VZ-2000 Turntable Problem (surprise, surprise)

gluecifer - 2008-11-22 02:01

Scored one very cheap (about US$35) and expected nothing but the radio to work, to my surprise the tape deck is all working too. The turntable however needed rebelting which I spent most of today doing (and lost my composure more than once in the process) but thanks to many posts I found on here as resources I managed to get her spinning vinyl again.

However that's as far as the love extends. Theres no movement from the 'tone arms'. The other belt on the turntable was still there and tight so I didn't replace it, but perhaps theres something in that mech thats amiss?

When it's running theres a quiet irregular ticking.. like somethings trying to move, but it can't? I thought I'd ask here before taking her apart again as I'd really like to know what I'm looking for instead of bluffing my way through it as per usual.

Thanks brothers.

Was the VZ on a flat surface?
There is a safety switch on the bottom that prevents playing vinyl "on the move"

Thanks for the reply Eddy! Yeah, the switch is fine, and working too as it stops as soon as it's lifted. Thanks for reminding me to check that.

I think the problem is in the string dealy that moves the tone arms.. might be seized. Will see if theres any more suggestions before I have another go.

I'd try taking the belt off the drive mechanism, and ensure the motor spins up when it's supposed to (ie, when putting in a disc and closing the door).

Also, does it spin up when you push the < or > tonearm buttons?

If yes, then possibly the drive mechanism is stuck.

I agree. If all the commands are working, or trying to work, then the mech may just be stuck.
I have had trouble with linear tracking players before and have found that some of them just needed a helping hand to get going again after not running for so long.
Also i found that trying different lubrications on the runner was not the go, would still get stuck. A perfectly dry, clean runner was best.
Goodluck and keep us posted.

Ahh yeah, that's it. It spins up when it should and the buttons try to work. All lights show what they should, and the record spins dependant on the direction and such.

Anything I should look for particularly in there to give a helping hand to? Or just the string?

Thanks for the help brothers!

I managed to get the mech moving again and lo' and behold it plays! Couldn't believe it.

It plays at an inconsistent speed thanks to my hacky belt, but it's working nonetheless! Side B needs a new needle but A plays great.

Thanks for the help brothers. Now I need 2x large sliders, 1x antenna, new belt and new needle and she'll all be 100%.
