anyone having luck in the wild?

andyboombox - 2009-08-17 02:15

hey all
how are everyone elses scores in the wild lately? apart from a purchase on ebay, and a purchase im sealing with Paul (pacwestuk) this week, for me everything else has totally dried up. went to whitley bridge car boot yesterday, and all i found was a small sharp qt-242e(bk) for a quid. its not that im ungrateful to the selling public or anything but all i seem to find at carboots are tiny little ones like my sharp (found a little white sharp 368 last week)
- id love to find a big one! just one! just to recapture that buzz again. you guys know the feeling dont you? its dissapoinmtment all round for me lately, as im suffering with depression. and the only things keeping me going are my little girl and my passion for blasters!
any more of you got any more new tales of your in the wild purchases out there to keep me and the rest of us going? Smile

djyetix - 2009-08-17 03:27

My last found on Saturday morning: a beautyful JVC RC 838 Smilein a near mint condition. I love this one very much cause of his giant VU needle meters.

But I have the same feeling: good blasters became rare in the wild.

im.out.of.hear - 2009-08-17 03:40

I got some boomers last week..a friend was having a clear out...

JVC 656
JVC PC25
Sharp GF5454
Sharp GF6464
Sharp W-QT360
Fisher PH422 aka Sanyo C3
Hitachi Trk 7800
Aiwa stereo 300
Realistic Scr 26
Ferguson 3T18
Triumph CP4005

None of them are big expensive Grail boxes, they`ve been stored for a very long time, but after a bit of a sort out, they should be kool..

ako - 2009-08-18 01:46

havent found anything for over a year...really dried up out here. i rarely even see mid-80's 3-piecers anymore, let alone the early 80's 1-piecers i love so much...

andyboombox - 2009-08-18 02:42

a-ko
I Agree its completely dried up for me, as i said in this post. i have all my local charity shops and second hand shops on high alert for me, still nothing. and all i uncover at car boot sales etc is nothing but small, generally poor condition stuff.
hope you, and everyone else in the same boat have some luck soon.
andy v.

billy.the.binman - 2009-08-18 06:45

boot fairs are the place to be ive found, most of mine have come from bootys.

you tend to find old folk sell their old kitchen radio and the like - which turns out to actually be a gf9090 or something like that.

most people see them as dirty old radios, its not till you spend your sunday afternoon with a screw driver and lots of soapy water that they come up as the bad ass mofo's!

billy.the.binman - 2009-08-18 06:59

got this one only last week, was about £3. they dont tend to come up often, i get only a hand full a year at boot fairs, you just have to plug away at it.

there was a time when a mate and i went crazy hunting down every secondhand store, pawn shop and tv radio shop in a 60mile radius to find them. in the end we both got a decent box from tels in bexhill. he had one big gf9494 stashed away in ok ish condition and a mint 8787 (i think) so after going all over the place we finally got somewhere.

if it was easy and fruitful where would the fun be?!

try going the extra mile for them, most people luck out when they do that, like old stig of the dump bendycat and the chaps that put flyers and ads out for old radios. luck will come!

i lucked out earlier this year on a gf767 which i have on atm, and my 2 crowns for only £100 simply as the guy sold them on ebay but didnt want to ship. i drove up there and got them, took the best part of a day but was worth it!

bendycat - 2009-08-18 14:19

well at the moment i seem to be getting them in without looking to hard Red Face at the bootfairs and at the dump

biggish ones was the two phillips D444's

gonna put up another thread of weekend finds

just need to find a couple of 777's and c-100's Wink

chiplayer - 2009-08-18 16:25

For me, the thrifts and flea markets has been very dry lately as well. These boxes are getting harder to find. Here are the last finds of the past three weeks:
Sanyo M7100
Nice mini with great sound and looks
but was missing the handle Frown

and a very mini only 3" high and 9" long
made by Sunny Japan; it only get radio:

andyboombox - 2009-08-19 06:05

hey all
bendy- i like that name for you- stig of the dump.
i think from now on, you should be renamed.
the stig.
and get yourself a white crash helmet with white overalls and blue visor.
or are you the stig for real?
andy v.
(to all you non british guys the stig is a driver on bbc2's Top Gear, and i love the show).

ghetto.blaster - 2009-08-19 17:57

NO NO LUCK AT ALLLLLLL...........

chiplayer - 2009-08-20 13:55

CoolJust when I thought things were dry out there, I pick up these two from the thrift yesterday and cleaned them today:

fuzzyduck - 2009-09-14 15:34

I gave up going to bootsales and the dump over a year ago, they've all dried up completely. Frown

manimal347 - 2009-09-14 20:48

I recently saw a silver-faced early 80's Yorx at my local Sallies. No clue of the model, but I wish I grabbed it, as one just went on Ebay for fifty bucks in working order. Alas, I'm moving and under orders not to bring more things home.

xyc0n - 2009-09-16 00:15

Something that I have to constantly tell myself is that if you go a long time and strike out, it means absolutely jack ****. The world is too dynamic to predict or assume you know what's up. The day after you give up and stop searching, your grail could pop up for next to nothing mere miles from your house.

The only reason you should quit is if you already have all the boxes you want. If your thirst for blasters is as yet unquenched, don't stop searching, don't give up, ever.

aa.fussy - 2009-09-16 04:05

Picked up this Sharp GF-3939 this week at a charity store for $15:

Didn't require any cleaning or repairing at all and sounds nice.

ricktv - 2009-09-20 22:20

Oh my CRAP did I get lucky this weekend. I went to an antique radio fair and discovered a JVC Biophonic boomer...realizing later on that it was the RC-838. A little rough but working. I say it's a winner.

Then the second day I met a familiar face I almost got the last time: a Sharp RD-688AV. I had to waffle on this one since there's no tuner, but I like the looks and the sound. Do have to get it some new belts though - the decks both wind OK but have trouble playing.

Pics following soon, but you'd kill me if I told you how much each one cost me. Eek

andyboombox - 2009-09-21 02:31

then dont tell us!!!!!!! Laugh Out Loud
andy

gusg - 2009-09-22 06:28

aa.fussy - 2009-09-24 15:28

I usually find CD boomboxes at fetes and carboot sales and mini and other boomboxes are often bought a charity shops.

gusg - 2009-09-25 05:46

Oh you lucky so and so, they are such lookers! Eek
Looking forward to the pics. Nod Yes Nod Yes

ricktv - 2009-10-05 18:21

Not forgotten about the pics...wanna do a family portrait BUT:

I cleaned up the controls on the JVC and now it's in for advanced surgery. I had the back off to clean it up (and out - there was SAND in it!) and miracle of miracles, one of the metal pieces of a bracket that holds the handle on from inside is lodged somewhere inside it.

That could not bode well for when I have to re-belt the Sharp.

chiplayer - 2009-10-15 21:36

Just got this Aiwa CA-100 from some old man on craigslist stating it was hardly used and fully functional. It's a sweet look Aiwa (my first) but the speakers are blown and the deck is shot (no motor sound). Frown

Still a nice piece to add to the collection!

teamstress - 2009-10-17 12:12

Not much luck either. Did get a Panasonic F-3 at a tag sale monday.

Ha! BendyStig

chiplayer - 2010-02-15 08:14

Just found this Panasonic RX C46 for under 10 USD at the thrift. It's got great sound for a smaller box, one of my favs for far! Sounds better than other bigger boxes of mine!

andyboombox - 2010-02-24 02:32

got an interesting, massive tv/radio/cassette combi portable yesterday from my charity shop, for 3 quid-made by benkson-never heard of these guys-has shades of ferguson/teleton about it,says made in taiwan on a little sticker,15w output power.but you cant read much into the taiwan sticker as ferguson units were made in taiwan,im sure they were, and ferguson were part of thorn emi,a london-based company.its a nice machine, big 5 inch telly, albeit not great sound quality.thats not always what its about for me though, which also reflects on me just aquiring today a ferguson radio star-am/fm radio only-no cassette.i love the look of the fergusons-pity they dont sound great!!!!!

brigadier.vytas - 2010-02-24 03:18

just found this pic:

andyboombox - 2010-02-24 03:21

just got a sony cf320 mono yesterday.needs a lot of attention-tuner window vertually out, radio switch woulnt stay on,old non earth power cord and grubby as hell, but amazingly, all works.sounds alright for a mono too.i believe the japan domestic equivalent is the cf1600.dating to 1976.
really starting to get into these monos now- have about 5 in total, with hopefully a marantz coming soon.now if only i could find a cf 495 like retro addicts.....

billy.the.binman - 2010-03-14 04:17

saw a vz2000 at a booty today and a vz3000.

the 3000 had no speakers, bootfair condition (ie out of a skip but would be ok with a clean) oh yeah it works he said. i dont believe this chap even has electricity in his abode, he certainly doesnt have an iron.

£20... pass.

the 2000 again, skip condition, couple sliders missing, bit of dirt. the lady selling it was a trader, she said the turntable didnt work, which was good of her, i expected the "yeah it works great" patter.

No power button which put me off most, plus the £40 asking price.

pass-asaurus-rex today

im.out.of.hear - 2010-03-14 05:43

yesterday i saw a jvc pc30,passed on it..also saw a little panasonic c45,i would gave had that but speakers were missing..i always see sub standard boxes every week but i always pass

Andy,if you have a pc or laptop at home, you could really do good by buying a Boombox Database from Jens,i think that Dvd has got nearly every make and model box ever made..many hours of browsing and drooling..

andyboombox - 2010-03-18 06:09

saxonman - 2010-03-19 00:05

andy it's a hitachi trk22

andyboombox - 2010-03-19 04:12

hey sax-not heard of that one-
well my day today is about to get a whole lot better-
taking delivery of
another panasonic 5600-to replace one i px'ed
hitachi trk 8155
sony cfs-88
panasonic 5500
the bad news is im parting with most of my remaining collection!only keeping the 8989-needing to thin most of my gear out due to lack of space-NOT lack of interest-my folks have won the battle for space-still at least i at last get some top line models to show for it.
let you know how i go on!

reli - 2010-03-19 10:12

The panny 5500 is a really high quality unit.

andyboombox - 2010-03-20 02:25

hey reli-youre not kidding-i just love my 5500-exactly meets the definition of boombox, in everyway-but on the subject of big panasonics-try the 5600-one word........WOW!
