cassettes are alive....

masterblaster84 - 2008-05-25 09:37

Can it be true, Someone is still manufacturing old school boxes?

Mono boxes with twin antennas?
Are these any good? Where are they sold?

tpr - 2008-05-25 11:44

They are distributed in far east and Africa...
imagine the cd/dvd performance in the Sahara area:TOO MUCH DUST.
Also:
The laser device does not work properly in the tropic belt.TOO HUMID.
There is still a big demand for cassette tape recorders.
When I traveled through these countries I saw a lot of cassette tape recorders from China and India.

The "compact cassette" tape is still the most used music storing medium in the world, we are not astonished about the fact that there are still hundreds of factories in china and elsewhere on this planet producing (radio) cassette recorders.
---------------------------------------------
The dead of cassette tapes was declared often.

Nevertheless:
md came and went..(except Japan)
cd is disappearing slowly .......
dvd will be replaced through mp3/mp4

baby.boomer - 2008-05-25 14:28

Why isn't someone from China selling these new old-school units on eBay?!?

Anybody listening?
有人听着?

retro.addict - 2008-05-28 06:47

Well, at least someone's got the right idea. Smile I wouldn't mind finding one and tring it out. If I found one at a bootsale, I'd probably end up buying it mistakably believing it to be an unusual brand of '80s one, they look pretty genuine from what I can see! Cool

daiwa - 2008-05-28 14:02

Hummmm, perhaps the Chinese would be interested in producing my CX4! Roll Eyes

oldskool69 - 2008-05-28 15:51

Well, I know that there are "knock off" 777's out there. If someone convinced a Chinese manufacturer that he could make a mint reproducing say...an M90, they'd be all over it I'm sure. One thing about design patents, at least in this country, is that once it goes a certain number of years or is no longer marketed for "x" amount of consecutive years it's fair game. Heck, I could recreate the Pinto as long as I don't call it a Ford. Most courts react positive when things are out of production for extended years and such. Smile

jlf - 2008-05-28 16:25

Since they are already tooled up and building these boxes... It might not be that far of a stretch for a company to get something we all would run out and buy tomorrow on the market?

They are interesting! Its cool to see something 'old' thats new!

baby.boomer - 2008-05-29 04:18

Here's a picture of a guy taking a picture of a Tecbun.

Wish I could get a Tecbun.

What do you suppose the slot is for? Tape? MD? MP3? Toast?

tpr - 2008-05-29 05:58

actually it`s a tecsun:

found this comment...
The Tecsun BCL-4000 Boom Box

Imagine a radio with all the excitement of the Grundig Satellit 750, but bigger and with a more exciting sound system. Tecsun is making such a radio. This huge dual speaker shortwave radio updates the Tecsun/Eton/Grundig S350. Check out this photo of the Tecsun BCL-4000. A close-up reveals an analog tuning dial, but notice the 5 buttons. Are those presets buttons? Will this radio become available? I don't know, but I do know I want the BCL-4000 even more than I want the Satellit 750. Photo Source is VK5VKA's Receiver and Radio Scanner News.

tpr - 2008-05-29 06:24

and yes there is a picture of the back side:

it looks like a classic camera...

tpr - 2008-05-29 06:27

baby.boomer - 2008-05-29 06:53

Thanks a lot, Jens! As always, you've got the inside scoop. Amazing how you find and know this stuff!

I should have known the name was Tecsun. I actually own a couple of their shortwave radios. As the comments point out, Tecsun makes radios sold as Eton and Grundig here in the U.S. There are sellers from China on eBay selling actual Tecsun versions.

Even though it's not oldschool, I really like this BCL-4000! It does have the shape of a classic camera. Fascinating! I wonder what form of media goes into that slot on the front.

bredgeo - 2008-05-29 07:36

What I do not like with these old style new built Bboxes is the finish... Mainly the chrome, crappy looking... unfortunately.... Frown

masterblaster84 - 2008-05-29 08:01

No doubt most of these Chinese knockoffs are low quality but they are still interesting.

By the way I like the name Tecbun over Tecsun. Big Grin

It's cheap if you buy 5,000 or more units. I'm guessing we couldn't scrape that together if everybody here bought 10 each.

Thanks for this interesting info, Jens.

Too bad they have over-designed the speaker covers on most of these. It cheapens them, IMHO.

And why would you bother putting a 6-band eq on a mono box? How much could it possibly help?

tburick - 2008-12-25 06:55

So the obvious question is how can we get our hands on these?? I'd like to have a few for the novelty if nothing else. Anyone have any friends or business associates in China?

x9moto - 2008-12-25 18:23

this is the most positive step ive seen in ages, give em time folks there new to this!
that one with the discolites looks like they copied the graphics of a discolite, i wonder if they will build the whole thing eventualy!

send them an email suggesting a few models to make you never know. Smile

tburick - 2008-12-26 04:30

If you guys remember, I design and build robots. Some of the robot's parts were manufactured in China. I do not have a contact in China that would be interested in producing BBX's, but I do have some experience with this. I've sent an email to this company offering my assistance. Below is the email that I sent. Wording is a bit funny but I've worked with China manufactures for years and have read many hundreds of emails from Chinese companies. I have a feel for their writing style:

Hello,
I am a business man from the United States. I would like to tell you about a great need in the United States market. If you listen to my idea you will make large money for yourself.

In American popular culture we love old-style BOOMBOXES (portable radio cassette player). Owning an old-style boombox is a great prize for us. There is a very great need for old-style boomboxes but only one company sells them in United States.

Your company manufactures many old-style boomboxes already. A few of the models you manufacture might be good for US market but I am telling you how to make an old-style boombox that Americans will LOVE. Quality is very important so it MUST be good quality. We want quality build and quality sound. Styling is very important also. American style looks EXACTLY like this:

(INSERTED PHOTO OF PANASONIC RX-5350)

For Americans, Panasonic boomboxes are highly prized. We love Panasonic style and Panasonic quality. If you manufacture good quality Panasonic style boombox for American market you will make very large money for yourself.
I have experience in manufacturing electronic products for US market. I am happy to give you my assistance.

Only one company right now manufactures old-style boombox for American market. Their boombox sells in high volume but it is not perfect for Americans. The quality of this radio is not good. Cheap quality and cheap sound. We want something better.

(INSERTED PHOTO OF LASONIC I931)

Company that builds this radio is LASONIC. Americans buy this radio in high volume because it is our only choice. This boombox style looks cheap and looks low quality. This boombox is too light weight and has cheap sound. We want something with BETTER style, BETTER quality, and BETTER sound.

Please contact me if you are interested in making large money from American market.

Best Regards,
Thomas Burick

I hope you`ll get an answer from some factories/companies!

Very interesting wording tburick. I can't help but think of the Ferengi from Star Trek and their pursuit of profit. Smile

jt - 2008-12-26 23:38

Thanks Jens, I like the look of that Aistar!

billpc55 - 2008-12-27 16:02

tecsun makes excellent radios for the price. they are very well made and function quite well.
i own one of them and i do use it fairly often.
i believe tecsun eton and grundig are tied together in some way.

devoltoni - 2009-01-29 09:33

New Shenzhen boombox products here 1 here 2

master.z - 2009-01-30 11:29

Hey, Burick!
LOL, the wording in your letter is spot on! I work for an importing firm and it sounds exactly like the letters I get from companies from China every day! I usually dont write to them in that form off the bat, but once we get a dialog going, I switch it up. Sometimes the letters are so brutal, but we get by.
Good luck.

Peace,
Paul Z.

tburick - 2009-01-30 16:51

Been dealing with Chinese manufacturing plants for years now. I used to try to correct their English...but to no avail. I found it much easier to go with the flow and communicate to them in their own form of English. We affectionately call it "Chinglish" (Chinese + English) Smile

jlf - 2009-01-31 08:24

Awesome letter TB!!!

"HIGH POWER" is a joke ?.
You will fell done if the unit power-up and plays some kind sound. It doesn't have to play loud, the HIGH POWER label would do the job.

ghetto.blaster - 2009-08-18 11:17

bring them back

bigger and better......
come on they can do it.

kballenger53 - 2009-08-18 16:56

Hey Tburick, Chinglish??? Boy, that's a good one!!! That's almost as good as what we had in Jersey back in the day: Spanish + English = Spanglish!!!

But believe it or not Cantonese, which is a Chinese dialect, is a lot easier to speak than Mandarin, which is proper Chinese!!! And as with learning any foreign language: YOU ALWAYS LEARN THE CURSE WORDS FIRST!!!

'NUFF SAID

someguy451 - 2011-05-28 14:26

I know its an old thread, but is there any way to actually get my hands on some of these boomboxes?

GASP! TECSUN! WANT!

Oh, man, I'd love to get one of those. Tecsun makes tricked out little d.s.p radios and the overrated i.m.h.o Grundig S-350 models.
