2 BBoxes $2.00

lasonic.trc920 - 2009-07-19 13:30

Here are two boomboxes I just picked up at the "Name Your Own Price Store".

This Montgomery Wards "Airline" was pretty filty and I took it apart and cleaned it. Everything works and it has a nice LED meter. But it's missing the antenna, battery cover and tuning knob. But it was only $1.00!

BEFORE & AFTER Clean up.

The Sony needs some work, I have yet to clean it up or test/work on the cassettes but it does power up and the radio works good. More to come on that! Again, only $1.00

Thanks man, Its fun to collect, clean up and then BLAST! I'll be working on the Sony later this week. Nice work on finding 5 today! They had a small round Sony at the name your own price store, but I just don't care for those, if it's there next week, I may grap it, we'll see!

Bargain! I really like the clean lines on that Montgomery Ward box!

Believe it or not, that little Montgomery Ward box sounds good and has some cool features. It has an LED level meter and a great tuner. It has a multi setting for Mono, Stereo and Expand and the cassette works pretty darn good. Another good feature is it uses D cell batteries just like my other boxes, so I can just swap in a few and I'm off! I have a new antenna I need to install, but I have to drill out the old one!

I betcha that $2 won''t buy 2 coffees in los angeles...great find Nod Yes

Yeah, $2.00 won't get ya much of anything anymore. Not even used stuff! But the "Name Your own Price" store is hookin' me up. I've been getting some good cassettes there too!

Yeah, Monkey Wards has been gone for a while. I'm not sure what year that box is. But it's a good travel box or working around the house box. I'm starting to get nervous taking my 920 out. Everytime I do someone wants to carry it and then I hear, BANG....OPPPS! So I think the days of letting people touch any of my boxes and the days of using it for day to day blasting are fading. I might just start using this little MW box. Hell the tape player works great!

What cleaning agents/tools did you use for cleaning that wards? I have cleaned up some boxes and actually stratched some of the surfaces during clean up, ruining a little of the appearance.

lasonic.trc920 - 2009-07-28 22:27

I used a spray bottle with deluded "Purple Cleaner" and also a spray bottle with some 409. I also used allot of cotton balls and Q-Tips and some 99% alcohol. I also used a tooth brush for scrubbing the grills because they have small grooves in a circular pattern. I could still do a little more on the grills, cassette buttons and the handle. All the controls had what looked like dry wall spackle on and in them, but that stuff comes off easy. So far all the bbox’s I have all run on D batteries, this one takes 6. I want to buy a set of 10 rechargeable to swap from box to box. I need to fix the antenna next. I think I have to drill out the old screw. I have a new antenna for it. It has an EXCELLENT tuner and stereo and stereo wide. Again, it’s just a little travel box, still a bit rough, but something I don’t have to worry about if I’m outside working in the yard or on the car.

In these pictures you can see the controls look good. One of the major problems is a broken case corner. Still not sure if I want to try a repair. I actually bought this box to try some new ideas and push what I know I can fix. I was thinking of using some car body filler and a repaint. If not, I’ll just jam it as is.

Here's a good before cleaning picture of the controls. They were dirty.

I put in RUN DMC's Raising Hell just for fun, but thats a bit too much for this little box!

not much bass but good volume over all.

I kind of figured Monkey Ward's was out of business. I haven't seen them around for a while.

My GOD, I remember my Mother shopping there when I was a kid, and I'm 49 now!!! Eek
