Oh yes, I've been drooling over that since the concept several years ago.

Me want one bad but may not even get the chance for a long time. They already have preorders on the 2009 model. The 2008 model has been sold out for months and it hasn't even been released yet.

erniejade - 2008-02-21 08:07

One HUGE problem with this car for me. No ragtop option yet. Needs to have a ragtop!

jt - 2008-02-21 17:33

MSRP = $43k

So someone's paying over $100k for some race tickets, airfare and a meet & greet with Kyle Petty...! I hope they can write off alot of this as a charity donation, otherwise I really don't get it,

Well done with the retro styling by Dogde, though. Can't wait to see the new Chevy Camaros on the road soon (like the one in the Transformers movie). Anyone know when those are going to start being sold?

jt - 2008-02-21 17:35

Sorry, correction.... MSRP $41,985

It seems that when the car companies want to bring back old styles, they never look as good as the original. The original challenger was pretty sleek looking. The new one is chunky looking. The same can be said of the Mustang.I think the best looking was the 1969 model.Though the present model looks similar,it is chunkier with duller lines.Everything in contemporary times just seems to have tankish proportions.Don't think I'm putting this new Challenger down though.I'm sure it will be a wonderful car!I just wonder why with all their money, technology, and resources that the car companies are so empty when it comes to styling. They have to go back 30 years for inspiration and end up with something the doesn't look as good as the original.Just go forward.Perhaps it has something to do with government regulations and safety. Also it used to be that what wind cheating was assumed to be correct.Personally I wish they wouldn't put designs into wind tunnels. There's no true automotive style it seems anymore. The end product is always so compromised.

I agree with Jovie. Car companies always seem to flash their kick-ass concept cars at the shows, but never seem to get around to making them. They just go right back to making their rounded corners, no extra body detailing, and overall homogenous designs. There are rare exceptions though. Can someone tell me why Dodge went and made a 4-door piece of crap car and called it a Charger? Confused That's sacrilegious in my book. Whenever you mention Dodge Charger, people generally think of the 1969 body style made famous by the Dukes of Hazzard. My, how far the American car companies have fallen!

Which would you buy based simply on looks? American or (primarily) German?

oldskool69 - 2008-02-22 12:38

I think when it comes to U.S. manufactured cars that actually took a step back successfully I think of the Corvette. The new motors have the thump of the original last serious 427's, and the body reminds you of the 68-82 era. But like anything your going to have a modern twist. One thing is for sure with all of the models mentioned earlier is that no one will mistake them for something else if they know what they are looking at. I think that was the whole point with the retro look. Keep it familiar but make it new enough that more than Grandpa would be interested. Remember also, new frame, safety requirements, and cost factors play into this as well. Big Grin

Fatdog I agree that the current Charger was a dirty trick to play with that name plate.
Seems most of these decisions are made by arrogant older males who think they are in touch with society. They really aren't in touch since they live in a privelaged part of society and spend to much time bean counting. Everybody tends to play it safe with cars so I really am pleased with the Challenger, they finally brought out something that many people have been begging for. The Ford Mustang is another great example of giving the masses what they are asking for. Some people really chastise the idea of producing something new based on an old design, same with boomboxes. Really what's wrong with some old designs and why do they create such negative emotion with some people?

I'm happy they are bringing back the Challenger based on the best design the car even had. Not so happy about the price as it will keep it out of reach for most people except those that have a lot of extra money laying around, again the privelaged few. Well the current gas prices will be enough to keep many of us from buying the car anyway. So I say way to go Dodge and lets just enjoy the Challenger any way we can.

no thanks, i'll stick to the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T

jvc.floyd - 2008-02-22 14:23

my big weakness is the monte carlo ss ,the old skool ones that is.

jovie - 2008-02-24 07:38

Concerning the latest Corvette,it has some subtle nice curvy details if you get up close. However if you stand back and take in the design as a whole it's just a duller silhouette of the one from the 1970s.The wind tunnel probably indicated they didn't need much body contour at all. However they probably added it anyway because it's what people expect to see.The flatter shark fenders as a design feature just look anemic and compromised. If it involves compromise,be innovative and find a totally new direction. From a distance the overall shape of the Vette looks like one of those really cheap dollar store model cars I remember from the 1970s.Those looked sort of like they were trying to reproduce the lines of the real car and it's the best the toy car company could do.

I remember the really pretty and curvacious last generation RX-7 fondly. After that came out Chevrolet decided to add some analog curves to the totally "digital" looking Vette.Though it looks better for the modifications, this highlights just how bad the previous model had looked.Of course these observations are purely superficial.I'm sure if I got behind the wheel of a newer Corvette or the Charger my dissatisfaction with the styling would quickly be forgotten!

daiwa - 2008-02-24 08:34

I Agree

Oh that Challenger, it looks hot because they followed the lines of the orginal. I've seen the new corvettes around, they are BADARSsE!
