Scored a sharp gf777 in the wild!Help with cleaning...

mrdazobee - 2009-03-19 07:45

I was wandering around Blackpool the other day and came across some builders with none other than a sharp gf777 with them.It was pretty beat up but I didn't want to leave it so made them an offer. To my surprise he accepted and thought I was mad to want such a heap of junk. The worse of the problem is paint splatter and blobs of what looks like fibreglass.Any tips on how to get this stuff off?Thanks....By the way I gave him 25 pounds for it...

Paint splatter can be removed if the spots are small enough. It it quite tedious though. If you have larger paint spots, then it gets tricky. There are a couple of products here in the States that help a little in those situations - Orange Glo and Goo Gone. Orange Glo is really a cleaner for wood floors, but the citrus oils in it can work wonders (just don't use too much at a time). Goo Gone is great for removing anything sticky. I'm not sure about the availability of these in the UK. I'm sure a few of our UK members can chime in with more tips.

Only £25? That's a deal!! Congratulations.

you would be surprised how much you can get off with just using soap and hot water.
often emulsion based paint or latex will come off by just using a blow dryer.
a blow dryer should not get too hot.
i mean you cannot use a heat stripper but a blow dryer is extremely unlikely to warp anything as long as you are not holding it directly against the plastic surface.
that stuff that looks like fibreglass may be a littlebit harder to remove.
if it is plastic wood or bondo well that will be hard to get off.
strong solvents are not so good to use they can weaken even melt plastic.
whatever you use you should test first on a small area that dosent show if it discolours the material.

you would also be surprised at how some things work to remove paint.
most of that paint is sticking to a layer of dirt usually.
i have a steam cleaner a small one that plugs into a wall and is used for household cleaning.
i have used it for cleaning paint off of things before and it works excellent.
you would have to take things apart tho so you didnt get steam inside the electronics.
baby oil yes baby oil is good for taking off paint spots on plastic too.
you dont want to put tons on but if you put baby oil on a paint spot on plastic often it will seep under and you can remove the spot easier.
if they are house painters most of the gunk on there is going to be latex paint.
you should be able to get a lot of it off with hot water and soap.

im.out.of.hear - 2009-03-20 10:05

ha ha ha ha brilliant.... Big Grin
yeh its great when a nice surprise comes to u like that, very rare these days..get it mintyfied for summer and get down to the vale,or the park..give em all sumthin to dance about..

EDIT:

I`m Nealy 40 now,i`de look stupid outside with a ghetto, but if i was a bit younger, and i had my own body guard with me,i`de take one of mine out..blast it in the park like i did when i was just a wee 15 year old..actually,i took a box every where i went until i was 22,then age and danger caught up with me..

im.out.of.hear - 2009-03-20 10:25

OH YES,,ABOUT REMOVING SPECS..
I`ve had boxes with specs of gloss paint on em..i got a credit card and scratched the spects off..but thats only on the outer body,,if its on the chrome control panel facia,i think i`de leave it as it is,becuse if you get the specs off, you`ll most probebly take the chrome with it..worse case senario with the outa body, you might have to give it a blow over with some silver..if your a bit of a dab hand at spraying you wont be able to tell its been sprayed..

Thanks so much man. I already found your repair guide. Tape 2 does only PLAY, Tape 1 only FF and the mechanism which moves the head up for playback doesn't come up (only Tape 1). Overall the box is in really decent shape and cleaned with new belts it' should be all good. i just hope the head will move up again as well ..

Thanks for the service manual scan.Do you know how to remove the cassette glass from the tape decks?
