WM-W800 really worth this much?

dmata10 - 2012-12-07 14:15

If you haven't seen it it yet, here is the link:

Is the red version really worth this much or is this auction just a bunch of crap.  An AM/FM tuner card is included with the auction as well as the carrying case and the microphone.

I agree. Seems a tad high for an un-boxed version. It`s only worth what someone else will pay for it.

Well bidding with days left yet is at $670 USD although its only not to savvy bidders bidding it up so high early on.  Sad thing we all know that someone at last 5 seconds will bid who never bid before and win it... usually the way.  The others just drive up price for all.   It is yes that ultra rare of a unit not because its the W800 but because it is the JDM version which only had the FM tuner pack available and the power strip and internals to use the CTP-1A tuner pack.  Rest of world's W800 even if you have the tuner pack it wont work in unit... Is it worth that much I would say 400 to 500 is reasonable on a very good day of 2 people wanting/bidding on it.

Here is a boxed example that is the JDM fm version sold just recently for $786 and it was sadly missing the FM tuner pack.

We generated a LOT of interest in the CTP 1A tuner card with our discussions...so everyone wants one Plus red isn't a common variant. But these units used to sell for between $70 to 150 a year and as half back.

All of us want good units and there aren't many really left...so it is sad in a way that some of Maxim's pieces are selling for less on account of his location as a seller.

If he can pull off a few 'high starting price/buy now' auctions he'll be probably as happy as the buyers have been so far

But I'd rather have him use the Buy Now/Make offer system to make the sale more 'balanced' instead ... as he's 'one of us'

All the best Maxim ....

Thanks for good words DocP,

Maybe you wrong about "buy now" for every unit, I think auction format is optimal for some of units (like w800, wm-40, dd9, wm-20, etc) , but some of mine wm-40 and dd-100 was sold really cheap, I still miss them... and wm-109 almost new for 0.99$

For those who wants make offer before auction, I always post unit photos here, so just pm me, maybe your offer will be accepted...

It was only two months ago that I had won this very walkman. I paid just over 200 dollars. However, the CTP Tuner pack was bought here from member Renzgi.

STEAL DEAL the difference in buying from someone clearing their attic as against buying from a collector/someone who has an idea

Evaluation criteria
1. Do I want it /want it real bad or NOT
2. Color preference - Rarity ??
3. Working condition in a 9 out of 10 scale (vintage!)
4. Cosmetic condition ..9 out of 10 scale
5. Accessories (in this example walkman + pouch, tuner + pouch and microphone + pouch) Only things missing : user manual/box/headphones/battery/original 'papers'
6. Bonus add ons : spare belts , service manual, batteries, cassette

Ours isn't a cheap hobby ...boohoo ....but there are many instances of almost all of us striking 'gold' with garage sales/lucky finds on eBay. Once procured we wouldn't want to part with it for the same price right? Let us just hope that once we know a fellow member has something we like (like Maxim's items so far), we try and make a modest to good/'decent' offer and from what I've seen over the years..... most often than not members are good as gold when it comes to helping out
