Hello, one of my coworkers has this turntable (pic below), he said he paid $350 for it overseas I think, he gave me a bunch of his old equipment but won't give me the turntable, he wants to sell it to me, what would be a fair price?
it's a JVC QL-Y55F, I already looked on E-bay and craigslist didn't find any.
As 70's japanese TTs go, this is high end. 250E tops
A fair price if fully functional would be 300(Good)-$400(Mint). JVC wasn't known for turntables but that one was one of their better ones.
thanks for the replies, what is the euro to dollar conversion?
I think he bought this around 1982, I know he bought all of his stereo equipment from whatever military base he was on so the prices were probably discounted quite a bit. Anyway today he asks me if I can hook it up to test it, I said sure, he says he hasn't used it in a while but it was working, so he's bringing it into work tomorrow so I can take it home and check it out, than he told me we'd work something out, I told him I would take his turntable and let him mow my lawn,LOL.
he also says he has both tone arms that it came with the straight and the curved one.
I'll see what happens tomorrow, thanks again.
He is probably right about the $350. These sold for about $50-75 more off base.
I know he is regretting giving me his Klipsch hersey speakers, he mentioned pricing out a new set and they were going for around $800 each

You lucky SOB (and a few expletives I forgot) !!!
actually he gave me the speakers, a JVC tape deck ( pretty sure it was top of the line at the time), a Kenwood cd changer ( which I thru out since no one wanted it), 2 17" computer monitors, a printer, a brand new wireless keyboard and mouse and a used wireless keyboard, think that was all of it. you can start cursing now

what kind of cart. is installed on the turntable?
he gave me the turntable today to take home to see if it works, it seems like it works ok so far, dustcover has some nice scratches in it, cartridge is a jvc, don't know which one.
looks like a standard head-shell mount, so you could put many differnet carts on there. I've been out the world of vinyl for a while now - I didn't know there was such a reange of prices these days:

for the $ if you need a new cart. the denon DL160 is just fantastic. I am running one with a Pro-ject Tube Box II SE pre just fantastic.
Even thought the denon is a moving coil, it is a high output so it will work with a standard phono input.
They are a good turntable ..... Only thing you need to be careful is with the ED servo tonearm. If the servo malfunctions they are unrepairable ..., and given it's 25 years of age, the survival rate is now poor
I had a Sansui TT with the same type of servo arm, and it broke my heart having to through it out becuase of a defective servo arm
