FM reception help

docs - 2010-08-14 08:39

Hi,

With 4 bands on this radio all work except for FM reception.
Could anyone point me in the right direction at all please ? I've checked for dry joints as best I can and can't find any problems.
Am I right in thinking that FM is the only band that uses the antenna ? What could be some good checks to troubleshoot please ?

many thanks

Short wave is using the telescopic antenna too
What box is having this problem?

docs....ive had problems with fm as well....if its not staying on station, it usually means the crystals need re-tuning....unless you have all the tech equipment which i never had, yoi`ll have to pay someone......i had my gf 777 done and it cost me 40 quid......best person to talk to is stormin norman............he`s a wizard..............

Thanks davebush, will give that a shot. I think there is a place local that will look at it so I'll have to investigate.

Even with no antenna, FM should still receive strong stations albeit weakly. Also, when the tuner is not in proper alignment, it will not perform well. Stations will come in weakly and not in phase with perceived strength based on tuning meter. Stereo may be captured but off center from the strongest position of the dial. When FM is completely dead however (no reception), it is not an alignment issue. There is a failure in one of the FM stages. This can be in the front end, the FM B+ power supply, the FM RF amplifier, the FM converter, the 3rd FM IF amplifier and the FM detector. If a quick visual scan does not yield anything obvious to you, the repair is likely far beyond the average Joe so you're going to need help from a professional.

I agree, it is too complex for average Joe. It probably is a simple issue but I don't have the ability to troubleshoot it properly... yet.

Dont re-tune coils or variable caps etc.
Usually thats not the problem.
Might be a component most likely.

Agree completely, only thing I had to do was place the string back on track.
I haven't adjusted anything at all as I know that doing that will completely bodge the sync.
All other frequencies work and are accurate as to where the needle is on the tuner waveband so I agree, it is most likely a component in the FM.
