SZ-5100SL Re-Design...

qman2 - 2008-05-20 11:40

No, I'm sorry! This is not official Wink It's just me!
I'm studying Industrial Design and this term I'm in a Radio project...
I go for a Re-Design of a Crown SZ-5100SL because I simply love it!
I'll try to upload some pictures...I've never done this image-upload-thing before!

So it's all just work in progress, nothing is ready yet!
But feel free to criticize me, all you boombox gurus out there, because I'm new to this scene Smile

qman2 - 2008-05-20 11:45

thafuzz - 2008-05-20 11:55

Looking good so far Nod Yes

ned.209 - 2008-05-20 12:12

its pretty kickin! just needs a red graphic equalizer spectrum display inset into the middle ,just above where the tape deck should be.
the woofers look class. i love the slim design and the sub too. the only thing is though, in reality woofers need air behind them, how much depends on the ts parameters of the particular woofer. so im not sure a design that slim could pull it off though. i wish it could... also, if your walking with a box, carrying it on the end of your hand, your leg will hit off that sub

more pics! bigger pics! (please)

qman2 - 2008-05-20 12:14

qman2 - 2008-05-20 12:15

These ain't the subs Wink these are the mids!

This is the sub:

qman2 - 2008-05-20 12:21

And it's not that slim anyway...Thanks that you like it NED!

I'd love to post them bigger! But the image uploader scales them to that size! Does anybody know a good server that doesn't shrink the images?

masterblaster84 - 2008-05-20 12:23

Nice work so far qman2, I'd like to see where your design goes.

qman2 - 2008-05-20 12:28

This is only the rough shape until now...I'd like to take a big hand on the backside because I think it has been overseen for way too long!

I'm not quite happy with it right now...it's to much of a box, too additive! And there will be grafics on the back as well!

For the frontside I'll try to make 2 variations...one with a complete display panel and one with physical buttons because I think a display of that size will cost too much battery!

tpr - 2008-05-20 12:41

great looking!

try tinypic! to load it up....

shrinkle file size without shrinking picture format size with irfanview

ned.209 - 2008-05-20 13:13

i freaking love the way it leans back on the sub section. your heads in the right place about the batteries also. still, itd be a nice addition, and yet blend into the minimalist gloss sheen. i think the overall front is a little bare, but, the minimalism is beautiful. bit of a paradox.

yah tinypic.com man, full size, about 800px wide is ideal for this site

thafuzz - 2008-05-20 19:18

I totally forgot to welcome you Q. Keep up the great work. Your endevours and creations are greatly appreciative. Thank you for sharing with the family. Keep it going brother. Cool

oldskool69 - 2008-05-20 19:21

Welcome aboard and that is a slick piece there! Nod Yes

ghettoblaster68 - 2008-05-20 22:43

great job! looks to like a very serious solution
to me!

thanks for sharing

cheers

ghetto68

qman2 - 2008-05-20 23:00

Thank you all very much! This really is a great platform! It's not so easy to get good feedback while working on something most of the time!

To test a boombox on a boombox site with so many activity is just extraordinary cool!

And I fear that I'm already into this way too far! Wink

beatbox - 2008-05-20 23:27

Welcome to the site and may I say that your work is a vision a lot of manufacturers could learn from out there.

There have been a couple of attempts at rehashing the Ghettoblaster, but have failed. I am one that believes that a new direction is always welcome, if done right, especially when it involves such beloved items as boomboxes.

Your vision embodies all that is great about the boombox (big speakers, physical presence, cool colours, sound quality?, but most of all the slap in tha face attitude only a true ghettoblaster can posess) and I believe you have demonstrated the only possible way we could or should move forward if we are to take these things into the future, that I have seen. I would love to see how it progresses - keep us updated!

Well done, and thanks a lot for sharing!

retro.addict - 2008-05-21 07:41

That looks very slick! It looks like a flat-screen TV from the side, especially with the woofer on the back, it looks like a stand. With some more features on the front, I'd love to see this one be materialised. Nod Yes

fatdog - 2008-05-21 08:58

Damn, qman, that's awesome! I'd beat down a little old lady in Wal-Mart on Black Friday to get one of those! Laugh Out Loud

ford93 - 2008-05-21 22:15

That is nice qman2 it'll really kick ass if it has touch screen! Cool

Thats exactly what I tought! You just can't take an old boombox and put it back on the market, like lasonic did, with only a few changes...It has to look like a 21th century product! And a really goos redesign will always kick as! When you can see the tradition of the orignal, but not just a quote. You have to see that there have been done some work!

The new MINI would be a good example...

I hope I can bring that difficult task to a good ending Wink

And thanks for all the great answers!

ned.209 - 2008-05-22 07:53

it might just be the way the program rendered the chrome dust caps, but id be curious to see what the subs would look like in place of the woofer style you have on there currently. what program are you using?

qman2 - 2008-05-22 09:30

Sorry NED, I'n not sure if I get your question right...can you ask it again for a stupid german Wink

I'm using Rhino and 3dsmax for modelling and maxwell or vray for rendering...those pics are rendered with maxwell

fatdog - 2008-05-22 10:25

I think Ned would like to see the front speakers replaced with the subwoofer style.

qman2 - 2008-05-24 04:45

I also like the the subwoofer style...But I think for mid-speakers, you need to have some kind of cap on the magnet...Correct me if I'm wrong!

But I don't like the chrome caps any more! I think I'll replace them with simple black ones...or maybe green.

- 2008-05-29 22:52

qman2 - good job, I'm a ID student at the UW, graduating in two weeks. Where are you studying at and what year are you?

I have also started a boombox redesign. I've just started ideation and research.

Do you have pics of any of your sketches?

ned.209 - 2008-05-30 11:37

hey there Dro. ideation. what a fantastic word. you got any sketches?

Qman, nahhhh, i dont think it needs dustcaps, check this one out

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2007/08/dba_xpd171_ipod_ghetto_blaster.html

dont think it got released tho, damn!

ned.209 - 2008-05-30 11:46

be nice to toy around with the idea of creating a two piece mold for one of these designs. the speakers etc... ... waagh im hungover...

i know what amp to use, and the math for the acoustics of the case is possible. you could prettymuch forget about any fancy buttons doing anything tho, it'd just be a simple ipod amp, a really good looking one

be interesting to frikkin sell the things

qman2 - 2008-06-02 04:26

Hi Dro! So you've also found this place during research? Pretty cool! So I got serious competition here Wink
I'm studying in Munich in 4th term now. And I don't have any real sketches yet. I'm not a big painter unfortunately. I found it very hard to produce good sketches within a box, because it doesn't really have a shape! But it would be great if you would post some sketches here. I bet I can learn something!!!

And ok, NED! I'll make a version without dustcaps just for you...

ned.209 - 2008-06-02 11:45

thanks Qman

- 2008-06-09 01:09

qman, I really like your shape but it seems to be more of a display piece for the home, I couldn't see myself bringing that to the park.

ned, we'll see if I can get some sketches done as it is my final week of college and I'm busy with that and a trip to japan. so far all I have are 2 minute sketches done at 3 am, haha.

ned.209 - 2008-06-09 06:42

we got some competition up in this biatch. your gonna have to do pretty good to beat Qmans design Dro, frankly i was taken aback by it

qman2 - 2008-07-04 05:42

It's time for some update here...

On Tuesday there was the final presentation for the radios. Although I didn't really came as far as I wanted, this is what I presented of my boombox:

http://quirin.kaduz.de/boombox/presentation.html

click on the images to enlarge (the quality isn't that good though for faster loading times)

I changed the whole body shape again...I hope you like the new one!

Oh and Ned! Thanks for your great feedback, it's so cool that you like it so much!!! (I had to look up what "taken aback" means Wink Thats why I didn't really replied on that post!

oldskool69 - 2008-07-05 01:39

Not bad. There is a Kicker ipod boombox (dock box) similar to this on the market now as we speak. Smile

monolithic - 2008-07-05 17:07

That's highly impressive, man! Cool

Put a handle on that thing and I'd cop it! Wink

qman2 - 2008-07-06 00:54

Hmmm...I haven't really found what you mean. At least I'm not sure. Can you post a link? That would be great.

And yeah, I still haven't a good solution for a handle in mind, that's why I just skipped it. But I'm trying very hard...

If it's intended to be a portable unit, you're gonna need some way to carry it. Confused

javier - 2008-07-06 16:14

the new redesigned tape with sd memory looks totally awesome you can really download tons of songs and just put it in any boombox.. GREARRRTTTT.. Nod Yes

I have to make sure, that you guys don't think that this is my idea...

http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/a512/

I've just made it fit to the design of my boombox! I also admire this idea!

And you're right, I still need this damn handle! But I'm definitely going to make one!

Thanks for the link...I wasn't sure if you mean this one. Except the general idea about music coming out of a box shaped stereo system Wink I think mine is totally different! It's definitely not for iPod and I never really liked the look of those future styled boomboxes.
In my opinion a boombox needs 90° ankles, otherwise it ain't a real boombox...

I undestand what you mean. I was referring more to the execution than the finished product with the sub in the rear being the most notable part. Smile

qman2 - 2008-07-11 08:02

Yes your right! The centered subwoofer on the backside really is a common thing! I was pretty sure that I might be the first one having this idea but it seems like I'm not Wink

Thanks for showing me, I really have overseen this on my research!
