What kind of music do -YOU- listen to?

asdexander - 2008-06-22 06:45

Ello fellow members.

Been thinking of this a while, and i don't think that many of us really play old school hip-hop on our ghettoblasters. So, what kind of music do you people usually listen to? What kind of music is blasting out of your speakers?
Name your 5 top favourite artists and genre of them!

I'll start:

1. Daft Punk (Electronic/dance)
2. Le Knight Club (Oldschool House)
3. Justice (Distort/electronica)
4. Digitalism (Dance/pop/electronica)
5. Crookers (Club/dance)

(Not sure if this is a old topic, but whattahell)

walkgirl - 2008-06-22 07:39

I do not know any of those bands!

Damnit, people have a tendency to say that..

Give us examples of your favourites Big Grin

idontknow - 2008-06-22 07:55

I cant make a top 5 list of my favourite artists. There are just so many i like many different genres so i just make a little list over genres and some of my favourite artists.

I listen to:
Rock (modern, old, stoner) : Qotsa, Rage aganinst the machine, Death from above 1979, Eagels of death metal, Led Zeppelin, Fu Manchu, Orange Goblin, Jimi Hendrix, The white stripes, Kyuss, ect.

Electronic: Justice, Digitalism, Simian mobile disco, the chemical brotheres, Daft Punk, ect.

Blues: Robert Johnson, Freddy King, Charley Patton, Blind Willie McTell, Son House, ect.

These are just some of my favourites but i guess you can get a picture of what kind of music i like.

And havent really thougt of if but i think there should be more music discussions on this forum.

walkgirl - 2008-06-22 08:09

Well,I do not really have favourite bands, because
I like most music ( not rap because that is no
music ), also because I am rather eclectic

The band I like since the 80s is Van Halen

Well,Vandenberg is not bad either but they
only made a few nice songs

2steppa - 2008-06-22 08:15

I can't give a definitive favourite 5, but 5 examples of my musical heaven....

1. Mr Fingers - Can You Feel it (Chicago House)
2. Todd Edwards - God Will Be There (Garage)
3. Paul Hardcastle - Rainforest (Electro)
4. Future Beat Alliance - Audio Photo (Deep House)
5. Cornelius Oliphant - It's Your Turn To Cry (Soul/Funk)

Basically, UK/US Garage, House, Reggae, Soul/Dance and Hiphop and a bit of the new Dubstep stuff emerging out of the UK lately too.

But I'm always open to hearing new stuff and tend to like individual songs/tracks that appeal to me without needing to categorise or give it a specific 'tag'.

Good point.. We're a bunch of collectors of things that play music. But we dont talk about the music itself!

Pretty controversial statement there Walkgirl Laugh Out Loud

But I agree with Van Halen, they've done some pretty decent tunes.

fatdog - 2008-06-22 08:51

Since it would be nearly impossible to pick just five top songs from my vast collection, I'll just list the top five genres that get played (with some artist examples):

Southern Rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Ted Nugent)
Old-School Electro (Kraftwerk, Cybotron)
Old-School Rap (Whodini, Word of Mouth, T La Rock)
Country (George Strait, Randy Travis, Vince Gill)
Jazz (John Coltrane, David "Fathead" Newman, Johnny Hartman)

walkgirl - 2008-06-22 08:51

Not controversial, just my opinion

When I hear rap music on the radio I switch the
radio off, the same as grudge or grunge or what
it is called

vladi123456 - 2008-06-22 09:09

1. Old school rock - Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Rolling Stones, Van Halen and such
2. 80s music - Duran Duran, INXS, the Cure etc
3. Black metal - Dimmi Borgir type
4. I actually like to listen to the opera and classical. As far as opera - I favor mostly Italian music - Puccini, Rossini and so on. And classical - I prefer Russian.
5. Modern(-ish) Rock - Pear Jam, System of a Down and such

Right now I'm listening to Bob Marley

2steppa - 2008-06-22 09:17

matrixambience - 2008-06-22 12:55

Adam (Thafuzz) and I have the same tastes in music!!! I very fond of all music that came out in the greatest decade for music: The 1970's! From 1970 thru 1979 is best ever!

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-22 12:57

including disco matrix? Leaving

thafuzz - 2008-06-22 16:01

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-22 16:24

hey Adam,i guess u weren't in chicago burning the bee gees albums at comisky park then huh? Laugh Out Loud

matrixambience - 2008-06-23 07:12

Hey Jared......no problem with disco music! From 1975-79...Disco pretty much drenched the airwaves with its throbbing beat and funky lyrics that you can actually understand.....and dance to if ya liked! I was in my pre-teen years when Disco was born,so naturally i liked it...along with KISS,Ramones,Sex Pistols,Fleetwood Mac,Eagles,Blackfoot,Molly Hatchet,Rod Stewart,Van Halen,Foreigner,Journey...the list goes on and on.....the 70's had it all!

matrixambience - 2008-06-23 07:15

BTW...that Comisky Park Disco record burning thing was a joke!!!Apparently, they didn't get all of the records because my record collection is vast full of Disco songs...no shame there!!! Those were good times!!

gluecifer - 2008-06-23 08:22

This is a great idea, as stated, it'd be great discuss music more. Especially what boxes sound the best with what styles of music. Could turn up some really interesting combinations especially based on the production of recordings from different vintages.

My favourite music/bands are:

Rock'n Roll: Gluecifer, Turbonegro, Hellacopters, Motorhead, Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, Led Zepplin, Monster Magnet

Old Skool Hip Hop: RUN-DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, anything off Sugar Hill Records. Then early 90s rap, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, N.W.A

Death Metal/Grindcore: Terrorizer, Napalm Death, Carcass, Xysma, Dismember, Autopsy, Slayer, Righteous Pigs, Bathory, Crematory(swe), Multiplex.

Techno/Electronic: Daft Punk, Chromeo, Space Art, Jean Michel Jarre, Justice, Phoenix, Air, Tepr, Space Cowboy, Dax Riders, Fischerspooner, M83, The Go! Team, Underworld

I grew up in ther late 70s/80s and adore 80s pop/hip hop music of virtually any denomination. I'm a firm believer the high point for pop/rap/experimental/metal/anything else music (except rock!)was from 1981-1988.

Looking forward to reading others favourites!

Rock on.

asdexander - 2008-06-24 02:54

Quite interesting that everyone here have such a broad taste in music. Is your musical taste mostly influenced by earlier days, or is it constantly changing?

I know i for instance practically only listen to new music in the genres i like..

2steppa - 2008-06-24 05:02

My tastes began with listening to all the new 12" soul/dance tunes my uncle was buying when I visited him in London back in the early 80's, when he was starting out in the DJ game... bands like Freeez, Shalamar, D-Train, Imagination, Sharon Redd, Level 42, SOS Band etc.. Also discovering the London pirate stations in the mid-80's and all the great new tracks they played way before other stations had even heard of them (continues to this day too).
Also my early days at school when New Romantic was the thing (Visage, Ultravox, Duran, Japan, Human League, Heaven 17 etc..) although I probably like that stuff more now than I did back then!

Acctually i kind of have the same experience, i was introduced to some serious music-listening when he was doing his DJ-Thing. A nice portal to new fresch music!

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-24 07:18

Smile it's interesting how your tastes in music evolves and descends over time. My Grandpop and Great uncle were Promotors and Agents In Ny,Many yrs ago, They introduced me to alot of Jazz,R&b and Classic rock Groups from The 50's,Like the Platters,Drifters,The shirelles,The 5 Satins,Etc,Being around those artists as a young kid and seeing them perform in High school auditoriums and Nightclubs influenced my taste in Music ,and i really got into it. That was my Pre teen music exposure, that's the main reason i think i wasn't into Disco in the 70's, i was around all these early rock n roll pioneers, when listening to what we now call oldies wasn't hip or cool.

redbenjoe - 2008-06-24 09:43

dire staits -- Smile

pepino - 2008-06-24 19:30

my music taste is identical to ford93 plus hienergy

daiwa - 2008-06-25 10:01

HA, now we’re talking Gluecifer! Turbonegro are cool! (how about the Dwarves?!) Yeah, and Monster Magnet have been around for a long time and have a great catalog of music. Some of their earlier records are quite trippy. I just pulled out “Dopes To Infinity” from 1995, my favorite M.M. album) You have appreciation for many forms of music G. I feel that too, and I love many different flavors but mostly NEW music, like my art, I like artists pushing the envelope. I am not a classic rock guy, because as a writer, singer, drummer, I’m always looking for something new and inventive in sound and arrangement.

I remember in College, hearing KC and the Sunshine band, and thought, “yeah, here’s something to score ladies at the dance club with”, but then I heard Kiss’s DEUCE and STRUTTER, and I realized that those two forms of music could never really co-exist in my world. Within weeks, I was doing dual air-guitars with my buddies to FIREHOUSE and damning disco! The whole Studio 54, coke addled masses were strapping on large collars, fat bell bottoms, five inch heals and lots of bling bling, and it was easy to distance from all that silliness. Of course, today, I embrace the era as one of Pop Culture’s coolest times, and think the Disco boxes, gaudy as they are, are so cool.

Then, another big happening in the late 70’s that turned my rock world up=side=down. A buddy of mine stopped by in his 1971 Ford Mach I Mustang, with a new CD by this “funny” band from the UK called “the Sex Pistols”.

We put the tape in his EIGHT TRACK PLAYER (which by the way was mounted in his glove compartment!) and drove around town listening to it. At first, we laughed, thought it was a joke. Then, we listened to it again. “F this and F that, I don’t want a ba-by that looks like that!” man, we started understanding that this album was more than just some PUNKS being outrageous. There was a certain “shove it” attitude that we immediately embraced, and well I was already a huge Iggy Pop fan, so this new “in your face” raw sound was to my liking. We knew after the third listen to “Anarchy in the U.K.”, "Bodies", "God Save The Queen", that everything was about to change.

When Elvis Costello first came out, in 1977 with “My Aim is True”, it floored me. My two favorite types of music, Punk and Pop, melded together with biting lyrics. I love great singer song writer’s with great lyrics, like Graham Parker, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, John Lennon, and newer version: Joseph Arthur... Much of my early punk interest was the great UK punk/ska bands like The Members, The Clash, XTC, The Kinks, Wreckless Eric, The Stranglers, The Damned, Nick Lowe, The Tigers, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Shriekback, Sioxsie and the Banshees, The Buzzcocks, Magazine (Howard Devoto), Madness, New Model Army...

STIV BATORS - Dead Boys, Lords of the New Church

In America, bands like The Ramones, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, MC5, The Talking Heads, Dead Kennedys, The Romantics, Devo, New York Dolls, The Dictators, Fear, The Dead Boys *later: Lords of the New Church (w/ the late, great, Stiv Bators) they were all reflecting the whole punk movement in Great Britain and making music more accessable to the garage band mentality. Even though my Grandfather classically trained me to love the classical masters like Bach and Beethovan, I’ve always been drawn to the rawness of sound and emotion in alternative/punk music.

My favorite All Time album, Iggy Pop’s “NEW VALUES”

So, in effect, punk rock saved me from having to suffer years of Hair rock which is where I lost interest in the genre, when it went from “Hard Rock” to “Glam/Hair Rock”, punk gave me a new, emotional direction. After really getting into rock with bands like Emerson, Lake and Palmer (the bridge from classical to rock...), and their German countnerpart Trivumirat (Jürgen Fritz) drew me into the space/arena rock movement with bands like Yes, Queen, Sweet, Blue Oyster Cult, Hawkwind, Cheap Trick, The Scorpions, AC-DC, Judas Priest, Julian Cope, Lou Reed, John Cale, Tom Waits, Vandergraff Generator, Kraftwerk, Roxy Music, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band,

ALEX HARVEY - Vambo Rule!

and one of my all time favorites, Electric Light Orchestra (Jeff Lynne, one of the great writers of all time in my book. I have recently filled in my ELO collection, and my all time favorite ELO: 1973’s “On the Third Day” - when I listen to ELO, I hear so much Beatles, like no other artist, I think Jeff Lynne had that much talent as a writer, and his arrangements and integration of voice and instrument, perhaps George Martin-esque orchestrations, were brilliant...)

Currently stuff I’m listening to: Jason Falkner, Pernice Brothers, New Pornographers, Lagwagon, Fountains of Wayne, Queens of the Stone Age, The Eels, The Figgs, The Mekons, Turin Brakes, Juliana Hatfield, The Start, Film School, Kings of Leon

Wow, one of my longest posts in ages. (break in classes and teaching!) But, if I’m going to talk music, it’s my favorite subject, it has affected my life like nothing else has, as a collector and being able to still play at a high level in the clubs, have a band that plays out regularly, and are about to release some vinyl here one of these days (hopefully on Auto Reversers’ label, Gamelfliesch) and I feel fortunate to have that outlet, keeps me from robbing banks... ha. Great discussion post Asdexander! DD

Haven't even bothered with the newer stuff, I pretty much only checked for 'Oxygene' (first heard in music lesson at school, blown away by it) then I quite liked 'Equinoxe'. Not really my type of electronica though, I'm more into deep, melodic, soulful downtempo House.

petey.awol - 2008-06-25 13:39

MF Doom
East Flatbush Project
The Artifacts
BDP
De La Soul
Wu Tang Clan

thats enough for now....sick of looking up Youtube link HAHAHA

Basically , straight up hip hop. It dont gotta be gangsta either. Just banging beats with rediculous flows.

However all old funk records and classic rock, mixed in some heavy metal, and not to forget all that underground techno, breaks, dnb, jungle, glitchy breaks.

Im all over the place with my tunes.

Did I mention I love Stevie Wonder?

gluecifer - 2008-06-27 08:35

Daiwa: Yeah, Dwarves are awesome, saw them live down here a few years ago. Great live show, pure energy.

Loved reading your post, I find people's 'musical paths' really interesting. It's just awesome when you hear something new that you've never heard before and it just blows you away and changes your musical appreciation entirely.

Rock On.

daiwa - 2008-06-27 14:16

Thanks Glue. The Dwarves album covers are some of the wildest ever! That's what I always tell people, there's so much music in our world, especially available now with the internet.

late 60's 70's 80's and 90's stuff

el.rojo.grande - 2008-06-27 21:41

I've found the Space Age Bachelor Pad is quite enjoyable. It is from the late 50s and early 60s and uses Moog and other primitive synthesizers with a lot of percussion and accordion too. One other feature is that it was mixed with some screwball stereo separation that often galloped from speaker to speaker to show off one's hi-fi capabilities. There was a revival of this music on the Ultra-louge label in the mid 90s and it can be found on the web at soma-fm.com on the Illinoise Street Lounge feed, or directly through i-tunes, for all you MAC fans, such as myself.

Enjoy!
