Im surprised HP is suppose to be top notch and nice looking too...if its under warranty id continue to look into that....Now i'm on my second dell laptop.. my first one i've had it since 2002 a bit outdated but i still got it keeps on ticking!!...so i would recommend them and they always got deals too...second choice would be acer not bad especially if your on a tighter budget....hope this helps... Smile

We sell a lot of Acer - no problems to speak of.
Reasonably priced and reliable, good features and quite a range to choose from.

Toshiba have been pretty OK, Sony higher price bracket, beautiful machines with superb screens and top performance, but in our experience the worst reliability. Of course opinions and experiences vary wildly and a small sampling of the market is hardly conclusive but there are reliability 'trends' that become obvious when you offer sales and service even in a small store.

Apple's are pricey but they last. I'm still using a 2000 Powerbook as my main home computer.

Best bet is to buy a Dell, Lenovo, Sony or Panasonic with intel chipset, the problem with the HP, Toshiba, Acer, Gateway, and apple new macbook and macbook pro the ones with nvidia chipset and with the HP dv6000 or dv9000 series is the nvidia chipset overheating then desolding from the motherboard causing you to loose wifi and then black screen of death, it a known issue with these, HP know about it, you have to fight with them to get them to replaced it, Apple unfortunately have the same problem, been tru two macbook pro myseft decided to go with a panasonic toughbook CF-30, no more problem since.

But you can fix it just need a heatgun and aluminum foil, you put the aluminum foil on the rest of the board except the chipset this keep from melting other parts on the motherboard then you heat the chipset for 30-60 seconds then let cool then heat for a few more seconds remove the aluminum foil and reinstall motherboard sure work like new again.

not heard of this issue - Overheating notbooks

My Gateway barely get's warm but then it's a celeron processor an very slow at that, but with a lot of memory - It get's the job done.

It a big problem all company know about his just rather play dumb about the issue, the only company that step up was Apple and dell they replaced the units with new one, Apple sent me a check for the full purchase after giving two bad unit within a year, Apple a good company overall, HP, Dell, Gateway, Toshiba and Apple filed a lawsuit against Nivdia for this problem, "Let Apple and Dell is the only one replacing the defective units", alot of customers don't know about this because they think it something else or given the run around, don't buy a cheap notebook will have more problem then it worth.

Hey Drm2000, I am curious as to why you use a mobile type notebook? I use one for work, we have/had hundreds of them and they hold up VERY well considering some of the conditions we put them into. Of couse, that's what they're designed for. They are pricy too. But I think if you have just one computer--the "tough books" can do pretty much everything and go from home to work, to car, to the cafe, as long as your not a hard-core gamer and need graphics card.
Mine has been rained on, dropped more than once, splashed with mud, gets heated to 120+ degrees routinely in my truck. Get it down to -20 and it takes a few minutes to start up though...
The screen needs the most care if you want to preserve the anti-glare coating for use in direct sun light.

Got it due to I travel alot and needed something that will withstand abuse and extreme heat or cold without problem, and that have onboard GPS and edge modem, extra long life and the laptop needed to be water resistance, this guy is waterproof been tru severe tropical storm and tornadoes with this guy and never giving me a problem, also had it in below -27 degree this thing has a built in heater on the harddrive and in back of the LCD panel, before own a CF-29, which held up pretty good, still works and still look great till this day, only thing is the price will set you back $4600 if you want the touch screen and GPS. even with discounts still paid over $3800 for it.

Won't reccommend this for a normal user as price is very high, and you can get a more powerful notebook for a lot cheaper price just stick to a lenovo, Sony and Dell, if you are not planning on putting it to extreme condition they will hold up, just don't buy the cheapest model, you get what you pay for.

I have a Dell and I'm very happy with it, It is an old one but a good one and very tough construction. I have the Ispiron 5100 with 3 gigs of memory and a 120 gigs of hard drive and it is pretty fast. Dell imho it is very reliable, Got mines from a friend a few years ago. Smile
