Old school ultra light headphones...

elektroneko - 2013-03-22 12:00

...That sound good and are still available. And also look good. Think early Sony headphones that were included with Walkmans, that kinda look.

Does anyone know where you can get such headphones?

nickfish - 2013-03-22 12:17

Hi Tobi,

Have a look at Sennheiser's website. Their lightweight PX range provides a lot of performance for the money and they have the old school look. They start from about £10 here and if you shop around the ones that should be about £30 can be had for less than £20.

If you are looking for bass  you need the HD25 and it will cost a lot more but it can extract so much more from even a humble portable.

Nick

How about these? A little chunky I know, but well thought of.

But why not try make a custom headphone? It's a lot of fun artistic work and it's your own unique style. There are many "household" parts that are workable to create  headphone frame and pad's.

elektroneko - 2013-03-22 15:33

I guess everyone wants me to buy a Koss XD

brutus442 - 2013-03-22 15:38

I'm with Nick on this one....I love my Senn's

radio.raheem - 2013-03-22 15:41

I wouldn't tobi but that's just my opinion....if you don't want to much out of you're headphones then i suppose porta pro will be fine

It's a bad reason to buy a pair of headphones, I know, but it's about the looks for me to be honest. As long as it sounds as good as my current pair: A Sony MDR-ZX100.

For those advising a Sennheiser: I got really bad experiences with them: They have really sensitive cables who break easily.

And is what Nicole says true? The Koss Portapro is a 80's set of headphones?

walkgirl - 2013-03-22 16:11

Die koss word al sinds 84 gemaakt!!, en ziet nog het zelfde uit!!

Agree with this statement especially the lower end ones. They are a b!tch to re-solder as well....however depending on the model and how you treat the cable, these Senn's fit like a glove and sound like an opera house!

For me one major factor is fit. If you plan on wearing them for extended lengths (ie 2-4 hours at a time when flying for example) having uncomfortable cans is worse than none at all.

Like a good pair of jeans..they need to be tried on, sound good  and fit perfectly

nickfish - 2013-03-22 18:05

Go and try the sennheiser hd25 sp. It will be an experience and 1000's of dj's swear by them. Those hd414's with the yellow pads were great but high impedence made them difficult to drive loud from portable gear and lacked bass but the imagery was stunning. You are used to closed back designs so the hd25 will fit like a glove. You must try them.

It looks complicated, but there are two main versions. The original HD25 SP was replaced by HD25 SP 11 and they both have a single headband. The HD25-1 SP and later HD25-1 SP 11 that followed it have the twin headband. These latter -1 models were more aimed at the DJ and pro market because they had a tighter fit, shorter cables and swivelling 'cans' that make it easier to have one on the ear and the other off.

Sound wise, they are all phenomenal with extraordinary bass. The -1 models have a small amount of extra bass which is because of improved drivers but also because of the tighter fit, which can be uncomfortable over extended periods especially if you wear glasses. The other models have still got a huge amount of bass (more than any other I have ever heard) and actually have a slightly more open sound and are definitely more comfortable.

There have been some comments made about the connecting leads and while I have never had a problem I won't dismiss it but the cables are available and very easy to replace with shorter, longer or even coiled versions. How many other brands can you say that about?

The great news is that with the HD25 there are no duff models and all of them are wonderful. Pay as little or as much as you like. I have a pair that is about 18 years old and another that's a year old. Wonderful.
