AX-6. A classic Miro Component design in the era of 90s. Firmware driven full logic control and direct access feature allow desired function within a press of any button.

CX-W700. A wonderful effort from the Hitachi top gun engineers in 1990. It rised the bar of the performance of the boombox equipped with a powerful sub woofer. It also integrated with a superb sounding CD player. The sub woofer was named as 3D ASW (acoustic super woofer). It was nicely styled by the Industrial Designer with a LED to light up the badge.

Anyone interested in a CX200E ? Dont have any more model designation; mail me at steve@pdqsoftware.co.uk... Good working order, just dust added and a few paint spots from careless decorating..

I'm interested, Steve (the email in your message failed, hence the post here).

PM me, thanks

Just an update my friend, did you get the CX-200E?

isolator42 - 2015-03-23 07:23

Hi there H_designer, long time no hear

I do already have a CX-200, however it could do with a replacement centre woofer.

My 7 year old is now using my CX-450... he likes the remote & digital tuner!

I seriously missed the CX-200 / CX-250 and many more ...

What what a great read this thread has been. I can see this is from a few years ago but great to think I have a Hitachi model that was worked on and designed by you H Designer.

I got a really mint one of these a few weeks ago. I think it is beautiful personally, ( a lot would disagree with me) it's very futuristic looking. Would look great in a  very modern apartment.

Here is mine I won it for 5 pounds on ebay but was collection only which was about 8 hour round drive for me if i collected it.

Anyway, the story behind this one is that the man who owned it sadly passed away, and his wife was moving house and she had to sell it. I couldn't take it for 5 pounds, she didn't want me to give her anymore but i gave her 20 pounds and then i paid a friend 25 pounds to collect it for me for his trouble as he lived near by and another 25 for him to post it for me. So it cost me ever 75 pounds in total, but because i know it was treasured by the man it belonged to and the condition, i think it's well worth it.

I hope to get a 3D95 the same but without the CD player so I can team them up. Good sound at low level but once you get past half way it does  fall apart a bit but still love it.

Cheers Taff

Yay, more love for the 3Ds

To be fair, the ASW 3Ds really do have a full, rich sound which is on a par with the Hyper-bass JVCs, & is in the same ball park as the cobra-top Panasonics (just without the same volume capability)...

boomboxtaff - 2015-07-30 03:08

I love my 3d's Isolator. Want a whole load of them like yours :-)

Hi Taff,

Thanks for sharing us the pictures of the CX-W700. This is the 1st time I see such a well kept unit. In fact it is looking much better than my unit that already had a broken antenna. I am feeling Sad to know that the previous owner has passed away. I can imagine he must had a lot of fun with it.

But I am also glad to know that such a good unit is in good hand. This is a model that was mainly designed by my Boss. Wherein my inputs were surrounding the design improvements of the mechanical construction to further enhance the sound quality. It is an important product to me because it gave me opportunity working with my mentor

Do enjoy the music. But I don't understand you concern when turning the volume past half way? I hope the subwoofer is still in good shape.

Cheers! H_Designer

Pretty good all told - how about yourself?

Not much in the way of acquisitions - as I now have all the 3Ds that were sold in Europe. I suspect there are some Japan-only models I don't yet have, however...

I really should get them all out for some pics...

Good to hear that. Me too is fine ... thanks!

You should have some spare units just in case you can't find the parts for repairs. Haha

Pls showing us more pics if you could have time to do it.

Cheers! H_Designer

My experience with much audio equipment of that era (analogue) is that the non-linear nature of the attenuator that is a volume control meant that anything past two-thirds volume made little difference to sound output, & just introduced distortion (this applies to 80s hifi separates as well as boomboxes, etc.). Therefore, most useful volume adjustment was from minimum to about half-way, unless you really fancied maxing-out the (distortion-free) volume to two-thirds.

Also, I have found that any band-pass enclosure boomboxes (like these ASW Hitachis, the Hyper-Bass JVCs, etc.) give a nice deep & rich bass up to a certain volume, & if pushed beyond that the lower frequency sound deteriorates quickly. This is compared to boomers such as the 3D7, 3D8, 3D80/88 (with their extra woofers more simply mounted in the main cabinet), where bass distortion appears to happen more gradually with increasing volume.

It's the price you pay for that deeper, richer bass & it's a good trade off, because most users listen at moderate volumes most of the time.

Those in need of consistently high volumes and deeper bass had to sit & wait for JVC to launch the Kaboom series...

You are welcome my friend. I am still an audio fanatic after I left the job in Hitachi nearly 20 years ago. And I therefore felt that I should start recalling some of the industrial insights and to be shared here.

Hi H Designer. There is no problem going past the half way mark with the volume, but the bass i feel sounds best around the half way volume mark. The bass part is working perfect and i love how the ASW lights up. I should take some pictures indoors with it plugged in. It's a lovely piece of kit and I have been so lucky to get one which is almost like new, it really is in superb condition, i will never sell this unit, because of the history of it and I love it equally as much as the last owner. I really want a mint 3d95 now to go with it and have the pair.

I also still need to clean the speaker grills just haven't got around to doing that bit yet.

Hi, JohnEdward! I know my reply is coming over two and a half years after the fact , but seeing your photographs of your apparently very rare, red-coloured Hitachi TRK-6700H (and found in fine condition!) brought back some quarter-century-plus memories. Not long before my dad (God rest his soul), my brother and I made a very long-distance relocation, my dad sold off some of our non-heirloom belongings, including the boombox my brother and I owned in the bedroom he and I shared (we were teenagers then).

Whatever sense of surprise and frustration my brother and I -- or, perhaps more likely, yours truly -- may have felt from losing that 'box was allayed by the unexpected arrival of a smaller, low-profile (and, yes, red-coloured) boombox. (Sorry, have little idea about the previous unit's make or model, just that it was probably a medium-grey-coloured, mono-speaker-layout, single-cassette-deck, single-shortwave-band boombox ).

The replacement boombox (or "jambox," as some people call those pretty small portable units) was quite low in height, a lot wider than it was tall and may or may not have tuned shortwave (Not sure if it was a one- or two-tape-deck unit and, again, pardon the lack of make-and-model stats; wasn't boombox-crazy or 'box-collecting then ). My brother and I played what I seem to remember was a Lucky Dube audiocassette album on a portable of ours around that time in our lives; maybe that tape was played on that red jambox. I more clearly remember that we played an FM-broadcasted song that I somehow thought had the refrain "Don't force, don't force the feeling / Just relax, don't force it, just relax and let it flow."

Of course I started to realize I was wrong about the song refrain, the inferred song title and how uptempo the song was several years ago when I heard my oldest sister playing that song. It was part of what turned out to be the "Best Of ..." collection of the Eighties-famed synth-funk band Midnight Star. A check of the Internet a while ago today -- including a viewing of the official music video on YouTube -- affirms the song title to be "Don't Rock The Boat." It guest-features the frontman of the rap group Whodini. Furthermore, according to a more recent check of the Wikipedia website, it's a Top Ten R&B charts hit which I assume is from their less-appreciated, self-titled 1988 album.

Anyway, JohnEdward, thanks for sharing the pellucid pix and interesting info' on this fine find of a jambox . Now, if the unit came with at least two shortwave bands and a fine-tuning knob, it'll really be worth a hunting-down -- if the price is right, of course

It is very well built and the stereo wide setting simply sets the speakers as if they were moved far to the sides and a true openness to the sound.  The mid and high's on this model are astounding even against much larger units.  Due to its size the bass

is limited yet at lower volumes quite respectable actually.  I am unsure of its original manufacture date but my guess is 1982 to 1984 ??

This BBX has nearly ALL the features of the best and larger boxes a surprise for a boomer of this size.  The striking deeper RED almost burgundy actually has a metallic mix but hard to catch in a photo see two up close photos.  After days of searching not a single photo of this model in RED or on any forum in any color other than Titanium. It is one amazing sounding machine. Also appears in excellent very well kept unused condition and love the LED meter. The LED meter reads INPUT levels not output of amp. Nice feature especially when using AUX IN.  It even has a LOUDNESS switch. Check out the top controls.   You DEFINITELY do not feel like listening to a small boomer. 20 x 6 x 4 inches. Late last year I networked with somebody "not from here" and bought a Toshiba RT-8780 as that was the model I was looking for and I had it shipped from China for less that $150.00 usd total all included and I received exactly what I bought undamaged from shipping but .... oh well ....

Not yet, it ends on Aug 04, 14:43 GMT.

No bids yet, current price is ¥1 980 ($16.27).

Here is the link to the lot:

http://page22.auctions.yahoo.c...p/auction/l267532740

I am not sure if the seller ships overseas, never check that because I always use a proxy company for buying at Yahoo.JP.

Most probably the seller ships only within Japan as many of them prefer to do.

And another hurdle, AFAIK: without having an account at the Japanese bank you can't directly bid/buy at Yahoo.JP.

So again that leaves only 2 options:

Either a proxy company or a good friend there who is a Japanese resident, for example.

Hi Mystic Traveler,

These products are manufactured in 3 different location in the 90s.

1) CX-20W & CX-3W were produced by Lucky Goldstar (LG), the OEM for Japan market only. LoD is a sub branding of Hitachi in Japan. It means Low Distortion

2) CX-950 was produced in Singapore which was the main plant for world market except Japan. I am too the developer of this model

3) CX-G700 was produced in Yokohama Works Japan, A Karaoke set mainly for Japan market

I am impressed by your findings ... well done

Yes Sir! I worked on the product layout and the aesthetic design of the product. It was collaborated with an OEM from Hong Kong and it was manufactured in China. I have the sketches with me still ... hehe

My brother and played what I seem to remember was a Lucky Dube audiocassette album on a portable of ours around that time in our lives; maybe that tape was played on that red jambox.

Nice product. It is indeed the model of the 80s. I guess it was made in Japan?

I am impressed by your findings ... well done

Many thanks, mate! Very interesting indeed!

And I do like looks of the CX-950 model.

As for Yahoo JP - yeah, I love scouting it once I have time - wonders never cease there.

For the meanwhile another stereo from there:

What does R.O.C. stand for?

Domestic Japanese radio as I assume seeing AC 100V only power.

Yes Sir! I worked on the product layout and the aesthetic design of the product. It was collaborated with an OEM from Hong Kong and it was manufactured in China. I have the sketches with me still ... hehe

Oh, excellent news. I just found one & am eagerly awaiting delivery...

boomboxtaff - 2015-08-07 10:14

I love Hitachi's. Got a super nice one coming my way

percis - 2015-10-06 05:13

Got this cx-450 last week, almost identicle to cx-950 to look at, but sound alot smaller. Still like it

isolator42 - 2015-10-06 05:37

My 8 year old son has been using my CX-450 for a year or two now & he loves it - the digital tuner, CD & using the remote from his bunk bed, etc.

He recently swapped it for a CX-W500 which I also have the remote for. Still got the digital tuner, and the remote volume has better graduation. The remote volume on the CX-450 went too loud too quickly...

Oh, my CX-W400 has been delivered. Needs a bit of work, as I can't get anything from the digital tuner yet. It had the remote though, so that's 3 Hitachi 3Ds with a remote I have now...

percis - 2015-10-06 05:42

Use cx-950 in kitchen but the 450 will find its place soon. Only have manual and remote for 950 not the 450..

hdesigner - 2015-10-06 07:01

CX-450 and CX-950 are sister models. Only CX-950 is equipped with Acoustic Super Woofer (ASW) that similar in concept with the Bose Acoustic Mass System. Therefore, it produces deeper bass compare to its sibling.

isolator42 - 2015-10-06 09:17

So, if anyone has a CX-950 they no longer need - I'm interested...

percis - 2016-01-13 08:58

Hi again, I just got a hold of another cx-950 sadly it has the same problem as my other one, the cd tray keep going out if you try to load an cd, is there any known fix for this, dont think its a laser problem or anything like that, more like sensor thats not working that tells the tray to stay in so the cd can load.

Bought this incase i want to learn from taking apart one to fix the other, but guess its better to ask first So just asking in case anyone knows.

H_designer, I can see you & I are going to be good friends
As mentioned earlier by Beanie Man, I'm the resident Hitachi 3D freak, & you are manna from heaven for the likes of me!

The CX-200 is comparitively rare for a 3D, I think - it was one of the last ones I found.

Mine is currently fully working & my 4 year old son has it in his room - the CD player & tape deck getting daily use, over twenty years on:

I got it from s2g member Radio Raheem, who himself got it in truly shocking condition from a dump. Here's the story:
index.php?board_oid=193392314111653483&content_oid=193392314112105015
It could use a new centre woofer (couldn't quite get all the dirt out!), so I'm on the lookout for another CX-200 as well... or another 3D52 as I think it has the same speakers.

Your involvement in the Hitachi 3Ds interests me greatly.

I have pretty much every model you mentioned, so I own quite a bit of your work

I've owned a 3D7 from new, so I have a soft spot for the '1st generation' 3Ds: 3D2, 3D7, 3D8, 3D9 & the enormous CX-W800.

That said I think the ASWs are the best for sound quality. I have a Demo CD for the CX-W700:

..& the boomer to match, of course

If I might pick you brains?  I have a couple of questions for you:

- Can you confirm that in Hitachi 3D names, suffixing a 5 or 50 meant a digital tuner? (such as 3D45 = a 3D40 with a digital tuner & CX-W750 = CX-W700 with a digital tuner)

- Who are/were Lo-D? Were they a Japan only brand for Hitachi?

- My Hitachi 3D with a CD & ASW is the CX-W700 (similar to the 3D90, but with a CD), but what is the CX-W950?

My 3D collection is up to 19, but I'm still missing:

- CX-CD5 Japan only (I think) 3D5 with a CD player. Never seen one, just pics on the web. Rarer than rocking horse poo, it seems.

  - CX-W300 (never even seen a pic, but it's on some lists online)

  - CX-W400 (only ever seen a pic)

  - CX-450 (seen once on eBay, & missed it! Only want it if it definitely has an extra woofer in there somewhere)

My search continues...

My 'qualifying rules': it must be Hitachi, a portable (take batteries), have at least one extra amplified woofer.

...one other thing: You mention the CX-250. A CX-200 with a digital tuner? Oh, yes please

imageimageI do not know if it is still off interest,

but here are 2 photos of the cx-w300. It does not

feature an active subwoofer, but a base boost, which

is nothing more than a loudness switch.

Best regards

Helmar

isolator42 - 2016-02-10 05:19

Ah, thanks for the info Helmar. Looks like the CX-W300 is off the list

boomboxtaff - 2016-02-10 06:50

I Agree, not a 3D model.

big.john - 2016-05-07 06:47

I have a Hitachi CX-W700 but the CD no longer works, any chance of a replacement laser unit?, everything else on it works fine, does anyone know the laser unit model number?
