Sony WM2-Belt Replacement

ken80s - 2013-03-09 19:14

I lost bidding on the red one from ebay last couple of weeks ago but got this one BIN EUR 39.99 instead. Seller sold as defective.

wm2

--------------------------------

Received 2 days ago, tested the unit found LED turns on but tape drive failed. Decided to perform resurrection.

---------------------------------------------

One of the battery terminal already show signs of corrosion and the serial sticker has perished and completely succumbed to the lead contamination. Thoroughly clean up to regain conductivity.

Time to check out my belt inventory.

----------------------------------------

The belt has stretched causing the motor to free spin and not able to engage the playback lever. Replace with a new one and calibrate the motor speed as well.

A fully restored Sony WM-2 to add into my walkman collection.

that was easy ..... wish, mine was the same way .... now it plays with hi speed when i push play, and when i push a FF (or rew ? ), both directions start against each other, and pushing one direction doesn`t work ... and i have a ragged grey cable, where i don`t know, where it has to be solded again .. i hate that WM-2 meanwhile ... -.- ...

Wrong belt position from your motor could cause the mechanism reverse that is when your tape drive direction is conflict to each other. Please reverse the belt to the opposite winding direction from the motor, after that it should work. Please refer to the image above for your reference on the belt positioning.

I used to take pictures of the main board first before attempt to do any repair to avoid situation like this

mmmh i did it on tapedecks, because its more complicated. do you have a pic from your entire board ? need to solder this annoying cable again ... i`ve got a service manual now...

if i can`t repair it, its for my "to carry to audio clinic" basket... which is a repair service for vintage hifi in the next city...

Where does the other end of the wire goes to? Is it to the battery terminal or the servo motor, try using macro shots to locate the soldering points that possibly with remaining small tailing where the cable break. The schematic of the manual should provide you better tracibility.

ok, i`ll check it this weekend, thx for the info .

so .. i don`t want to touch this sh*tbox again atm... have another wm-2 here, same start problems, cleaned rollers and changed belts, and still no 100% wobblefree ...

this 80s sony walkmen, i`m never lucky with them... i bought two WM-2, one WM-55, which has still a wobble on side B, and a WM DD III with cracked gear... and its always a pleasure to get electronic garbage from the bay after seller described it as fully working -.- ...

the only nice running players from the 80s were the grundigs and one siemens... all the rest i could restore to 80 % .... and nothing more...
