What are you favorite headphones?

skippy1969 - 2009-03-31 22:43

I was just wondering what kind of headphones everyone uses(if any). My favorites are these Sony MDR-V7's I picked them up at Goodwill a while ago for $4.99 and I was blown away by their sound. And they are very comfortable. I wear them at night when I don't want to disturb anyone in my family who is sleeping.

sinister - 2009-03-31 23:01

i have a bunch of old audio technicas
they are pretty hard to beat.

gluecifer - 2009-03-31 23:15

Only ones I have are my Sennheiser PX-100's, which are nice for junky mp3-style formats, but aren't great on subtle details and 'hifi sound'.

They're very, very robust though, had mine for years and they've suffered plenty of abuse, still work/fold perfectly. Great for Ipods and such, but not so much for sitting back and getting lost in the music though.

Rock On.

blaster - 2009-03-31 23:25

Koss porta-pros

aa.fussy - 2009-03-31 23:41

Now got a lovely sounding pair of TDK's for home use, and my Numark's for DJ'ing (seriously loud and punchy).

and both sound awesome Nod Yes

ricktv - 2009-04-01 15:27

I've pretty much gone all-Sennheiser. Used to love my AKG 240s, but you need serious juice to drive them at a decent level. So I got a pair of HD580s for a birthday about 10 years ago and just fell in love with them all over again last year.

For portable purposes, I got a good deal on PX 100s. And for testing, work, and stuff like that, a pair of HD420SLs I paid $5 at a Goodwill.

I do admit to having a pair of Sony hi-end buds, but I'm not swept for sticking things into my ears, so it's rare that I use them, good as they sound.

jt - 2009-04-01 15:50

For DJ-ing... Sony MDR-V700

For casual home listening... Grado Labs SR-80

masterblaster84 - 2009-04-01 20:28

Tried Grado SR-80's, SR-225's, AKG K701's, Sennheiser HD-595's and BeyerDynamic DT-880's but the Sennheiser HD-650's just packed to much comfort and great sound so that's my only pair of full size now. I use a set of Sony headphones (Don't recall the model) that wrap around my neck for MP3 player use.

sdbobbyt - 2009-04-01 21:16

I Agree with Ira again! Roll Eyes

aza - 2009-04-07 04:23

These would have to be my favorite.
Very light and comfortable and sound great, but need to be pushed to really appreciate them.

In the box are the original ones purchased in 1971.
The other pair pictured are the re-released 50th anniversary pair. Not sure what year that was.
Picked those ones up for $3 at a garage sale !

redbenjoe - 2009-04-07 06:59

Smile
AZA --i was lucky to have bought the 414 new 'back then' --they lasted and sounded so great --for 20 years - now lost --

sennheiser has often promoted that they have made the 'new and improved' edition --

but , imho, they never came close --

these are/were THE VERY BEST !!!

moncheeto - 2009-04-07 07:02

kballenger53 - 2009-05-20 14:09

Transwave5000, I haven't seen a pair of those since I was in the Navy!!! I can remember one of my shipmates aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, (CVN-69), having a pair of those. He used to let me borrow them sometimes.

I swear to GOD, everytime he loaned them to me, he was always waking me up to get them back!!!

Crystal clear sound. Great for listening to Jazz!!!

Koss Pro4AA are probably the most famous
headphones in the audio world.
Maybe not the best headphones.

Like the GF-777 for boomboxes.

phil1212 - 2009-05-23 02:40

Sennheisers are brilliant designs, almost indestructible and all the parts clip off or are easily removable, and I have found that its usually easy to get replacement parts - off the shelf - even if the 'phones are 10-20 years old. Most of the bottom range / midscale ones I've tried and bought have had a smooth and very flat frequency response. Generally very comfortable for a large closed or semi-open design and I can use them for hours on end - something that cant be said for many other designs.
However I currently have a pair of Goldring DR150's. Very good sound from these and especially well defined bass response. Unfortunately they have a few drawbacks, smaller headband size, so not as comfortable as Sennheisers, tend to get my ears very warm after a short period of time and the build quality is not up there (some parts round the headband are starting to crack - probably my "big" head again - LOL). Also impedance is very low so no doubt they would drain batteries of a portable device pretty quickly. But for listening an hour or so at a time you would have to pay a lot more to get that sort of sound quality.
