M90 line-in question

vladi123456 - 2008-03-03 11:36

Actually, both my M90 and BigBen have this same problem. Tape deck and radio work fine, but when listen to line-in - on both boxes the sound only comes from one speaker.
Would anyone happen to know what the problem might be?

eddy - 2008-03-03 11:44

Did you try to clean the Line in / Phono selection switch on the back panel?

peter.griffin - 2008-03-03 11:48

sometimes it can be as simple as "toggling" the function switch up and down a few times very quickly. That's what worked for mine.

moncheeto - 2008-03-03 12:37

yes mine did the same thing it looks like it needs cleaning in a more deeper way spraying worked good for awhile but non use went back to the same thing so take apart and a good cleaning problem solved Smile

- 2008-03-03 12:39

No idea apart from what has already been sugested vladi.

vladi123456 - 2008-03-03 12:41

Eddy, there's no Line-in/Phono switch in the back - my M90 is of europian flavor, and they don't have line-in - only phono-in, so I'm using a converter. My converter works fine with all the other boxes I have, so I can't blame it.
And as far as toggling switch up and down - I've tried that - and sprayed some contact cleaner on it too. Still no luck though Frown

peter.griffin - 2008-03-03 12:49

Vladi, go with a good FM Transmitter, and no worries about line-in/converter etc...

vladi123456 - 2008-03-03 13:00

I hook up my mp3 player via line-in. Are you saying I can hook it up using the FM transmitter instead? I've never even heard of those before - I guess I'm still living in the 80s Laugh Out Loud

- 2008-03-03 13:01

im sure your m90 has line in vladi if its the one i sold u it has a switch from phono to line in, i could be rong though, as peter sugested get an fm tranny you can get one for a couple of $$ works just as good.

vladi123456 - 2008-03-03 13:11

Tim, oddly enough - europian boxes don't seem to have line-in - only phono-in. Inlcuding your M90. The other M90 I have - it does have a switch in the back. Pretty weird huh?

Ramon, I'm starting to think that might be a good idea - although I was trying to avoid taking it apart - considering my record - it's also a good idea to not allow me near an open boombox Big Grin

peter.griffin - 2008-03-03 13:11

something like this vladi.
The secret is to find a very "weak" fm signal on your stereo, then tune the transmitter to that channel. Looks like this one does it automatically. I have an older one, and I can play music through all 3 floors of my house, off my laptopSmile With the Ipod, I have to have it closer to the boombox.

Here's some other suggestions

Wow, thank you - much appreciated! Those FM transmitters are great!! Especially since I can stream music from my laptop Big Grin

redbenjoe - 2008-03-05 11:27

look at the rear view of the m90 that rimmer has posted in the sale forum today -- it does have that slide switch ??!!
so vladi - you must have some RARE $$$$ one-off prototype Smile

vladi123456 - 2008-03-05 17:08

Ya, that is why I don't gamble. They've probably made only one M90 without line-in, and I still managed to get it Laugh Out Loud
Here's the rear view of mine - and speaking of rear views - man, it's getting hot in Texas, and girls at the gym are wearing less and less clothing - there were a few today with hardly anything on - THAT's what I call *rear view* Laugh Out Loud

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-05 17:40

Vladi, you need the DIN to RCA adapter cable to use your line in. That's a European thing, I have a few boxes with the DIN connection but I only have one adapter.

vladi123456 - 2008-03-05 17:57

I have an adapter, but the problem is that the sound only comes from the left speaker. When using that same adapter with other boxes - other boxes work fine. So my non-educated guess is that it needs some contact cleaner somewhere deep inside. Deeper, deeper, yes! yes!! See what happens when I observe too many hot women in too short period of time Roll Eyes Laugh Out Loud

Oh that will teach me to read the whole thread! Nod Yes

Clean Vladi, Clean!!!! I'm parting out an RC-550 that had a bad headphone jack, even after scraping, sanding and Deoxit the damn thing was still very flaky, never seen a connection that was so difficult. Anyway the point is Deoxit isn't guaranteed to fix it, sometimes you have to physically resurface the parts to get them back to fully functional.

jimski - 2008-03-05 18:05

Yo this one calls for a driptip fix..

vladi123456 - 2008-03-05 18:33

Actually, I really like the *FM transmitter* idea - this way I can just stream the music from my laptop - no more CDs to burn Smile

I can see Vladi walking down the street with his M90 on one shoulder and carrying his laptop in the other hand.

moncheeto - 2008-03-05 19:02

vladi the right hand switch that says phono and din in thats the one you have to spray it may freeze a bit what i mean is once you spray it it may not move until it dries out i try to move the switch with a screwdriver and give it that back and forth movement and have got it to work the same with the sanyo bigben......

Ramon, thank you!! I'll give them two a nice *cleaner* bath and see how that works!! Big Grin

peter.griffin - 2008-03-05 20:11

Yup Vladi, fm transmitter is the way to go. You can blast all your boomboxes at the same time, no wiresSmile

Yep Vladi , this is the only way to go
I get a great range out of my C Crane thingy
Great sound too Eek

eddy - 2008-03-06 11:37

Oh , and Vladi . I think you got the wrong DIN adaptor. There are different kinds.
The pin in the middle is ground. the two pins on one side are line in / or record. The other side of the middle pin is line out
I bet your adaptor is not wired properly
Most likely is the middle pin the ground (always the case) and then one pin on each side from that ground pin is signal
Linky

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-06 12:25

Excellent Eddy, Vladi and I as well as many members can use that information. Smile

vladi123456 - 2008-03-06 12:27

Eddy, how does the sound quality compare between the transmitter and regular line-in? I'm just curious if there any loss of quality with the wireless transmission?

As far as my adapter - it worked fine with other boxes, but not with this particular M90. However, I just gave the phono/din switch a nice contact cleaner shower, and everything works fine now - yeah!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Ramon for your advice!!! Big Grin

eddy - 2008-03-06 12:33

Line in will give the best result
FM transmission frequency range tops at 15000 Hz
Line in of the M90 will top at 20000 HZ or so
But with a transmitter you can take the box outside without hassle /cables
Good to read that you got your line in sorted Cool

peter.griffin - 2008-03-06 12:36

Vladi, the sound depends a lot on the FM quality of the boombox. The M90 has awesome FM Sound so you will get awesome sound through the FM transmitter.

eddy - 2008-03-06 12:41

The main advantage of a transmitter is that you can BLAST off all of your boxes at the same time
My neighbour can confirm this Eek Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

peter.griffin - 2008-03-06 12:43

with my 40 year old ear's, I couldn't hear the differenceSmile Think most adult humans can't really hear above like 16,000khzSmile

peter.griffin - 2008-03-06 12:44

Hey Eddy, do you know if they would ship that crane fm transmitter to Canada?

That is pretty funny about the neighbour!! Laugh Out Loud
Ya, I think I've read about that too - human ear can only hear up 16K or 18K or something like that.

Thanks guys for your help with transmitters - I will definately get me one of those!!

when in doubt allways use plenty contact cleaner, i was under the impression you had allready done this.

vladi123456 - 2008-03-07 18:53

Tim, I got it all wrong - I was spraying the front of it - the FM/AM buttons, tape/radio/phono switch and so on. But I missed the Phono/Din switch in the back. And that was the key - as soon as I sprayed that - it works like a charm. So let me thank you once again for this great boombox - this is my MAIN boombox, and it gets 3-4 hours of use every day Smile

Nicole, I see that women in Holland are much different - women in USA usually listen but don't hear Wink
