I just saw this in NM condition for $40. Is it worth that much?

well i won't say that $40 is much - even for the 9100.

it's a nice basic box , well worth $40 in my eyes (not more), but for me this box was nothing to keep.

I'd say go for it - experience the box for yourself and if it' not what you expected you can allways sell it for that price (or more on ebay) again
