern iPods and such. Their amps are so ridiculously weak they can only properly drive the earphones they came with and iems. Which is why headphone amps seem to be popular these days.

As for bass control, I just re-capped an Aiwa (HS-WR350) with DSL and it is one of the better "bass boost" loudness systems I've across (not a fan of these things though.). It's so powerful to the point of ridiculousness.

zx280 - 2011-06-04 05:07

WA-55 does it for me. Great bass and clear as..

litfan - 2011-06-05 14:24

I still go with the wm-7. Still sounding good after 30 years.

rerooted - 2011-06-05 14:59

my wm-7 finally gave up and the belts are shot. where can i get replacements for the both of them ?  thanks much.....rerooted...

dottor.walkman - 2011-06-10 04:06

Hello 19lexicon78,
yes, I repaired and optimized in the past, several TC-D5M.

19lexicon78 - 2011-06-12 02:15

hi dottor,

what's your experience with them.

to me: the lower ranges are better than a d6c.

the highs from a d6c are better than d5

can the mid and higher ranges of a d5 be improved?

dottor.walkman - 2011-06-12 04:41

The difference of the frequency response depends also of the head.
I prefer the D6C because, compared to TC-D5M, has a signal to noise ratio more higher, lower harmonic distortion, a wow&flutter
more lower and a higher precision on velocity servo scroll because of the quartz. Moreover, it is faster in faster and forward.
The TC-D5M has very low frequencies and more attention, but this is irrelevant for the purposes of listening.
The low frequencies that we can hear are the same for both recorders.
The high frequencies of the TC-D5M extends over of the D6C, because the D6C it has always placed a MPX filter that cuts the
higher frequencies (always irrelevant for the purposes of hearing).
The D6C it sounds more transparent and analytical than the TC-D5M and, in my opinion, this fact may give the impression that it
has fewer lows of the TC-D5M.
It would be interesting to mount the amorphous head of the D6C on the TC-D5M to see improvement.
But the TC-D5M does not have the dolby C (essential feature for me) therefore, for this reason, I was never interested in
making upgrades to the TC-D5M.
However, ultimately, is a matter of personal taste.

Going by the service manuals of the Sony DD9, DC2 and D6C the output are as follows

DD9 = 5mW + 5mW into 16 ohms

DC2 = 20mW + 20mW into 32 ohms

D6C = 30mW + 30mW into 32 ohms

The DC2 and D6C have a line output of .25V

19lexicon78 - 2011-06-12 08:16

yes, de d6c is more precise also more analytical. but it feels it has less body in the lower ranges. especially when playing on an audio-set=speakers, the d5 feels more musical more natural. perhaps i prefer some color in the sound.

i never use dolby c and i connect the d5 pro2 to my emt = both xlr. another reason i'm interested in the d5

indeed, the biggest difference is the head and could be an improvement of the d5.

As I said: everyone has their own tastes. The world is beautiful because it is diverse.

hi..doc...middle of a not, hot, hot day here. thank goodness for the air conditioneer. the sun has not one cloud to filter it. i have been very low on money due to a 16 day stay in the hospital stay... luckily i have disability bue to my back and an interem policy which should pay most of the rest. my unconcontious ride to cheasapeak general hopital was 270 miles and 2000.00  dollars. my premiums for my wife and i are well over 8000.00 a year. that is after the govt. payouts. the govt. is trying to increase the amount we pay all the time. socialized medicine now covers 51 % in the u.s.a. i would say that is fairly socialized already. thank goodness you don't live in pakastan with there extreme poverety. you could google my address at 40232 dolphin ln. ,,avon n.c. 27915. i don't know if it is possible but mabye it is. it needs work i used to be able to do and i think i can if i can get the swelling down in my feet. anyway,,until i see where i am finantially i will pass ordering for now.  ....thanks again.....rerooted........

toocool4 - 2011-06-12 10:53

Hope you get better soon rerooted.

I live in England and a lot of people here moan about England, but they do not know how good we have it.

At least when we are ill we get taken care of with no questioned asked. Yes we do pay more tax than some other countries, but it could be worse like you said we could be in Pakistan etc.

tuna - 2011-06-12 11:21

I am sorry to hear that rerooted. I hope things get better for you. I spent a lot of time in the hospitals last year and the hospitals are not exactly happy places. Fortunately, the insurance pays for everything. I guess that there's a lot of socialism relics in our health-care system that provide basic health care to everyone and better one to those than can afford it. I wouldn't call it 1st class service but you really do get what you need and more. US really needs to get a hold of their own greedy pharmaceutical companies and finally provide decent care for each and everyone. One thing is to talk about personal liberties and freedom and the right to speak your mind. But that is nothing compared to the right of them all - right to live. And with the US system such as it is, by denying people basic health care, you deny them that very right. I'm afraid we all might end up that way soon.

dottor.walkman - 2011-06-12 11:34

Hello rerooted,
also I will hope that all goes well soon. Toocool4 and Tuna said better than I can say.
I can only add that when you want and if you want, I are willing to help you with your wm-7.
Hello.

brutus442 - 2011-06-12 16:45

Wishing you a speedy recovery rerooted, and cooler temperatures

rerooted - 2011-06-12 17:35

man do you have it right...if you want to walk that iv bag follows you around like a robot. i have been out about about 10 days and there is no place like home. i managed to loose 10 lbs on there hospital food.  yuk.  i was there for 2 atays and for some unknown reason i was peeing blood,,,alot. they have it stopped and i hope it stays stopped. no tumors,,,no nothing. they think my kidneys are working so hard they are forcing blood out. prendose seems to be relaxing them and working but i can't do that forever. thanks much for your concern of which i will always remember......rerooted.....

rerooted - 2011-06-12 17:41

one thing i didn't know is that right now 51 % of the hospital charges in the U.S.A. are paid for by the government. i was really surprised. i have dissability medicare and a sublimantel policy which pays most everything. still my wife and i pay about 8.000 a year for hospital insurance.   a lot of money to us.....thanks much...rerooted.....

rerooted - 2011-06-12 17:45

i personally like my wm-d3...it has the ticks but for some reason i have used it alot for 2 years and the recordings come right from it.......rerooted...

rerooted - 2011-06-12 17:49

i love my wm-d3 but it is very heavy. i sent 20.00 into downtown la,,calif....a chancy thing but there was a tape left in it with a business meeting on it......got lucky that time...thanks.....rerooted....

rerooted - 2011-06-13 05:15

thanks brutus,,and also a very prosperious year for you....rerooted.....

Why not use an external, battery-powered headphone amp? Seen 'em around, but can't remember names or numbers. You could go line-out from a DC2, or even better I suspect, headphone-out into the amp's line-in from the DD9. If I'm at home, I use a Creek OBH headphone amp fed from either a DC2 or DD9 (DD9 is the better player to my ears) into Grado SR80i 'phones. Nice, meaty sound :-) Not as good as the top-flight Grados I auditioned a while ago though :-) Mind you, they cost almost £2,000!

Cheers, Jon.

The loudest walkman are those ones that uses more volts in each battery cell. For example, 4 batteries are going to be louder than 2 batteries.

The links are here: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~an4t-tkns/taro/walkman/walkman.htm&ei=DOloT9rbF9Do8QPXnJyPCQ&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCMQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~an4t-tkns/taro/walkman/walkman.htm%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D603%26prmd%3Dimvns

It's in Japanese so the link I gave you all here is a google translate version. Under "Hen cassette Walkman", click which year you would like to view. Most should give you specs.

Hi:

How many (1.5 V) batteries does these walkmans use?

While there are models that are louder volume wise, how about a debate in sound reproduction? For Instance EX DBB on sony units seems to sound better than their megabass system. Or one can get a unit with graphic EQ which does improve the sound with a good pair of headphones. Looking forward to peoples thoughts on that

lapis - 2012-09-09 03:55

Strange that the grundig beatboy 120 and the fairmate are louder than even a Sony TC/WM-D6/C even though the 2 formers use 2 batteries. How did they did that? I'm .confused

lapis - 2012-12-11 06:06

I like walkmans with the equalizers on. For example WM-F80.
