*TPR*:

congrats Pepino for the first one!

pepino - 2008-02-29 17:34

OK GUYS, HERE GOES MY FEEBLE ATTEMPT AT REVIEWING THE I931.first of all this is my first time looking at the round box,i only own the square version.great packaging.im comparing to the old trc-931.lighter in weight.smaller by a bit not as imtimidating looking.to me it has the feeling of an egg, even thou its big.its nice looking, and good to see a bbx come out of the box new for a change.OK,WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!!!THE SOUND.compared to the trc 931 no comparrison, the trc has more bass and better sound than the i931.sorry fellas, but thats my honest opinion.we were short changed in the sound department.i do like the concealment of the ipod goes in like a cassette.i am going to say its an expensive novelty bbx.but lets hope for more improvements and more companies going for it.tforgive me this is my first review maybe someone else will be able to elaborate better than i can.

masterblaster84 - 2008-02-29 18:06

Thanks for the brief review pepino. I'm not surprised by your review, in fact it's exactly what I expected to hear. With a few more reviews I think we will all have a great feel for what this box really is.

retro - 2008-02-29 18:10

Definitely a step in the right direction, thanks for the info and pics Pepino.

pepino - 2008-02-29 19:08

ha, my son wants its! so he can take it to school with his ipod.the tradition continues............

monolithic - 2008-02-29 20:16

Maybe you need to fiddle with the bass & treble controls and sound processors of the Lasonic to make it sound better...

Also, the sound of the box partially depends on how you've got the iPod's sound set up...

jovie - 2008-02-29 21:00

pepino-can you tell if the tweeters are putting out anything? Also does the i931 look easy to open up from the back?

transamguy1977 - 2008-02-29 22:24

Dang!!!
Congrats ,
How you get one so fast??

If the i931 is using the data port on the ipod it should operate like a standard line out with all frequencies being flat and the output balanced. Therein may be the problem, but Pep did not mention loudness and sound as it related to the FM section. This may provide more insight if we break it down a little further. If it DOES allow bass and treble control from the ipod versus preset eq settings I'd like to know. Looks like a bit more investigation is in order here. Tap Toes Smile

monolithic - 2008-02-29 22:59

The iPod's EQ,... I've never used it in a line out configuration so I wouldn't know if it works or not... Besides, I keep the EQ off 99% of the time, but maybe other people use those presets. If so, it could drastically change the sound.

I Agree More people have to get their hands on this box... I prolly won't get mine for another 2 weeks 'cause I've got another Lasonic to get! Wink

Still, I suspect that the sound is a bit better than what he's sayin'... He just hasn't had the time to really play around with it yet.

it does have a loudness button and u can adjust the bass and treble.or u can use pre set eq.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of that sound inferiority came from the iPod. MP3 sound, which is what usually comes out of an iPod, is compressed and lacking a lot of what a good cassette could carry.

A better test would be to use an iPod with recordings done in FLAC lossless compression. This is virtually identical to what is on a CD. Unfortunately, this can only be done with the MAC (NOT PC) iPod software, so none of us using PCs could take advantage of this better sound quality from an iPod. Maybe a MacIntosh owner who can do FLAC recordings could try out the box and let us know if it makes a difference?

In general, I wouldn't expect anything made today to sound as good as something made years ago, unless it were substantially more expensive than the norm. The new Lasonic, especially if you adjust for inflation, is actually CHEAPER than the old boomboxes were. Shouldn't expect much from it, I think.

Looking at those pics, it's probably even a bit nicer than I expected it to be. It seems comparable to the older Lasonics, but not up to the standards of the best boxes (like peak-era JVCs). Didn't expect it to be, anyway.

Thanks for the review and the pics, Pepino. Congratulations on the new acquisition, and I hope it "grows on you" so you feel it was worth getting. Look forward to reading more reviews. Hope one day they make a really GOOD quality boombox-style iPod station!

There are many media players that can play FLAC files on Windows machines.

tpr - 2008-03-03 11:25

The Lasonic web site referred that it is available in march, nevertheless:they have to ship the containers from overseas, from the "YUNG FU ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES"Taiwan. Since we had stormy weather currently - the i931 units might still be on the
vessels... Big Grin

tpr - 2008-03-03 11:37

hopefully it doesn`t end like this....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE_ri8PkihE

peter.griffin - 2008-03-03 11:51

Hey TPR, is that for the orders that they just processed? Or for future orders? Mine was shipped on the 28th, and they gave me a ups tracking number the same day. And Pepino got his in like one day.

tpr - 2008-03-03 12:13

No idea- I guess there will be enough units for all! Big Grin

The vessel is approaching...

peter.griffin - 2008-03-03 12:25

haha, wuhooSmile I think mine is coming from Truck or train, since I'm in Canada, and the order is coming from the statesSmile

jovie - 2008-03-03 21:52

I'd really like the experience of going into a store and seeing it on the shelf. It would be great to see if this would feel the same as it did years ago.Unfortunately, there's not any retailers I know of that sell Lasonic in my area,at least not that I'm aware of.Purchasing online really makes the buying experience a non-event.For example,Imagine ordering a car online and having it delivered to your driveway.I'd much rather have the dealer experience.I have some really fond memories of shops displaying and selling boomboxes back in the day.Seeing the demos all lined up and trying things out before you buy is always an unforgettable experience.Wouldn't it be great to see the new lasonic and NEC side by side in a store, buying one,and walking out with it?

tpr - 2008-03-04 02:22

True said Jovie!-what an experience to buy it live...

As we can see on their web site the unit is already available in Asia.

You´ll find it if ya search under "NEW PRODUCTS".

tpr - 2008-03-04 02:37

so it says:30-45 days : that might be the delivering time the entire logistic needs to ship them and to bring them into the shop displays...

peter.griffin - 2008-03-04 05:36

That's really strange, cause the first "initial" batch came from their Arizona location?

Peppino got his from California. He lives in Arizona. I just got mine last night as it takes a few more days to get to Georgia.

tpr - 2008-03-04 06:31

Congrats DKD, the second member as an i931 owner...!
