WORLD's SMALLEST WALKMAN final results

Greatings group Razz Few months ago AO started a fantastic topic OK, so which is the smallest walkman ever made? Many members contributed measurements to this topic. I have taken the results and tabulated / ranked the entrees.

FOUR out of the top 10 are SONY and 3 out of top 10 are PANASONIC.

The official World's Smallest Walkman is " SANYO JJ-P4/P5 "

SANYO JJ-P4

SANYO JJ-P4 measurement results

Main body 104.5 x 69.7 x 18.1 = 131.8
Tape cassette bulge ( front ) 1.0 x 23.6 x 97.1 = 2.29
Hinge 1.0 x 17.4 x 85.6 = 1.49
131.8 mm + 2.29mm + 1.49mm = 135.58 cm3

Original Post
Here are some interesting measurements
TPS-L2 330.28 cm3 nearly 3x size of smallest Walkman

WM-5 243.66 cm3

TOSHIBA KT-R2 LARGEST WALKMAN I HAVE 594.73 cm3

Cassette Tape Case Measurements 58.32 cm3 so about 30% of smallest Walkmans are the actual cassette tape. GUMSTICK Battery is 6.4 cm3. IMPRESSIVE THAT APPROX. 72.6 cm3 of space to cram that now ancient technology into.

Cassette Tape TDK SA90 100 x 63.66 x 8.6 ( head access area 12 mm )
TDK SM-X90 100.18 x 63.7 x 8.55 ( 12 mm )
TDK MA-90 100.1 x 63.60 x 8.6 ( 12.05 mm )
Maxell XLII 100.2 x 63.74 x 8.67 ( 12.05 mm )

HERE YOU CAN REALLY SEE HOW MUCH INSIDE VOLUME IS TAKEN UP BY TAPE AND HOW LITTLE ROOM FOR MECHANICS AMPLIFIER and BATTERY WOW !

When I posted this I PM'd AO about verifying just that. I am unable to confirm your question but I believe they are identical at least in external measurements.
it may not be the biggest but it has to be close. the sanyo m-4440 is both big and heavy AND despite it's huge size it's preddy too. it's the only player i know of or seen that is metalic reddish-burgandy. it's just like the picture in the web-site. it sounds very good too.
WELL typical men .... can see that size matters so here goes the next competition.

PLEASE LETS KEEP THIS TOPIC FOCUS ONLY ON SMALLEST WALKMAN COMMENTS , pictures etc.

Corry for quick reference here were the Panasonic models/measurements ( very accurate ) from original post.

Panasonic
RQ-S75 22.8 x 76.96 x 108.3 = 190.03 cm3
RQ-S44 22.15 x 73.17 x 106.88 = 173.22 cm3
RQ-SX72 17.85 ( 19.40 ) x 75.2 x 109 = 146.31 + 3.55 (Bulge same as SX71) = 149.86 cm3
RQ-SX71 17.5 (18.94 Bulge ) x 75 x 109 = 143.06 cm3
Bulge 1.44 x 22.6 x 109 = 3.55 +143.06 = TOTAL for SX71 146.61 cm3
RQ-SX-91 17.8 (19.2 ) x 75.1 x 109.1 = 145.84 plus 5.5 (Bulge) = 151.34 cm3
Bulge 36 x 1.4 x 109.1 = 5.5

Please take note if model has a bulge for thicker part of cassette or a hinge that sticks out past main body you need to measure separately those and add to main body to get accurate total.
Corry, thank you for finding the player you feel is the smallest. You must measure EXACTLY the dimensions of the player for it to be considered in this topic. A picture of the player will not tell us its actual size. Earlier in this topic I gave you instructions to measure that the other members participated in for this competition.

To upload pictures do a Search ( FIND ) for Upload pictures there are several methods all easy. I use www.tinypic.com

I have one of those and it's quite big but I think my GE "Great Escape" 3-5271A is bigger. That thing is huge. I just wished the FM radio worked. The tape works great but I've only got the radio to work for about 30 seconds and it happened out of no where. I'm guessing the switch might just have a bad connection.
Great list!

I'm curious as to which of these run off of normal batteries and whether it was included in the measurement.

Just looking at a typical AA battery it takes up a good amount of space (about 1/8 the size of a cassette).

I'll be using this list in the future to track down some real marvels in engineering and design.

Thanks!
I believe only 4 models out of 26 smallest walkmans used a single AA battery . All measurements had to include the add on battery case if internal area not built in. Amazing is the WM-10 With battery AND CASSETTE in place so unit expanded still ranked in top 10 smallest.
objection, objection...!

i do own a jj-4, also 2 derivates (kenwood, grundig) - not knowing what makes the sony 701c smaller than a 702 - the sony is definitively smaller:

measuring-method:

take a box filled up with rice-corns right to the top including the sanyo first (straight level on top) and the sony second -

doing that a few times to verify, with the sony in the box you can enter about half a teaspoon more rice...

anyway, they're all winners Smile (...finally a smiley from ME!)
