JVC 838JW- need help finding parts!

stationwagonguy - 2012-10-11 21:20

Hey there!

I'm new to the world of boomboxes... my last one got smashed about a decade ago, can't even remember what it was. It's taken me 10 years to find another one at a garage sale (and I've been looking), and it's this lovely JVC 838JW. That being said, after having taken it apart with a friend more versed in electronics than myself, he's found

1. ALL of the belts for the tape deck have disintegrated into fine powder
2. The volume slider is completely dead on one side- the pot has nothing going through it.

He's cleaned off some contacts, the radio seems to function fine otherwise, but he's said this is beyond his knowledge, and it's certainly beyond mine- but I must bring life back into it again.

That being said, he mentioned the volume slider was a well-known brand part and felt it might still be available somehow somewhere, though I've forgotten the name and he couldn't find a part number on it anyhow. And we're lost on what to do about the belts.

Does anyone here have any suggestions for a place to find belts or another volume slider knob?

The slider may or may not be bad. Try to spray a little deoxit in all the sliders and switches. You have to get cleaner inside of them. Then work each switch or slider back and forth 20-30 times or so. Hopefully this clears it up!!!

Getting Deoxit this weekend, hadn't thought to spray it inside the slider though. Will do!

I have a 838JW, possible parts box, on the way. I will post parts available when I get it and remove those few pieces that I need.

I have the 838 woofers and tweeters if anybody needs.

spoofington, R U shure you wont want to repair your "parts box" ?

My parts box cabinet is, too far gone. I have to sacrifice it, for the good of the team.

I posted it as "parts for sale", let me know what's needed and I'll see if I still have it.

I see U use a JVC 828 in your avatar which is my favorite for midrange quality & overall size.
