Thodio Ibox - The Ultimate Boombox

retro - 2012-03-19 09:55

Finally, a high end iPod dock I would actually consider purchasing. Click here for pricing, models and specifications.

not for me

that style is too homebrew
actually make that Special Brew

jesus my eyes hurt -
Imagine getting a splinter from that lunchbox? Or a gopher making a home in that bass  port

chris69 - 2012-03-19 11:38

Wow! Usually i wouldn't go for any of the newer stuff but i actually like this

If that is real wood, the sound must be awesome

It's made of MDF and rated at 70 watts per channel, but also a bit pricey.

reli - 2012-03-19 12:28

I like it, but for that price it should come with speaker grills...

And the port should be a little more aerodynamically tuned, not just a straight hole...

Not bad but cheap coaxial car speakers and bass reflex instead of sealed are not really a audiophile's dream.I saw on this forum home made boxes that had better components and looked decent.

I would prefer the tdk pod for many reasons. Ok, the TDK has the same coax which says a lot about those too, and it haves that shiny finish that i don-t really like, but at least looks better, have dedicated bass speaker and it-s a sealed box.

isolator42 - 2012-03-23 06:37

Followed the link.

A nice effort, but too expensive. What is it doing that the TDK 3 speaker boombox can't do?

And what it it with naked speaker cones on stuff these days? It was pretty obvious decades ago that the speaker cone is one of the most delicate parts of any audio system. OK, show it off a bit, but no protection at all is silly, IMHO. So much so that if the TDK boomer had grilles, I'd probably have one by now...

It fits with the whole "retro/steampunk" trend that's going on these days

macflyer - 2012-03-23 11:31

don't like the design. As Claret points out: too homebrew....

I actually like my skullcandy vandal for what it is: a decent sounding dock.....better than 90% of what's out there....and act. very cheap right now....

looks very well built like it could deliver true sound, but to me it looks like an owl

isolator42 - 2012-03-23 13:21

I like the way the TDK boombox looks like an evolution of the old Beosystem10...

now that you mention it.....'re rite....

sonic qualities undisputed, it still looks more a Popular Electronics kit...well, those kits were great I guess....

I reviewed this here:

Had it quite a while now, still no problems.

Use it ALL the time.

"What can this do that tdk boombox cant do"

Answer: play 5x louder and cleaner and never needs batteries

isolator42 - 2012-07-12 10:50

Fair comment, well made

Are those tweeters moveable?

claret.badger - 2012-07-12 10:54

It's a worry that you have a mental image of this for comparison...

driptip - 2012-07-12 20:13

sorry retro but, it could be 1mega watts per channel , not an 80's box,

looks like a shoe shine box.

retro - 2012-07-12 20:30

Really? Check out the finish and the Focal drivers on this model, I still like it and I swear that I'm not getting paid to promote it.

They look better than M70's and M90's in my opinion

I think the bass port needs work, though.  Way too big, doesn't look tuned, and looks silly in white.  Make it black instead.

It looks like a shocked owl.
