As some of you might know my 12 year old boy is only able to see 15%.He would like to listen and to produce his radio plays. He`s not so familiar with Walkmans,he needs a solid allday piece for outdoor use, which forgives frequently ffwd and rewind use.
So we are looking for a handi cassette II unit or a similar device.
These are not available in EU.
The guy below does only ship to US.
handi cassetteThe unit could be used as well...
I`m also looking for an "Arkenstone Reader" ,could be used as well.
description:
The Arkenstone Reader is an optical character recognition device, or scanner, that converts printed text into a computer text file. Based on the TrueScan Recognition System from Calera Recognition Systems, the Arkenstone can recognize typewritten, typeset, laser print, draft-quality dot matrix, and other computer printouts with monospace or proportional fonts sized from 6 to 28 points. Formats supported include: single and multiple columns, variable column widths, tables, lists, paragraphs, and intermixed text and graphics. The software is able to determine if a document is placed upside down or sideways on the reader, and to adjust the scanning process accordingly. The Quick Speech feature permits the user to listen to the page while it is being recognized, and also will provide Braille output. COMPONENTS: The Arkenstone Reader is made up of three components. They are a TrueScan recognition card, a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet IIP scanner, and a scanner interface card. The software required to run the Reader is included, along with a front-end software program called EasyScan. The complete system, including the TrueScan Model 600 card with the ScanJet IIP and the interface card, is $4074. All components may also be purchased separately. COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM PC AT computers. DIMENSIONS: 3.7 x 13.6 x 18.9 inches. WEIGHT: 16.5 pounds

There is some standard software that is much cheaper that should be MS/PC compatible. I wish I could remember the name of it. I don't think it does al of the thing you mentionedbut could offer a nice start. One of the nice things about it was that you could use a standard scanner and that it used the principle of partial words. This is based on the fact that humans typically don't read whole words. Example:
Ths is bsd on th fct tht hmns dnt rd hl wrds.

That is awsome that he can read braille very well, not awsome his vision being that way. Glad I could be of help. Does the machine you mentioned actualy print braille? I didn't know they made such equipment. Pretty neat.
I`m not so informed yet about this equipment ,but I`ll try to find out more...
Hi Jens,
Here's some info...hope it's helpful.

Nice catch JC! I'm gonna wait and bid on for Jens though. For the size of it, if I can win it (and will) for Jens and ship it to him he will still save money and I can put it at such a value that the customs taxes over there won't bite him.
International shipping rates are harsh. Even on small items. I can send it cheaper myself than what he would have to pay some company to ship it to him for. Which reminds me, Jens, PM me your address so I can send this once I win it. I'm pretty sure about winning this as most people on eBay don't even know what it is.
You're welcome Jens. Hope it works out for you.
oldskool, good luck with the auction.
oldskool --you are a good guy, after all !!
14 hours left -- dont forget
already US $103.50 ....
OK ,I`d like to buy a used Daisy-player as well...
wake up fred --14 minutes left -good luck you guys
Happy Yay's for jens and Olds.
Alright!!! Freddie won! I was "shadowing" the auction and had my bid ready to go just in case he was away.
wow!
great thanks a lot you guys!
Fred I`ll PP the amount to you -just tell me the details....

Let me find out what the shipping to Germany is going to be and I'll let you know. Glad I could be of help for you and your son. That's what life and s2g is about! I will be in contact with the seller as far as when it will ship to me.
Now if I could get that dang CP-7...
I'm winning so far on that one too. Wish me luck!

Thaks for having my back guys! I made a point to hang around and watch it this morning. Almost forgot...I put in a fat max bid!
And if I had to move I was wireless watching it! Even outside!
thanks again!
and good luck for the cp7!!!
CP-7 is on the way as well as your Handi-Cassette!
I thought I'd have it this weekend but I just recieved a tracking number so it may arrive Monday. I work out of town so the earliest I could ship is Friday. I hope that's OK and I hate to keep you waiting but the postman comes when he comes.
Can you not use a regular dictation walkman
with a loudspeaker in it?
They work very well, maybe better!
I do work for peoples with bad eyesight rather
often for my work, and these days they have
these cd players for listening to books and
newspapers and magazines, but most people have
difficulty using them because they put the cd
in there upside down, but most people still
have a cassette recorder but the media is
only available on cd these days!
Most people do wish it still would be available
on cassette tape.
My wife told me yesterday that a "small" box arrived at the house for a change!
This must be the Handi-Cassette. It will go out this weekend! To quote Walkgirl, "SUPERYAY!!!"
great!
let`s see how it is...
I'll send you pics of the unit and the packaging it will be in. I won't get home until Friday though.
Well done OldSkool! Hooray for Jens too. Blessings to your son my friend.

In our small lifetimes we have few opportunities to help one another. It is with this thought in mind that I always pray for one another and when a door opens up with an opportunity to physically help I will. I really don't see it as a favor but doing what I'm supposed to do for my fellow man when he legitimately needs a hand. Anytime my friend, anytime.
Very well said OldSkool.

I think I'm getting a little misty-eyed. That's beautiful, Freddie!
Just tell me the final amount Fred!
I`ll PP the money to you then.
btw:
I do not need the plug power supply-since it's for 110 volts.
Already has the transformer packed along with a little something to get your son going. Check PM for the price and copies of reciept and customs form.
done.
THANKS A LOT ,OS !!!unit arrived without complications.
Fully functional - like new .
I'll post my son`s opinion `bout it tomorrow-he`s in bed now.
This has made my year so far. I really feel blessed that I had a chance to not only help out a member but the family as well. If our economy doesn't tank (unfortunately doesn't look that way) I want to surprise my wife with a trip to Germany in 2009/10. I will definitely be looking you and Tom up!
Let me know if I can help with anything else!
This is what the STEREO2GO family is all about
Gives me a warm feeling inside
Nice one OS69, your a credit to this site

For Oldskool:
I thought of you:
“Do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, to all the souls you can, in every place you can, at all the times you can, with all the zeal you can, as long as ever you can”
Thanks ED!
