I believe I have a Panasonic with the same mechanism (RQ-CR07V).

It has the fantastic ability to knock itself out of alignment every time auto-reverse engaged. The head is only half as wide and has 2 tracks. How does this work then? Well, the head actually SLIDES sideways across the tape to read the other side. As you can imagine, not the best design. At least it has Bi-azimuth adjustment.

For extra lols when playing on reverse you could push the head back to the other side and play the other side in reverse. Worth it for the novelty value of that auto-reverse alone. Frequently response is not great and while radio works well the buttons are incredibly stiff.  It is one of my worse units, being a cheaply made 2003 model. The belts barely lasted 3 years. At least it is really easy to work on.
