andyboombox - 2013-06-03 02:55

well guys, after an 18 year wait,i finally have my panasonic rx ct990.heres a representative pic of what one of these monsters looks like

021220112116-1was in bradford west yorkshire when a mate and me called into a little second hand shop crammed full of old electricals, and my honey was sat high up on a shelf-looking battered and abused but i didnt care and still dont.....i paid my money and left a happy bunny indeed.

quick review?WHY NOT!!!!

looks.....great for a 90s box, lets not forget that it has no cd,which is great,so is the last of the true, none cd boxesbig and austentatious, just how we like them!

quality of build.....awesome.everything seems well appointed and made, and works well on mine and on the model as a whole, and hell, its heavy too10 d cells if you want to take it for a walk and your into silly weight figures!!!!

how about the sound?well heres the thing.....ive heard nothing like itthe depth of bass is like nothing ive ever heard before,so please move over m90,m70 and gf777.youve not heard bass till youve heard this baby

i thought a kaboom was good, but not as good as the ct990!

so everyone else with this or the dt680 feel free to share your comments etc as i know the 680 was very similar in the power and looks stakes!but over all saturday was a very happy day for me and im still tripping on happiness now

yep tim lad she is battered and bruised but she plays really great.to be fair by the 90s the big boys like sharp, toshiba, jvc and sanyo had all lost thier mojo when it came to potables but panasonic were the only ones that kept the true portable quality feel, well into the 90s,and i always remained loyal to them with my portables of both boombox and walkman varietiesi forgot you had some boxed 90s pannys,i remember seeing a boxed dt707 while i was down there with azz and phil and was tempted by it but i know your fond of your boxed pannies.....hope your boyhood box is still going great guns too old lad(smily face)

Well now Andy to find such a top line box and just happen upon it as you did are the stories we love to hear.  Not to mention you have been after her for nearly 2 decades. BRAVO.   Am unsure of the difference between the CT and the DS series but they are very similar and I must second your statement on the bass and overall sound.  I have the RX-DS650 with the rare Analog FM tuning indicator not digital.  Yes it has a CD player setting it apart from the more truly classic Radio/Tape only BBX's yet I am glad mine has this feature.   I have heard all the best bbx's at IRA's awesome amazing ceiling to floor and wall after wall of custom shelves.    This series has the closest to audiophile sound of any bbx period for me.   Although its big drawback mine at least just does NOT play really loud... although dont get me wrong it plays plenty strong its not a back yard party box.  But to critically listen even to classical ( gasp a bbx that can  actually play classical and sound excellent doing it ) this box for me has not peers.  The  bass is deep and true , you feel it but it wont pound a floor its just REALISTIC and full!  The voice and mids are crystal clear and defined.  The highs with good boost settings on the EQ especially using the CD are crisp and cymbals have that defined sharp TISH that few bbx's equal.  Interesting that the bass port is actually AROUND the tweeter and unseen which I like greatly for appearance.  You can REALLY feel the air pushing out in front of tweeter!!   At low to mid volume this is THE BOX series to own.

The original ad for the DS650 and its sister 3 boxes calls it true.

NEVER NEVER CALL IT A BOOMBOX !!
