very nice minty good to see you get your grail

minty - 2012-07-09 07:23

Here is my newly purchased Sony WM-701T. I have always wanted one of these rare walkmans. This one is number 101/250. It is in lovely condition, and comes complete with all accessories. It comes in a lovely hardwood box, with ebonised edges. The box has a real feel of quality. I have pictured it alongside my 701S. The 701T has more of a handmade feel to it. The writing on the 701S is more sharp, i think it was maybe done using a laser. Where as the Tiffany looks to have been finished by hand, the writing not being as sharp. This one was expensive, but i think it was worth it for such a beautiful and rare walkman.

As I can see you finally found one, as I know you been looking for one for years. Nice walkman, condition look pretty good .

minty - 2012-07-09 11:30

Yes, it is in wonderful condition. Comes complete with the original blue Tiffany outer box. It is different to the 701S in that the inside of the door has a brushed finish. The 701S has a matt finish. Two very nice Walkmans though.

WOW you have the holy grail of the Walkman in your collection.
Congratulations !

As far as I know, has Sony these exclusive items never sold ,

they are gifts to famous and important people.

Do you know who the original owner of your Tiffany-Walkman#101 was ?

minty - 2012-07-09 13:06

Apparently it was given to John Entwhistle, from rock band the who. Possibly the greatest bass player ever. I have researched the provenance of this information, and discovered it was sold on the US show Pawn Stars by his wife. Nice to have piece of rock and roll history!

cool

Minty that is a lifetime accomplishment. Great effort.  I am a big WHO fan and too own such a piece of famous history and that so few people will ever own such a thing that is truly at the top of the rarest of Walkman Collecting.   The center showcase item !!!

minty - 2012-07-13 13:30

Thanks John. I don't think my type of collecting is to everyone's taste. Maybe they see these items as bling. But one mans pie is another mans poison. But for me, it is the rarity of an item that make me want to collect it. This is why my collection is not very large. Only certain models interest me. There are maybe three more models I really want. may take a few more years to get these!

Just saw the pawn stars episode.

"It's worth about 2 dollars!"

"It's worth more than that but he did overpay for the damn thing!"

"I'll give you 50 bucks if you (the pawn shop owner's Dad) can put this tape in there in less than 30 seconds."

"It doesn't fit!"

"Just slam it shut, get it in there!"

Hilarious. (note: They did not even test it before buying it for $1250.)

retrodos - 2012-07-13 23:22

What season and episode of Pawnstars was that on, would like to see that, would be funny, as I bet most didn't even know what it was?

But they are worth as much as the  a buyer is willing to pay and  a seller is willing to accept. Plus I know he been after this model for years, since I sold him one of mine 701s, but kept the 701t as it was the only one I have, plus it when over $2200 years ago, so 3k not to far off as they are rare and only given to given out to company officers and celebs most of them were given as a gift for many famous singers, like "The Who" and never sold retail. The way I look at it as a nice piece of history and a investment. Plus shock a pawn shop would pay even $1250 for it, but the guys their are a little more knowledgeable.

Season 4, EP 58. Silence of the Lambo. They don't really know anything about Walkmans, they just seemed to make a 60%-ish offer of the seller's price. The fact that it is a Tiffany endorsed product plated silver and the celebrity ownership part helps I guess.

minty - 2012-07-14 03:10

You could say my Walkman is a bit of a celebrity! Anyway, it's my birthday today. Bastille day. Also, billy the kid was shot and killed by Pat Garret on this day in 1881. Off for a few beers now to celebrate!

Congratulations, Minty!

I have been researching the beautiful box that comes with this walkman, and have discovered it was made by the famous cigar box maker Daniel Marshall.

Daniel Marshall are famous for making bespoke cigar boxes. They have been commissioned by many famous people to produce once of pieces. One example is four beautiful tissue boxes made from a rare ebony which were commissioned by prince Rainier. One for each of his palaces.

The box which was made for the Tiffany Walkman is made from madrona burl. This is a pretty rare wood, and hard to work due to its tendency to warp and twist. The box also has 24ct gold plated hinges and locking mechanism.

It is a truly wonderful example of craftsmanship, and a wonderful box indeed. The walkman ain't half bad either.
