Headphones For Walkman DC2 (Other Uses Also)

djlec - 2012-03-20 07:19

My Walkman DC2 will be in use again after it has been returned from repair. I have explored Headphones for this unit and it is time to ask the experts.

If I buy a good set of Headphones I am at a loss for what to look for in Sensitivity since I have been far removed from Cassette players.

I have ordered a pair of Ear Buds (IEM) but I am now looking for a Dual Purpose Headphone which can be used for the Walkman DC2, Cassette Deck, Home Theater Receiver, and or Stereo Tuner.

In my search on this Forum I see Koss PortaPro recommended frequently but if I was to spend more money than this are there any recommendations which are current sold on Amazon or other locations. Some of the recommendations I have found such as the Sennheiser HD485 are not made anymore.

If you have had a look at the Koss PortaPro, have a look at Sennheiser HD100-II very cheap an audiophile bargain.

Hello there!

If I'm about to suggest something, I need to know a few things:

1) do you prefer open-back headphones (usually they have a more expansive sound but noise from your surroundings leaks through your headphones and you can hear it) or closed-back headphones (usually a they have a more focused sound and accentuated bass and also reduce the noise from your surroundings)?

2) is wearing comfort very important to you?

3) how much money are you willing to spend?

There are many brands and a lot more models to choose from so there's no doubt you'll find something that suits your needs. Straight from the head, if it is home theater (surround sound) and music enjoyment (whether in your home or outside) I can recommend the Sennheiser HD558 due to it's integrated sound reflector and angled drivers. They are also lower impedance and sensitive enough for portable players. But like I said, everything depends on the 3 questions.

I am keeping my eyes on your recommendation below but also waiting for the price to go down. have researched the previous Amazon prices and they are too high at $200 right now. have purchased some IEM's and the DC2 is with Doctor Walkman in Italy as I write.

Will also review the Sennheiser HD558 as recommended above also.

Thanks for the recommendations so far.

djlec, so your dc2 is with Dottor.

very excited about the difference between the dottor dc2 and dd9.

i must admit, still prefer the dc2, even if the dd9 is the better one.

Sony MDR-V6 pickup great detail, received a free pair with a broken d6c won off eBay and figure I'll give them a try and was amazed.  A little colored in the low end, but other wise very clean. The mids and highs are very clear and the lows are responsive and present. You can't do better for the price, beat out the Sennheiser HD 280, I'd put the Sony MDR-V6's just about neck-and-neck with the Sennheiser HD25's and yes listen to both..

Try to get hold of a second hand pair of Senns HD590.

These are perfect for home or mobile use and can be had for about £ 60-£80 on ebay
