Yamaha PC-8

Few quick questions:

When adjusting volume it drops in and out. What is the cause and can it be fixed easily?

When attaching ipod (digital) or walkman (analog) to Phono the quality of the sound diminshes compared to playing through radio. Any way to fix this?

All the tape deck functions work except for Play. It kicks in for a second then dies. Diagnosis anyone?

I intend to take it in for repair and was wondering what sort repair shop should i be looking for? Will any Hi-Fi electrical business look at it???

Cheers in advance

Volume dropping in and out could be a number of things. Start with cleaning the controls. This would be function switches, volume, equalizer, and balance. If this doesn't work then cycle through the functions. Is it the radio only? Or is it all inputs/connections?

Regarding the ipod, your plugging into an input set up to accept a turntable. The Yamaha PC-8 is like a neutered version of the JVC PC-55. They don't give an option for auxiliary input. There are devices available online you can get to run line level output on a phono input. Your best (and cheapest) bet would be a cassette adapter leading to...

The cassette deck is a logic controlled version with pressure switch contacts that get corrosion on them over the years and may need to be cleaned to maintain good connectivity. These are tricky beasts that, if you are not comfortable with, you should not touch. The other issues may be a bad belt or springs. Logic decks are very funny when the slightest thing is off kilter.

Any repair shop that specializes in TV/Audio repair should be able to handle it. I hope you got it cheap because you will pay. Most now days charge a chunky fee just to look at it. The parts aren't expensive. It's the labor.

When a PC-8 is working correctly it is a nice sounding box.

Good Luck! Big Grin

Oldskool gave sound advice.

For the volume problem is it a complete drop out of volume? In other words does it act like the radio is operating only intermittently? Like Oldskool asked does it occur only when using the radio? If this is the behavior then it could be a bad tuning capacitor as this is the behavior they will exhibit.

If you don't have the tools, knowledge and expertise then this type of problem would be best handled by a repair shop. This will no doubt cost a good chunk of change.

I hope you can get it repaired without the aid of an expensive repair shop. Nod Yes

The volume drops out on both radio and phono but if you nudge it and play around with volume slider then the volume eventually kicks back in. Haven't looked inside yet but i'll check it out. How do i clean these controls? Read something a while back about using compressed air!?

I bought it for $50 AUD and it's in pretty good condition but it could be so much better if i knew what i was doing. I want to take this thing out of the house and put it to good use. I'd probably be prepared to pay atleast $150 if i could get nice clean loud beats out of it.

Looking at picking up a Sharp GF-7700 but it chews tapes. Starting to question if it's worth it if i can't get these bad boys up and running myself?!
