the cleaning process could not have gone any easier, better or faster ----
we didnt even have to open up the boxes to clean them --totally--
and better than that --we played our best tapes all the way thru the procedure
it was like that old tire spray commercial :
1. sit on the couch
2. shoot some orange glow at the box
3. hose her down !!
time elapsed = 4 minutes
results :: see for yourselves

great scott ira
wrong!!!!
Wow! Orange Glo is actually able to morph a Helix into a Candle. Let me tell you, if it can change my GPX into a Marantz, I'll start buying the stuff by the box lot!
this stuff can morph a GPX into a booby.

just now referred to google--
to verify that bobbys booby was accurate --
sho iz
I'm sold!
notice that that boobys coloring scheme is quite similar to several GPX models

i've been using orange glo for yrs,the stuff is awesome!
I put it on my cereal, Betty calls it OrangeGo
JC -- we didnt even know they already had Almond Joys way up there in canada --
ya know - with the time zone problems an all ---
thats so hip .
rbj,
even stranger...Almond GLO is made by an American company, yet U.S. members tell me it can't be found in the U.S.A.! And, we've got your chocolate bars too!
Time zone problems? Nah...we fixed that a while back...
JC --perhaps you may have read about it up there --
our USA government (down here) --
has some leadership and management problems !!
ira i thought you went to bed its pass your bedtime
soon ---
but not quite yet, junior

Yeah, so do we!
Great job Ira!!!!
Wow!!!
I have visions of you rubbing spotty, grinning from ear to ear with increasing vigor and self-satisfaction as the paint specs practically jumped off the box!
Admit it, you were feeling quite pleased with yourself during those moments, eh!!!???
Contrats on your successful score!
Now, how does the box actually sound?
JT --both the mint candle and the beater helix sound identical --they are EXTREMELY clear , and both have terrific tuners --
with superb separation and wide-mode-
i did luck out on the helix --
as a subtle plug --
the candle is for sale on the s2g sales forum
Right on...
Not to hijack Ira's thread here... but Orange Glo did not help these spots... They look like aluminum oxidation marks. Anyone have any ideas as to what might help get rid of these?
Tch tch tch...see, ya shoulda used
almond GLO!
...but seriously JT, those marks look as if they are actually etched into the aluminium. It's likely that anything strong enough to remove them, just might remove more that you bargained for.
You could tell yourself that it's "vintage patina" which attests to the bbx's authenticity, and longevity, thereby increasing the bbx's value and desireability...with the added bonus of providing bragging rights...for the metal content of your bbx. It's real, and it's vintage...enjoy!
with joe cool
most of my boxes have that exact 'vintage' feature
its ok -- really
Okay... One of my life-mottos is that if you can't laugh at yourself, then you don't deserve to laugh at others.... This has actually worked pretty good for me.
I bring this up because I just now realized that the "beater" Helix and the Candle are two different boxes. I thought that the Candle is the same box that Ira just bought, that we have endearingly named Spotty! I'm feeling pretty foolish right now...!
Anyway, as for the spots on my Panny RX-F9, my last shot may be to try some stainless steel cleaner that I saw at Walmart, right next to the Orange Glo.
Have any of you ever used stainless steel cleaner? And how would that affect brushed aluminum? Or should I just leave well enough alone and leave it as is?
JT-- as with every other chemical cleaner
you must try it out on something less important than your panny box --
try it first on your stainless steel sink --
or on some worthless Sharp box !!
Or if you ever bought any boxes from the 'Skank!
with rbj.
Personally, I would err on the side of caution, and not attempt it. Aluminum trim is usually very thin, and often has a protective coating (to help preserve silk-screened lettering, etc). Stainless-steel cleaner, even in fine powder form, is an effective abrasive, and is intended to scour well, stainless steel, a much harder, more durable surface than the very thin trim used for bbxs. It's likely that cross-scratching will occur on the trim, which will actually spoil it's appearance, and probably also remove any control lettering.
Remember also, that other products that may be used for cleaning (WD-40 for example) are very effective at removing any and all lettering...in an instant.
In most cases, I prefer to have my bbxs sparkling, minty fresh...and most are, but sometimes, you come across one now and then, that is actually better off by leaving well enough alone. Clean with warm soapy water, yes...but forget the harsh chemicals-they can make matters far worse.
Oh, I almost forgot...don't forget to lavish some tlc on your gem and pamper it with a finishing buff with
almond GLO!
I have posted some of my former boomers on FB...
most with some aluminum.
I guess I can live with it the way it is. I got it for all of $14.
Tape deck needs basic service for belt & lube, otherwise its just those aluminum spots that are an issue.

So superficial, it's the beauty
within that holds the key to your (true) happiness. In life, age spots happen. Just be glad our beloved bbxs don't get wrinkles!
