Sharp GF-9000 woofers: Black vs White

retro.addict - 2008-10-31 08:13

Hi everyone,

if people have been wondering where I've been, I've had some problems logging in, but it's back to normal now thanks to Gluecifer, who informed Panasonic Fan. The problems I was experiencing were to do with me not remembering the exact address of the email account I used when I signed up for membership on this site (I've had a few email addresses). I needed to click a link which I wasn't able to do. All sorted now. Smile

Thanks Ewan for sending the black woofers. They arrived very quickly and were expertly packed. Nod Yes By the way did you recieve payment Ewan?

As I removed the white woofers from the 9000 and compared them with the black ones, I could tell the black ones were much looser. I could move them about much easier by hand. So, I fitted the black ones in the box and had a look at them from the front of the box. Not very nice, the white woofers look much better! Big Grin I plugged the box in and had a proper detailed listen to them. The black woofers move around a lot more, and the beat of music is more punchier due to the increased movement. The 'punch' is more woofer cone noise than the actual beat if you know what I mean. Everything else sounds pretty much the same as the white woofers, which I was rather disappointed about. The only thing different was the black woofers had less midrange. Bass output was the same, it's there but not THERE. It sounds hollow and lifeless. I wanted to try the black woofers because people who have a GF-9000 with black woofers tend not to complain about the sound. People who have one with white ones moan profusely, like me. I tried improving the sound of the box before Ewan sent me the black woofers, by adding foam insulation - with very little difference. The 9000 is a 'gutless' sounding box. It sounds nice, but the bass is terrible, so cheap sounding that it's pretty horrendous and downright embarrasing when you compare it to how badass the box looks. The black woofers are still in, but I hate the way the box looks with them. I'm going to put the white ones back in sometime.

So there, I've tried all I can at the moment. Smile The GF-9000 certainly isn't a strong sounding performer.

I'm on the lookout for some high end woofers to try out. I don't want any original Sharp ones. They have to be 8 inch, 3 ohms. Where can I look? Big Grin

Yes - rec'd thanks, and good update above..

retro.addict - 2008-10-31 08:34

Thanks, I just wish I could have told you they sound much better, to avoid disappointment on your part. Frown I was certainly disappointed, but thanks for sending them. I don't have to wonder any longer. Smile

Great to have you back in action rocker.

Perhaps you need to involve Daiwa into this discussion as he loves his GF-9000's sound?

I think everyone hears things differently though for the most part, but it is disappointing when a box can walk the walk, but can't talk the talk.. how they (in reverse) say.

Rock On.

I personally think black looks aweome. I don't like how white woofers become brownish over time.

Great to be back thanks to you! Cool

Yes, I'll have to ask r o y a l (R) about his 9000. I like how mine sounds but it doesn't sound as good as I would like. He has some monsters so his 9000 must sound really good if he likes the sound. Nod Yes

And about "disappointing when a box can walk the walk, but can't talk the talk..", yes I agree totally. I love a box that looks awesome, but it has to sound awesome too IMO. Smile

I don't mind so much when they become 'less white', but when they have stains on they look shocking, and especially if the box is a mintballer.

And here are some pics of the GF-9000 with white woofers (mine) and black woofers (geoffhartwell's new one), sorry for nicking the pic, Geoff!

Although the black woofers do look meaner, I think the white woofers suit the design more and look more original to the box, plus they give the 9000 a fresh, bright look. All personal preference though... Smile

Could they be 8 inch ( 4 ohms ) intstead of 3 ohms,-yes less of a current draw by 1 ohm , like in some car speakers ?

Like I Have Been trying Many Speaker's here and many pictures of many speakers fitted in ?

Even a basshead like me can appreciate that there are people out there who aren't that concerned about low end thump from a boombox. I always thought that Sharp boomboxes lacked in the bass dept, but did well for clarity & highs. This topic seems to agree with that.
It all changed with the advent of Sharp's "X-Bass" system, however. Some X-Bass Sharps had a very well balanced sound with a good helping of bass too.

They're definately 3 ohm woofers. I thought this was pretty strange, because most are around 8 ohms.

I'm not sure what you mean by this.
