First go out to a good electrical shop and buy some electrical contact cleaner (Servisol Super 10 for instance) which costs around £5 for a can. Switch off and unplug the radio. Lay the whole radio on it's back, take off the volume knob and spray some cleaner into the hole, watching the silver cerrated-edged control inside to make sure the liquid goes into it, around the circular base of it. Put the knob back on, and turn the knob quickly, lock to lock like a car's steering. Do this about 10 times. Plug the radio back in and switch on (make sure you've left the knob in the lowest position!). Operate the radio as usual and turn the volume knob. If some cleaning was in fact what it needed, hopefully doing all of the above will have done the trick.
