I got one of these from the thrift shop today and it's not working. I put batteries in it and absolutely nothing - no lights or any sound. I'd like to get it working but I wonder how hard it is and cost wise to fix. And is it worth it?

northerner - 2013-11-16 00:22

Totally worth it!!

Could be as simple as a blown internal fuse...they're usually little glass jobs so you can see if its blown. New ones are dirt cheap on eBay. I'd check that first and just make sure there aren't any obvious detached wires etc whilst you're there.

After that the next job is to clean ever switch, dial, and socket with switch cleaner...I've had dead boxes resurrected this way.

If these fail report back :-)

Does it work on mains?  It may help troubleshoot the issue if it does work

jen - 2013-11-16 00:36

It didn't come with a power cable. I tried with a computer cord that said 240 volts which fitted the hole. I did get a clunk sound when I turned it on and off. I don't have any cables to fit the power socket. I was thinking if i kept an eye out at the thrift shops I'd probably get a power cord eventually from something from the same era.

I'll take the back off and have a look.

northerner - 2013-11-16 00:48

Don't know where you are so don't know what voltage you're on etc but here in the UK you still buy the figure of 8 leads new

I'm in Australia. Must be 240 as it is set to 240?? I'll see if I can buy one tomorrow. Now I've just got to get the 2 bottom screws out which aren't loosening.

jen - 2013-11-16 01:10

The 2 bottom screws are threaded so i can't get the back off. Does look very dusty at the top.

the 9994 is a cracking box rare to worth saving

jen - 2013-11-16 01:25

Well I got the back off. I don't see any glass fuses. Looks pretty clean actually. I think it is beyond me. I'll put it back together before i wreck it and find someone who can maybe fix it.

wonderful box, get it serviced and you'll love it!

michiel - 2013-11-16 05:46

Yeah, save the box! It sounds awesome! Definetly worth saving! I love mine

I only paid $10 so there is room to move. Will let you know how i go.

I got it working. The cord I have is out of a clock. I have to jingle it a bit. So the radio works But not the tape deck. Is the green light supposed to stay on?

When i was cleaning the inside it had a long thread of black gooey stuff.

Whatever that is?

brutus442 - 2013-11-16 18:46

Great to hear it's alive Jen!

The black gooey stuff is no doubt the remanins of the cassette belt.

Probably why it doesn't work

Thanks Brutus442,

I thought that may be the case. It was around a belt type thing. At least I know it's basically OK. I'll have to get a better power cord as it doesn't work unless i push it a bit.
