Bose boombox?

isolator42 - 2008-11-20 04:07

Batteries, a handle, iPod dock & aux-in, but is it a boombox?
http://www.bose.co.uk/GB/en/landing-pages/sounddock-portable/

...I'll tell you what it isn't: "a bargain"
three hundred sovs? Have a day off...
Especially as the AC only one is now half that price.

My folks have one of these, honestly , it's the first time in my life that I have ever wanted to smash their faces off . . .

retro.addict - 2008-11-20 06:40

I don't like these iPod docks. They're on display in my local HMV store. They look pathetic IMO. Nod Yes

Stick the ipod and there docks in the bin they are total C R A P im suprized they have a liscanse to sell this rubbish.

jovie - 2008-11-20 17:28

No radio reception so it's not a boombox.Bose products have always been overpriced gimmickry. They have taken my money before but never again!

As I've said before, the Ikicker is the best docking station out there. However, you must use its aux in with a 10 band graphic equalizer to boost the mids and highs (not exactly a portable configuration Roll Eyes ) .Only then will you experience its true potential which is nothing short of amazing!

billpc55 - 2008-11-20 22:07

i dont get it. ok i understand it takes up very little space and its easy, but for the price of that one unit i have three amazing vintage stereos and speakers that literally blow the doors off of any docking station. i mean not even on the same street. i cant really see it sounding any better than a high end vintage boomer. in fact i am betting it would sound worse.
it maybe nice for someone who is just looking for something easy and nice sounding. i just dont see it generating any really big sound tho.
allthough the ipod has really caught on any true hifi device for listening to them has seemed to not come about.
one model after the other is paraded out desperately hoping for a winner.
the lasonic was a pretty nice atempt at a cool ipod dock but it wasnt quite hi quality enough, but it was cheap.
funny you know despite this slew of hitech sqaure black things they throw out at us there is a growing ammount of people that are seeing through the lcd displays and wifi blue tooth jargon.
i am not against everything new.
i just could never head out and spend that much money on something that i know would gather dust in a corner in a few months. i am pretty sure putting a hi end boomer up against that bose whatever it is would really embarass bose.
plus being able to listen to the radio is a big bonus on a nice boombox.

billpc55 - 2008-11-20 22:09

also what kind of real stereo seperation are you going to get on something that has the speakers less than a foot aways from eachother. i dunno i am sure bose can gobledygook explain it on their webpage but i am not buying it.
i heard a wave radio recently for the first time and laughed at the owner when i told him my kaboom was better than it in about every way.

peter.griffin - 2008-11-21 05:19

I hear yeah Bill. I don't care if it sounds better then a audiophile home stereo, it's butt uglySmile

You know the funniest thing is, most people that are throwing away boomboxs don't even realize you can hookup your ipod to the line-in? Crazy.

I'm guessing you haven't had much luck with them, Tim?
In my experience, if used correctly (high bps mp3s, & the EQ always off) iPods are a decent enough, clean sound source. No, the audio is not up to the standard of a good CD player, but for non critical listening (headphones on the train, in-car & yes, boomboxes) they do the job just fine IMHO.
The convenience of having my entire CD collection always on hand (plus, books, games, tv shows, films & podcasts) is a very big plus. I also find iTunes an intuitive piece of software with far fewer annoyances than an equivalently complicated piece of PC software.
For example, when I buy a new CD, I feed it to my laptop & click *one* button. Then I plug the iPod into the laptop (pressing no buttons at all) the album is loaded on, track names, album art, the lot.
So there is all of this astonishing convenience, & if I do need a HiFi fix, I can still listen to my new CD in my home system.
I'm having trouble finding a downside... IMHO, of course Smile

This is for people looking for a "solution" (ugh) for playing music from their iPod out loud. It does sound pretty good, it's got a posh brand & a remote. This is enough to please many.
One of the reasons you can pick up top-choice HiFi so cheaply 2nd-hand is that hoards of people are hoofing out their big old "seperates system" in favour of one of these.
Their sonic loss, is your gain Smile

daiwa - 2008-11-21 07:32

We sell these in our Apple Store. I'm no fan of mp3 format in general, but for what they are, they work OK (for light listening in kitchen or office), and are surprisingly loud.

A better choice Roll Eyes is this extended egg, especially if you're an overpaid executive with money to burn, what I call the extended egg format: the Zepplin... ... they might be better served to "re-box" their music... Razz

We stock after hours and crank all these players to test them out, next time I do I'll take my big Lasonic 935 in and blow it away!

peter.griffin - 2008-11-21 08:03

Dave, your a professor and you work in a apple store? When you do have time to play in a band, and collect boomboxes?Smile

yes i am shocked at what people cannot figure out on their own.
i mean a eighth inch to rca cable freaks most people out to the point of nausea when you show one to them. so thats what i need to use my ipod with......
i think some people still think less is more but in terms of this thing.
less is less for more money Smile

yes you are right. tho it is strange how posh has now come to mean a black plastic rectangle for most people.
i mean everything looks like the monolith in 2001 now.

Hey there P.G., fact is, the economy is even killing the private colleges right now. Enrollment is down. Normally, when the economy gets bad, people go back to school to improve their skills...

I originally got the Apple job to supplement my teaching gig, but my school had only one class for me this term. Monday, I'm interviewing at one of the biggest, classiest clubs in Denver for a marketing position. Wish me luck!

Now that I'm single, BBX collecting and rack gear is on a buying freeze. I got the new 3G iphone, and that about busted me! But it's super cool. Haven't bought a box since my deal on that little Sears box from Reli.
