My new Marantz From JLF.

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 17:14

I got this rarer than rare Marantz CRS-8000 from JLF. I took it apart today when I got it and repaired the non functional main cassette deck with new belts and cleaned the heads and pinchroller adjusted the speed, replaced the tuner dials three lamps, adjusted the secondary cassette deck and cleaned the play head and pinchroller, repaired the speaker jack plastic housing that was broken, disassembled the speaker cabinets and cleaned out the built up dust.
It is all 100% functional now and sounds great.
It sounds very similar to my PMS-7000 and is quite loud.
This is a Japanese model and the FM tuner only goes from 74MHZ to 92MHZ but the AM band is normal, and it is 100 volts only. It seems to operate just fine on my 120 volt outlets,I checked and it is not getting warm.
Thanks very much Jeff,I'll get all 5 of my Marantz's together for a family shot sometime this week. Big Grin

I agree!

Looking forward to seeing all your Marantz BBX in a family portrait!

BTW... Nice coffee mug! Wink

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 18:02

LOL,thanks. The coffee mug is a vintage 1987 Snapon tools mug I got when I was in Tech school for automechanics back in the day. Big Grin
I'll probably get a family photo tomorrow if I get time. Wink

thafuzz - 2008-12-02 18:08

Congrats Skippy. I had the privilege of seeing and hearing it when Jeff stopped by my house with it. It's a looker alright. It's powerful too. Cool

oldskool69 - 2008-12-02 18:09

Congrats Skippy! Very nice indeed! Nod Yes

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 18:29

It's somewhat difficult to determine from the pictures, but that boombox is HUGE! Congrats on the addition to your Marantz family. Nod Yes Cool

jlf - 2008-12-02 18:56

Id like to know just what is different between this 8000, your 7000, and my 7810.

We already know the speaker cables and how the speakers are powered is different...

Here's my 7810 speaker hook up:

jlf - 2008-12-02 18:58

Oh yeah, and I love how the speaker cap in Marantz boxes look black like that!

Very menacing to all the would be challengers!!! Smile

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 19:36

Yes, the PMS-7000 has a different amp set up than the CRS-7810 and CRS-8000. The main unit has a preamp and the speakers have a built in amp and LED power indicator. Here is the speaker plug on the PMS-7000. The CRS-8000 has a jack just like your CRS-7810.

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 19:37

A better view of the plug and cable. Wink

I sat it beside my SHARP GF-919. Practically the same dimensions. The Marantz may be a bit thicker. Solid built box for sure.

Yes it is pretty big F.D. It measures 31 1/4" wide x 15" high "including handle up" and 5" thick. And it weighs a ton!! Lots of aluminum and steel frame inside. Wink

jlf - 2008-12-02 20:50

Yeah, maybe as heavy as a Conion C-100F even.

It feels like its full of batterys, or maybe even like someone hid a brick inside of it! Smile

Hey, how about I throw up some details shots for comparison?

Do you mind?

Here is the back label from my 7810. Is the 7000 any different?

Id sure like to know 'why' the 7000 is so different from the 7810 and 8000?

Would this photo give any clues? What does the 7000 show here?

redbenjoe - 2008-12-02 21:00

jeff -- dont know what the 8000 reads --
but the 7000 has that identical printing on both the speakers and the center section --and they sounded like the exact same box.

viennasound - 2008-12-02 21:12

Great and solid looking!
Beautiful! Nod Yes

reli - 2008-12-02 21:17

How many watts up in that mofo?

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 21:17

Here is the PMS-7000 tag.

The CRS-8000 "bottom" and the PMS-7000 "Top" together for the first time.

jlf - 2008-12-02 21:21

Well I was wondering because of the massive speaker wire on the 7000 and different connectors, that it is probably more powerful?

Would the Marantz King know? Arkay where are you!?

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 21:22

Back side, notice the larger speaker cables on the PMS-7000 due to the preamp circuit.

No I think they all have about 10 watts per channel. Thats what the woofers say on the back of the magnet on both of my units. Nod Yes

jlf - 2008-12-02 21:31

I wonder if that Japanese text says the same thing as this? Smile

7810

The control center of my 7810

Tweets the same on the 7000, different to the 8000

7810

Mic is a bit different too...

7810

How do the graphs look? I would assume they would be different on your 7000?

7810

Unless they were able to achieve the same 'sound' with different amounts of power between the 7000 and 7810?

7810

Have I crossed the line of 'too much information?' Sorry... I just find this massively interesting! Smile

jlf - 2008-12-02 21:32

Ah! Comparing the photos, all three are different on the control panels!!!

Id like to see some close ups!

EDIT: So if they have the same power, then the larger cord allows great sound reproduction?

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 21:39

I think it's pretty interesting too.
I noticed a few more differences between your CRS-7810 and the PMS-7000.
1. The 7810 has a mpx filter switch and record mute, and an extra mic jack. The 7000 does not.
2. The 7000 has loudness and a mic mixing switch. The 7810 looks like it does not.
3. The 7810 tuner/battery meter looks different.
Big Grin
I'll see if I can get some closeups tomorrow,my wife just went to bed and the PMS-7000 is in the closet in there,I don't dare wake her up.... Mad or I'll be getting a case of PMS from here,LOLOL!!!! Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

redbenjoe - 2008-12-02 21:56

the massive community of s2g wives --whos husbands own marantz 7000s --MUST be awoken for critical matters such as this !! Laugh Out Loud

you guys are right -this is very interesting --

skippy--you are da new marantz man !!

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 21:57

LOLOLOLOL!!! Thanks Ira! Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud Big Grin

skippy1969 - 2008-12-02 22:04

I just noticed this, you can see the amp in the speakers on the PMS-7000 "top" and not in the CRS-8000 "bottom".

redbenjoe - 2008-12-02 22:11

then ---the 8000 may be more desirable --
because .........
remember when we were going to 'pack' the 7000 speakers ??
but we decided that we couldnt --because of the heat from the amp -

well -looks like your 8000 CAN be packed Smile

ghettoboom777 - 2008-12-03 06:43

Hi-Very nice Marantz.
I'll bet their of high quality.
The home units sure are.

I'm hoping that the 15" 3 way home speaker is still at the thrift store today.
I'm getting it for 7.00 if it's still there.
The 15" is torn around the edge but the mid and tweeter are ferro or liquid cooled and it's a nice piece of furniture.
I've always like Marantz-I had a really nice portable tape deck along time ago-sombody stole it from me in 1979'. Mad
It was an Interscope-same make.
Very nice Boombox there-Ghettoboom777. Smile Nod Yes

jlf - 2008-12-03 09:22

Sweet ghettobooom! I hope you grab that Marantz!

Yeah RBJ, I think we may have finally 'arrived.' Although Id still like to ask Arkay a few questions about these things! Smile

My 7810 doesnt have those amps visable though the back of the cabinet either, just like the 8000.

It doesnt have a loudness switch, but how interesting that they called the volume knob, 'loudness/volume'!?

Whats a MPX Filter for anyway?!

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 10:38

jeff --

1. the loudness is electronically built in to the volume control --it has a 'contour' to adjust for low volume.

2. i think MPX is a multiplex circuit for your FM --lots of good home stereo component tuners have that feature

jlf - 2008-12-03 14:33

Sweet knowledge!

Thank you my friend!

Hi Jeff(JLF)That's cool that's my name also!
By the way I did pick up the Marantz Model SP1915.
This thing is huge!! Very heavy.
It's all good except the 15"er is torn around the edges.Need to be re-coned and or re-done.
There is some friction around the voice coil.
Hopefully it can be fixed or I can get another 15"er to put in there.Definately worth the $7.00!!
The mid and tweeter are great.
I got a Aiwa home unit also that is radical.
Need to get an old Marantz boombox like you guys have someday-sweet!
Have a great one-Ghettoboom777. Smile

jlf - 2008-12-04 10:37

Cool!

Id like to see it!

ghettoboom777 - 2008-12-04 22:08

Hi Jeff-Yes I'll take photos of the Marantz speaker and this crazy Aiwa deck that by the way takes 225 watts and is about 50 lbs just the head unit!
Have a great one-Ghettoboom777. Smile
