PLEASE HELP! mx920 problem just came up today.

blutmadchen - 2013-08-15 10:26

I was sitting on my porch just recording music from my ipod when all of the sudden I started hearing this painfully loud static buzzing sound come and go, but now when I touch the back of the unit, or pick the unit up, it buzzes and the channels are now very uneven and the buzzing sound is becoming more and more persistent ..

I know what it is. Your record bar is dirty. You got to open up and clean it

blutmadchen - 2013-08-15 10:50

Thanks. I am getting some deoxit this friday, or order some if not. That stuff's hard to find even the local electronic store around here sold out

Does sound like a bit of switch cleaning is in order. There's a service manual for the 920 about somewhere on the web for free, makes it a lot easier to work out how to get inside the machine

I downloaded the service manual.

What's a 'record bar' Bill?

baddboybill - 2013-08-15 23:57

Cris record bar is the long switch that gets thrown when record is pressed.

docs - 2013-08-16 06:01

It usually oxidises over time due to lack of use and because the audio goes across this bar it affects the output.

blutmadchen - 2013-08-19 09:21

My facebook friend, James mentioned that it could also be a grounding issue and to take note of where the antenna leads go if it's not the record bar?!?! I'll figure it out. I just got some deoxit d100i liquid with applicator because the store still does not have the d5 spray. I have been studying the service manual like a hawk and I'm definitely optimistic and putting myself up to fixing the issue. I'm going to start working on it today since I have nothing else scheduled, so wish me luck.

northerner - 2013-08-19 09:36

Good luck! I'm sure the switch cleaner will sort it tho

baddboybill - 2013-08-19 09:42

For record bar you can try rubbing alcohol. Best way is to get bar in upward position of long end. Then put small amount alcohol in from top area and work switch 20-30 times. It should fix issues.

Removing the PCB's a real pain in the a$$!!!

It will be behind deck on a board. I've circled with red when back is off of 920. You may be able to get in between without removing. Maybe if you have eye dropper but its on other side of board. Just tilt upward, pour into switch and work the switch pushing in n out.

blutmadchen - 2013-08-19 12:44

I thought that was it! It didn't appear to be too dirty, but of course I cleaned it anyway. thanks!

You can't see dirt and corrosion inside switch though.

blutmadchen - 2013-08-19 12:59

I know. I was able to get up in there with an unused oiling syringe.

Now I just have to figure out where everything plugs back in at then test it out.

baddboybill - 2013-08-19 14:15

You shouldn't have had to unplug anything besides power and antenna wires

blutmadchen - 2013-08-19 15:20

Tested and nothing changed. Still the same problem.

radio.raheem - 2013-08-19 15:31

is it interference from your ipod..tv computer etc...curse me i used the word ipod

baddboybill - 2013-08-19 15:32

Is issue with radio and line in as well? Also if you didn't get enough inside record bar it may not be fully cleaned. I've had to clean some 2-3 times before. Might need to clean all switch especially function and band switch. Could still be bad ground but I somehow doubt it.

blutmadchen - 2013-08-19 15:44

Nope, it does it when the ALC switch is on, or while I'm recording a tape, not necessarily with a device hooked up to line in unless I'm recording from the device. When a device is plugged in, however, sound from the right speaker is good, left weak as s#$%. When I play a tape the speakers reverse.  It buzzes EXTREMELY loud when I move it or touch it when alc or record functions is in use. Radio sounds great. It also burps at me a little bit when I touch the pre amp pcb.

wish i was there much easier to diagnose.....as for the record bar sometimes it takes buckets of detoxit....also do you have an aux selector on the back for aux tape etc....spray that to.......also it would be nice if you can test it on battries to eliminate any power supply issues....this must be pretty sadning for you as the 920 is such a beautiful box....does it hum etc on the radio

so the radio works fine correct....did you spray the right end of the record bar 1 end holds the switches etc...the end you need to spray will actually be on the board....there should be a whole in the bar if your lucky.......lots of it and work the bar about 100 times back and forth vigorously....i had the same prob with my crown 970...it took half the can to fix....also check for loose head connections etc

radio.raheem - 2013-08-19 16:18

is there an alc knob, record level adjust if so take it off and spray buckets in there working the control....basically spray all moving knobs sliders weather they need it or not

baddboybill - 2013-08-19 16:45

Full restoration should be done to get unit performing correctly. When you do partial things eventually something else will happen. Because most units sat for many years in dark dirty moist places and accumulated all the dirt and corrosion. Every switch and pot should be cleaned with deoxit. And only way to do a thorough job is to take each switch and pot apart for cleaning and lubing because sometimes you may have to clean down road again. Do not use lots of spray as suggested because you don't want overspray everywhere. Instead spray small amount and work switch then do over with small amount. Also clean up any over spray.

blutmadchen - 2013-08-19 16:52

I have liquid, not spray.

the spray i use dries in 15 mins anyway....apart from what we have suggested im not sure...it could be caps but i dont think so as it's working on the radio

madam i have never used anything other than spray so im not sure if your stuff is any good for the job.....just buy some off ebay lass

baddboybill - 2013-08-19 17:12

The best is spray but when you don't have spray small amount if rubbing alcohol can be used but may not be effective as spray.

blutmadchen - 2013-08-19 17:12

You mean a thorough disassemble and clean. That sounds like a better option. I'm determined to get it to full health, but I need a break. I'll just kick back, listen to my m9982, blaze up, and chill 'til tomorrow.

The electronics place was ou of stock on the d5 spray, so I got some liquid d100l instead. It's seems a bit too oily.

baddboybill - 2013-08-19 18:21

The oil is for lubrication but you must be careful not to get everywhere and clean up excess.

Sorry, with respect to Reno this is very bad advice indeed.  Only target areas that you know need cleaner spray, use sparingly, use the straw & mop up overspill afterwards.  Loose spray/liquid can be very damaging.

Reno's in the car restoration business, you really don't want to take advice from him

Here's one of his

You could check the wires from the tape head to the board. Sounds like one of them came loose or broke. At least this gives the same symptoms as described.

That's the extremely rare 4 door rally preped Metro 6R4 don't you know

blutmadchen - 2013-08-20 21:34

no, this is serious. I cleaned all connections, nothing changed. All connections to tape head are perfectly in tact. I don't know what else to do. I'll just have to leave it alone and just accept it the way it is... poo.

baddboybill - 2013-08-20 21:53

Can you post video of it so I can hear sound?

blutmadchen - 2013-08-20 22:01

OK but I'm going to have to make a vid with my macbook and i'm not sure the quality of the vid will be good enough to be able to properly diagnose. I'll have to give it a try tomorrow evening.
