blowing bulbs

transamguy1977 - 2008-09-03 10:12

Im having a problem with the Telefunken Studio m1.
When I got it ,
the original bulbs for the vu and signal meter were blown .
The dial light was good.
So I decided to swap the two burnt ones plus the dial light with leds which looked great.
Well here we are a week later now both the vu and signal meter lights are blown again. Dial light is fine.
What can be causing this and what can I do to prevent this in the future??
I want to fix them again but I dont want them to blow.
I measured the power output to all three of those bulbs before the swap and I had just over 13vdc at all three locations.
I replaced the original bulbs with LEDs from an automotive store which I believe are rated at 12 vdc.
I have done this swap in two other boxes with the same leds with no problems
and the dial led on the Telefunken seems to be fine, and was fine before I replaced it.
Any suggestions????
Thanks in advance

As I recall that box has 3 meters....Are you talking about the ones on the lower right, or the one on the upper left (or is that meter already lit up by the same light that lights the dial?)

transamguy1977 - 2008-09-03 15:32

There are three bulbs total.
one for the VU meters (lower right)
one for the dial (right side of the dial)
and one for the Tuning/battery strength meter (Top left of the dial)..

are you sure its really 12v there? Did you measure it?

transamguy1977 - 2008-09-03 19:33

12 volts where???
I measured all three sets of leads from the radio that attached to the bulbs with my multi meter and got a bit over 13 volts on all three sets of leads.

that is odd.....if they are 12 volt automotive, they should be able to handle well up to 15 volts since the alternator can swing that high.

Maybe best to use bulbs and put green condoms over them???

Unusual for sure.

Im wondering if i am getting a spike in voltage during power off or on.
You know how when you power off a box and you get a little bump through the speakers.
When I get it open again I will have to measure those bulb leads while powering on and off the radio.
Im guessing whatever reason they blew in the first place is the same reason why they blew again.
But i wonder why the dial light seems to stay good and not the others.

Is there a light switch on those things? Or do all of them just stay on all the time?

transamguy1977 - 2008-09-04 08:10

No switch.
All on when powered on (at least while plugged in).
I havent tried it on batteries.

Well mine came with a rechargeable battery installed ( very Dead ) 12 volt 1.5 amp hour
you can also put regular " D " batteries in there as well, either/or.
As I am sure it needs "the" higher than 12 volts, to recharge the battery.
the higher than 12 volt's shouldn't be the cause of your bulb's burning out.

I havn't tried mine on d batteries yet either.

james what we need you to do instead of showing a pic of yours is to take yours apart, check the voltage to the dial lamps,, then then take it all apart and donate the parts for all the members that have an 1m Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud Big Grin

kittmaster - 2008-09-05 12:22

Well the other logical way around this is just use a regular led and put a 680 ohm resistor in series with it to program it around 15mA and that will allow for any voltage transients and give the same results.....albeit a bit of elbow grease.....which you have plenty of.....Wink

Now that is the answer I was looking for!!!!
Not a count of how many views to this post with no response other than nonsense,
Thanks Chris when I get back from Cedia its off to radio Shack I go.

I learned this panel light bulb thing the hard way.
You dont swap bulbs.
If one is burnt out replace all the panel bulbs with new ones.
Its because there not much time left for the other ones anyways and they will burn out very soon.
