Worlds biggest PHILIPS boombox! Destruction?

viennasound - 2009-01-24 10:34

At the southend of Vienna is the "Wienerberg".
A small hill with a big road over it and 2 sights.
You can see them from many kilometers ago, when you come over the highway A2.
Because both are illuminated at night.

First one is the old watertower of the 10. district.
Very beautiful old building.

Short look over the skyline off the tower:

The tower:

Look from the top of the tower to the "twintower-city"

The second one is the big PHILIPS headquarter.
Some older people call it the GHETTOBLASTER.
Why? One moment.
Here the look when you entering vienna from the southend:

In the seventies everybody thought it´s too modern for vienna. Now you can call it "oldskool" Smile

Interesting construction:

Is´nt it a littlebit looking like a blaster with detachable speakers? Roll Eyes

But the real reason why it is called so, results in the late 80´s. A few month there was a giant reclam net over the whole building, makes it looking like a monster-boombox.
I hav´nt a pic, so here a bad photoshop.
I hope you can imagine how it had looked like... Wink

But since a few weeks, there ist destruction around. The sub-building is broken down! Eek

Today in the morning:
It´s complete down!

Many bulldozers now working there

Will the big blaster survive?
I hope so... Tap Toes

New buildings all around.
In the 70´s it was the biggest building all around. Now it´s one of the smallest...

I hope this legendary house survive.
But when they make a big building in front of it, you won´t see it from far any more. Mad

But it seems, Philips is down everywhere.
There was a own town of this brand, the "Philips high tech campus". But now it´s only a shadow of itself.

Own railroad station of our line:

But i think this needs a own story... Roll Eyes

its disturbing the amount of really cool twentieth century buildings are taken down now and replaced with really horrible new ones.
well phillips has hit some hard times in the last few years.
i think they used to rake in the cash from thier patent on the cd player. it was something i think breahted new life into them from the eighties until the turn of this century.
interesting they are such a huge company. i wonder what there future holds for them.
