From Gramophone to iphone !

deech - 2013-04-19 02:55

Well as of late I m in the process to present

a new exhibition along with the '' Walls of sound''

and i d like some info on some essential machines that

were milestones in between !

I m going to present the evolution of radiophone

and magnetophone , cassete tape recorders etc and

display some of them along with stories, the benefits , advantages and disadvantages of each era .

Now any help and suggestions would be appreciated

That gramophone is flipping beautiful deech.....thanks mate...we all know what most think of the ipod

What about a "music centre" Deech, i remember my Dad having one in the 70's.

I think these style units were the first to contain record player, tape and radio all in one.

Tough to choose but the reel to reel really ushered in home recording and triggered the 8 track, cassette tape revolution.

My father still has his Teac unit.....

extremely interesting exhibition. how are you planning to structure it? there are simply too many media between the first and the last one. since it's very likely that you won't find a sample of each of them -- i mean, besides gramophone & ipod  -- i suggest

that you fill the gaps by means of pics, videos, scenes from movies, posters (ads and the like). this would provide variety with the maximum of economy. i wouldn't necessarily go for the chronological order of display, but this of course is a matter of taste. however i would think of an ambient music project, so to speak: a soundtrack where old genres meet new ones, played by different medias. as for info, there's a huge bibliography on the subject, but i guess that you can find the basics already on s2go. just use the search function by typing the keywords you are looking for, then pm those who posted relevant info on the subject. keep us updated on further developments

I came across this during wandering on the net:

Magnetic Recording on Steel wires.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_recording

Saw one recorder for sale somewhere!

andyboombox - 2013-04-22 02:39

now this is my kinda thing nowadays!nevertheless id rather have the gramophone than the i phone all day long, for sure!just love the pic of the akai reel to reel, looks like the 4000DS,had one a short time ago that i sadly couldnt resurrect, and as i was only just developing my interest in that kind of thing i didnt hang on to itas for the music centres bison, ive had several recently, including examples from sony, panasonic and waltham.its just something about seventies hifi that gets me going nowadays

andyboombox - 2013-04-22 02:40

Thank you for your suggestions !!

This exhibit is going to be more on the educative side

and the machines are going to be displayed if possible

ofcourse like in a museum !

I have to say that i can find some of the machines you guys

suggested and if i wont find i was thinking about what samovar said.

To fill in the gaps with advertisements , posters, movies etc.

AE the magnetic recording on steel wires is an interesting add

but i dont think i can find one !!

Andy the 70s are going to be highlighted at the exhibit because imo

this is the decade when the real revolution in terms of sound really started

(even the boomboxes first appeared in the 70s)

Brutus the R2R ofcourse is going to be displaayed too.

Mitchell and Bison a music center is an easy one to find and RadioRaheeem

the gramophone i think is a toughest find as this machine is now so expensive

(but cant start the exhibition without one).

I was thinking to even put some headphones in front of each machine so that the visitors can hear the likes in music from the different eras .

This is an ambitious project and needs a lot of  research but hopefully i can manage to get this going in a couple of months .

I d need some more ideas  please !!!!
