M70 tape door restore - how to do it ???

hifitom - 2010-06-20 00:35

Hello

Just bought a JVC M70 - bbox itself is in good condition. Only problem is the tape door - it got scratches on it.

I want to restore it and thought about how to do it the best way. Folia? Paint it? ... who did this before?

Thanks
TOM

On the front side, acrylic/plastic/paint polish will work quite nicely.

On the backside, the reason you get that ugly blemishes is because the thumbscrews got loose and allowed the glass to rub on the cassette holder. The silver paint along the top/bottom of the back started to rub off allowing light to penetrate through. Reapply a fresh coat of silver paint to the backside to restore the silvering and the result should look good. Please post the results if you do this.

Thanks Stormin Normin

but how should I clean the door before I paint it? If I take the old color of there might be scratches on the plastic left ....

Tom. I think the scratches you see on the backside aren't really scratches. I think they are spider cracks in the old paint. I would try cleaning off loose old paint using 100% isopropyl alcohol and if that isn't strong enough, use rubbing polishing compound (automobile paint polish) will remove it and polish the glass too at the same time. The problem is to try, not disturb the checkerboard pattern. That will be almost impossible to restore.

Worse comes to worse, I might have one here in better shape than yours. PM me if you mess up your glass and need to find a replacement.

Thanks SN,

and you are right. The scratches are spider cracks. I will try it the way you told me. But I got just one chance, that's the bad thing about it. Hope I will find the right color for it ...

If somebody got a other option to restore this thing, please let me know!

PM to you is sended in a few seconds ...

Is there a way to fill the cracks and then sand and paint?
